Bayern Munich, Konrad Laimer resolve financial differences

According to a report from Kicker, Bayern Munich and Austrian star Konrad Laimer have resolved their outstanding financial issues and should be clear to complete contract negotiations on a new contract:

Negotiations for a new contract had stalled for a long time, but now Konrad Laimer and FC Bayern have apparently made significant progress toward extending his current contract, which runs until 2027. The interim financial differences have been resolved, and according to kicker, a broad agreement has been reached. The 29-year-old defender has been under contract with FCB since the summer of 2023 and has made 136 appearances for the record champions.

Poker before the end: Green light for Laimer’s contract extension!

FC Bayern Munich is currently in talks with several players. Some contracts are set to be extended, including Konrad Laimer’s. There are now new developments in this regard.

In general, negotiations with the Austrian have been going on for a long time, and at one point it looked as though there might be significant differences because the player’s side was demanding substantial financial concessions.

Honorary President Uli Hoeneß also announced that under no circumstances would the club pay Laimer a very high salary, which caused quite a stir. But the waters calmed down fairly quickly, and Laimer’s side met FC Bayern halfway.

Awkward Hynes reality emerges after gritty Sharks victory

Nicho Hynes is one of the glamour boys of the NRL but the question has to be asked – are the Sharks a better team without him?

Hynes was missing in Saturday night’s gritty 10-8 win over the Warriors.

Nicho Hynes of the Sharks talks to referee Ashley Klein. Getty

And it proved to be the Sharks’ 11th win in their last 12 games without their classy halfback.

When Hynes is out, the under-rated Braydon Trindall gets free rein with the ball and so it was in wet and slippery conditions in Auckland as the Sharks carved out a gutsy win.

'I want to bring another World Cup home': Mulitalo's Kiwis goal

Cronulla flyer Ronaldo Mulitalo is eager to take another step towards regaining his place in the New Zealand squad as he eyes unfinished business at this year's World Cup.

The winger returned to Auckland for the Sharks clash with the Warriors eight months after he tore his ACL in the Kiwis’ Pacific Championships win over Samoa at Go Media Stadium.

Mulitalo made a rapid recovery from the serious injury and has hit the ground running for Cronulla since returning to the field during Magic Round.

The 26-year-old has relished the chance to return home and is using the trip as further motivation to represent his country later this year.

‘Lion of Mesopotamia’: How Aymen Hussein beat tragedy to reach World Cup

Iraq’s ‘most expensive footballer’, the striker who scored Iraq’s qualifying goal against Bolivia, retraces his journey about his difficult path to fame.

It has been a long, relentless journey to the World Cup for Iraq’s centre-forward Aymen Hussein, who propelled his country to the tournament for the first time in 40 years when he scored a winning goal against Bolivia in Mexico in the qualifiers.

When he was just 12 and already playing football for a local team, his father was brutally murdered while buying materials to build the family home.

A few years after that, his older brother was kidnapped, and he has not been heard from since.

He was held at a US airport for ‘seven hours’. He just scored Iraq’s first World Cup goal in 40 years!

Aymen Hussein scored Iraq’s first FIFA World Cup goal in 40 years in a landmark moment for the 2007 Asian champions.

Iraq are back on the global stage after four decades in the international wilderness thanks to Australian head coach Graham Arnold, who guided the Lion of Mesopotamia through an inter-confederation play-off.

Up against Erling Haaland and Norway in Group I on Wednesday (AEST), Iraq hero Hussein scored a memorable equaliser in Foxborough – just outside of Boston.

His perfect 39th-minute header marked Iraq’s first World Cup goal since their 2-1 loss to Belgium on June 8, 1986.

It was also the 34th goal of the 30-year-old’s international career and it came after he was questioned for seven hours by US immigration officials after touching down on American soil.

‘It was madness in Baghdad’: René Meulensteen on coaching Iraq and helping Ronaldo

Iraq’s No 2 discusses his recipe for a World Cup shock, the players’ singing and his time assisting Alex Ferguson at Manchester United

Iraq’s journey to their first World Cup finals tournament in 40 years involved sacrifices unmatched by any other side. After 20 qualifiers, the team faced a decisive playoff in the Mexican city of Monterrey but, with Iraq dragged into the Middle East war and airspace closed, several staff and players had an arduous job getting there.

“They had to travel from different cities to Baghdad by car or bus,” says René Meulensteen, the assistant to Iraq’s head coach, Graham Arnold. “Some of those journeys took up to eight hours. Then, from Baghdad they travelled roughly 15 hours on bumpy roads to Amman, in Jordan, where occasional flights were still operating. The other Asian‑based players made their own way to Amman, so they could all travel together.”

Liverpool-raised Iraqi refugee Ali Al-Hamadi ready for World Cup

A footballer whose family fled Iraq when he was a baby has said representing the nation of his birth at the World Cup was a "cool story" and poignant for his parents.

Ali Al Hamadi, now 24, was a baby when his mother and father escaped Saddam Hussein's regime in the early 2000s and came to Liverpool.

The striker signed for Ipswich Town two years ago and spent last season on loan at Luton Town in League One.

Iraq will meet Norway in their opening Group I game later. The match kicks off at 23:00 BST in Boston.

He said it was a proud moment for his whole family.

He escaped the war in a truck and today he is Iraq’s hero at the World Cup: This is the life of Ali Al-Hamadi

Striker Ali Al-Hamadi has endured a tough season in English soccer – but the Iraqi has made history with his national team.

Luton Town’s Ali Al-Hamadi has endured a “difficult”, injury-hit season, managing just one league goal as the Hatters missed out on promotion from the third tier of English soccer. However, the history-making 24-year-old still has a potential World Cup debut to look forward to, with the striker now in line to spearhead Iraq’s return to the global tournament this summer.

Capped 17 times since his debut in 2021, Al-Hamadi has scored five goals for Iraq – the most important of which came in March, when he helped fire the Lions of Mesopotamia to only their second World Cup. In a qualifying playoff against Bolivia, his 10th-minute strike opened the scoring for Graham Arnold’s men, as the Iraqis won 2-1 to reach the finals for the first time since 1986.

Ipswich news: Being part of Iraq's World Cup squad 'a joy' – Al-Hamadi

Ipswich striker Ali Al-Hamadi says he and the rest of the Iraq squad want to give people "something to remember" as they prepare to open their World Cup campaign on Tuesday night against Norway.

Al-Hamadi, now 24, was a baby when his mother and father escaped Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime in the early 2000s and moved to Liverpool.

He represented Liverpool schoolboys before joining Tranmere Rovers and eventually signing for Ipswich two years ago, spending last season on loan at Luton Town in League One.

"We know it's tournament football and we know upsets have happened before," Al-Hamadi told BBC Radio Suffolk.

Female talent takes the brunt of Seven’s on-air job cuts

Nine women and just one man are among the redundancies of on-air talent in Seven’s Sydney and Melbourne newsrooms that have been publicly identified in the company’s latest round of job cuts.

Southern Cross Media, which owns the television network, announced between 250 and 300 job cuts last week, noting that market conditions had deteriorated more quickly than anticipated.

Although the cuts are being felt across the business among on-air talent who have been spared in part from past redundancy rounds, it is largely women who have publicly identified themselves as departing in that section of the business.

Across the Sydney and Melbourne newsrooms, nine have been made redundant. Just one male reporter, veteran journalist Chris Maher, has been forced out.

Hit100.9 Hobart breakfast show Dan and Christie axed by SCA

Hobart’s top-rated breakfast radio show has been axed with barely a day’s notice as part of sweeping cost cuts by Southern Cross Austereo.

Hit100.9 duo Dan and Christie were told by network executives on Tuesday that their show would not continue after Wednesday.

Dan and Christie claimed the number one breakfast spot in Hobart during last year’s survey, surging 2.7 points to a 21.2% audience share and knocking Sarah, Mick and Johnno from 7HOFM off the top position.

The pair were in the middle of another survey period when the decision came down yesterday.

The show features born-and-bred Tasmanian Dan Taylor and former Home and Away actress Christie Hayes.

World Cup live updates: Shock over Iran player’s ‘political’ celebration

A rift between South Korea players and the country’s media has overshadowed the side’s preparations for Thursday’s World Cup match against Mexico, following disparaging comments about captain Son Heung-min.

The South Korean football association said it regretted “the inappropriate remarks made by some media personnel during the national football team’s training at the Guadalajara base camp”.

The organisation added the comments caused “great shock and disappointment” within the squad.

The incident occurred during an open training session on June 7, days before South Korea beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in its first World Cup match.

The 33-year-old Son, running with teammates, was mocked by unidentified media personnel over his military record in footage recorded by broadcaster JTBC, South Korea’s official rights holder for the tournament.

In case you haven't yet realised, Italy are not taking part in the 2026

Two Kiwi men based in America have found themselves caught in between a geo-political and cultural sporting flashpoint in Los Angeles this afternoon.Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, a New Zealand musical duo currently based in New York, had no idea their innocent trip to the West Coast to watch their home nation's football team would end with them caught in a shouting match between pro-monarchist Persian-Americans and a the travelling Iranian football fans. The Kiwi men, who have also admitted to never previously watching their rugby-obsessed nation play the alien sport of soccer, didn't think they would find themselves in the centre of the politically charged match. "We thought maybe they were just supporting different soccer teams" said Bret."But then we remembered they were playing us so that couldn't have been it""And they weren't yelling about New Zealand" added Jemaine."No, one of them was from Iran and one was from America" Bret corrected."Yeah but they were both speaking the same language" Jemaine rebutted"Yeah good point"The pair spent have much of the last few hours trying to determine which side of the argument they were accidentally standing with before concluding they were probably standing with neither, although they couldn't be completely sure."Someone asked if I supported the Shah" Bret explained."What did you say?" asked Jemaine."I said I support New Zealand.""What did he say?""He looked disappointed."Jermaine admitted he briefly considered pretending to be Australian to avoid further questions before remembering that would probably create a completely different argument.
