How far is too far? The risks of a tumbling property market

Brace for impact. Wednesday will deliver the figures on the monthly change in home prices. For the two-thirds of Australians who are already owners, it will be unwelcome news.

And as much as various federal government ministers turn themselves inside out to avoid admitting it, this was the house price correction that Labor engineered.

In its May budget, Treasury forecast that the government’s tax changes to help young people get into the housing market would lower property price growth by a modest 2 per cent against a background of roughly 6 per cent annual increases since 2000.

But tax tools can be too blunt to allow governments to guide the glide to a gentle price landing.

The housing correction we had to have will still be painful

A slide in house prices will improve affordability, but there are risks to confidence, consumer spending and housing supply that cannot be ignored.

Former prime minister John Howard once said no one ever complained to him that the price of their house was going up.

Will anyone complain to Anthony Albanese that house prices are going down at a rate of knots?

Olympic swimmer Scott Miller reflects on marriage to Charlotte Dawson and addiction battle

Olympic swimming legend, Charlotte Dawson’s ex-husband, Cleo Bachelor of the Year, drug addict, escort agency owner, leader of a meth ring, prisoner… Scott Miller has had many labels in his lifetime, but two years after getting out of prison, he tells Woman’s Day he’s only interested in one title now – truth-teller.

“Obviously, sitting in there for years, you do a lot of reflecting,” Scott, 51, says of his three years behind bars.

“Now being sober and clean for a number of years, it’s easier to talk about. When you’re in it, controlled by addiction, you want to bury it and that’s what I did. But it’s about acknowledging what I did wrong and owning it. I’m a truth-teller these days. No more stories.”

Penelope Keith, best known for starring in sitcoms The Good Life and To the Manor Born, has died aged 86.

A statement on behalf of her family said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Dame Penelope Keith died peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey where she had lived for more than 50 years.

Dame Penelope Keith: The Good Life's funny and formidable star

Dame Penelope Keith was one of Britain's best-loved comedy actresses thanks to her inimitable portrayal of Margo Leadbeatter in 1970s sitcom The Good Life, among other roles.

As Margo, the formidable social-climbing snob with a cut-glass voice but a soft interior, Keith ensured her place in the nation's hearts.

And her transition to her next comedy hit To the Manor Born, playing true-blue aristocrat Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, felt seamless.

Keith starred in several other sitcoms before later fronting shows about her passion for the British countryside.

Over a career that began in the late 1950s, Keith also remained devoted to her theatre roots, performing up and down the UK.

Super switching sees billions flow out of traditional funds and at a risk

Australians looking to grow their retirement savings need to be aware of the risks. (Money, Coin, Investment,  nattanan23, Pixabay license)

For many Australians, superannuation doesn't occupy their routine thoughts until they hit their 40s.

By that time, people who have been working for most of their lives may have built up hundreds of thousands of dollars in super, and start to think more closely about whether the amount they have accumulated will help support a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.

For much of the past decade, retail funds have been the biggest winners in attracting billions of Australians' super.

But in recent years, there's been a shift of retirement savings out of the major players into self-managed super funds (SMSFs).

ASIC warns savers at risk as big wealth platforms leave $300b exposed

The corporate regulator says major wealth management platforms have overly permissive compliance regimes, leaving customers exposed to the same dodgy schemes and shonky practices that led to thousands losing their savings when the $1 billion Shield and First Guardian schemes failed.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission analysis – its first of the fast-growing sector since 2024 – bluntly concluded platform operators were “not doing enough to protect members” and, in some cases, found they had even regressed on crucial consumer safeguards over the past two years.

‘Deeply concerning’: ASIC warns on gaps in oversight of $300b in super

Businesses that oversee $300 billion in superannuation savings invested via wealth platforms are not doing enough to monitor for potentially excessive financial advice fees being deducted from members’ accounts, the corporate watchdog warns.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) will on Monday say it was “overwhelmingly disappointed” after it conducted a review into how well super trustees in the platforms segment are safeguarding members’ retirement savings.

Platforms, which have surged in popularity, allow members to have greater control over their super investments than traditional funds. They are technology systems that allow investors and financial advisers to manage money spread across multiple investment options.
