Indian police allege missing Melbourne high school maths teacher Sunil Sharma was murdered by his brother and dumped in a canal.

The Australian citizen had gone back to his country of birth to attend to property matters but went missing last month.

His grieving daughter Surbhi Sharma has paid tribute to her father, saying she counts herself lucky to have had a loving father like him.

Melbourne maths teacher Sunil Sharma, who went missing in India last month, was allegedly murdered by his brother and dumped in a canal.

Sunil Sharma, 66, was preparing for retirement and had been in the city of Amritsar in Punjab province in the country's north-west, readying an investment property for sale when he disappeared on May 22.

Officers in Amritsar, in India’s north-west, have charged the man’s brother with murder, as they continue to scour the canal to find his body.

Documents seen by this masthead suggest the brother has confessed to the murder, which possibly came after the brother allegedly tried to steal the dead man’s property.

Sunil Sharma was first reported missing on May 22 after travelling to India from Melbourne to sell two investment properties.

Fugitive James Dalamangas Wanted for 1999 Sydney Murder Arrested in Greece

Greek authorities have arrested a 55-year-old Greek-Australian fugitive wanted for a 1999 murder in Sydney, ending a 27-year international manhunt. James Dalamangas, 55, was taken into custody by Greek police in Aigio on Saturday after living under an assumed identity for years in the region of Aigialeia. Australian authorities had listed him among the country's most wanted fugitives and had offered a reward of AUD$200,000 for information leading to his capture.

According to Greek media reports, Dalamagas fled Australia shortly after the fatal stabbing of George Giannopoulos at a nightclub in Sydney's Belmore district in 1999.

After arriving in Greece, he allegedly adopted the name "Antonis Tzimas" and settled in the village of Alsos in Aigialeia. Locals reportedly knew him as a farmer who cultivated agricultural land and lived quietly with his partner for nearly two decades.

MANILA, Philippines–Alex Eala’s run continued in the Birmingham Open just past midnight on Sunday (Manila time).

This time, though, it took her a while to get the win.

After easing her way into the semifinal, Eala survived her first real test in the WTA 125 tournament, overcoming Swiss Rebeka Masarova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to reach her first final of the season.

Eala came into her match against Masarova having won her first three matches in sweeping fashion.

Then on the 66th lap, with Leclerc in third, he found himself in the same predicament in the same spot.

That led to another safety car and a red flag, which stopped the race.

Pioneering Australian doctor Richard Scolyer dies after brain cancer battle

Pioneering Australian doctor Richard Scolyer has died, three years after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour.

Scolyer, 59, made global headlines for his decision to undergo a risky world-first experimental treatment for his glioblastoma at the hands of his friend Professor Georgina Long – based on the pair's own scientific breakthroughs in skin cancer.

Their work on advanced melanoma – once a death sentence – has saved countless lives, and their encouraging findings in treating Scolyer's brain tumour have triggered an early stage clinical trial in the US.

"I wanted to keep contributing, even in my darkest hour," Scolyer said in an open letter announcing his passing.

Former Australian of the Year Professor Richard Scolyer has died aged 59 after fighting the "worst of the worst brain cancers".

Scolyer fought the aggressive brain cancer for almost three years, defying the terrible survival odds.

"I'm just amazed, to be honest, that I'm still here," he told Australian Story in January 2026. "The average survival is in the order of 12 months for the type of cancer that I've got. But to still be here more than two and a half years later, that's incredible."

My fellow Australians, I pen this letter as a final goodbye to all those I have had the immense privilege of loving, sharing life’s adventures with, working alongside and meeting during what can only be described as a life filled with happiness, optimism, opportunity and passion.

My intention is for this letter to be published upon my passing – as my final farewell. I’ve spent the last three years being open and honest about my journey with glioblastoma (brain cancer), in part to be transparent about what cancer patients and their families go through, and in part to provide hope and inspiration that we can and should continue to push boundaries to propel the cancer field forward.

Oscar Piastri regretfully admitted that McLaren would have ended up seventh in Qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix “no matter what” they changed, in what was a frustrating session ahead of their 1000th Grand Prix.

Both Piastri and his team mate Lando Norris grew used to appearing outside of the top five during Free Practice in Monaco, but there was some hope that they would find performance ahead of the all-important Qualifying hour.

Mercedes made it six poles from six in 2026, though this is the one that really matters. Kimi Antonelli starts from P1 at the race where track position is more important than anywhere else. But then, Antonelli’s starts haven’t been confidence-inducing so far this season, and alongside him is Max Verstappen, who is highly motivated to get in front.

And what of the cars behind? Ferrari locked-out the second row but may have hoped for more, Isack Hadjar was a splendid fifth; George Russell a despairing sixth and McLaren have a lacklustre fourth row. Unless the Monaco Grand Prix gets distinctly non-linear (always a possibility) they’re not fighting for a win, but the strategists will heavily-influence the order in which they finish…

However, Antonelli had to weather nervelessly the tense final moments of a safety-car restart and then a full standing start after a red flag because the track itself was breaking up at the final corner.

It presented a dramatic final showdown, with the fast-starting Ferrari of Hamilton on the front row next to Antonelli, and while the Italian was a little slow away, a moment surely when his heart was in his mouth, he held his line, nerve and the place, enough to maintain a deserved lead to the flag.
