It’s exciting times at the Australian National University, where we work. While there has been plenty of attention on government interventions and resignations at the ANU, less remarked upon is how our university is approaching something resembling democratic leadership.

For those out of the loop (good for you!), our former chancellor, Julie Bishop, resigned from her role on May 8, 2026. Many people understand university chancellorships as ceremonial positions. At the ANU, this is not how it works in practice.

But while the no-hitter was lost, the Dodgers swept the Rockies with a 4-1 win at Dodger Stadium. They'll take that end result every time.

Dodgers Officially Release 3 Pitchers From Organization

The Los Angeles Dodgers released three pitchers this week, per the team's transaction log on MiLB.com

Right-handed pitchers Joel Ibarra, Domingo Geronimo and Edgar Leon were all released from the organization.

Ibarra was officially released from the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, Geronimo was released from the Single-A Ontario Tower Buzzers and Leon was cut from the Arizona Complex League Dodgers.

Ibarra initially signed with the Dodgers in December 2018 as an international free agent out of Mexico.

He debuted with the organization in the Dominican Summer League in 2021, and came stateside in 2022.

Ibarra struggled to rise the organizational ranks, only making it as far as High-A in 2025.

An unrepentant inmate has been denied parole after he was convicted of assaulting Lauren Huxley, dousing her in petrol and leaving her for dead.

Ms Huxley was 18 in November 2005 when 39-year-old Robert Black Farmer entered her home in Northmead, in western Sydney.

He bound and beat her, then doused her in petrol, leaving her in a pool of blood and petrol as he set the property alight.

Indigenous community members have described their shock and anger after an Aboriginal rock shelter was âdamaged beyond recoveryâ by contractors building transmission lines for a New South Wales renewable energy zone.

The heritage site was destroyed by bulldozers in March during the construction of access tracks for the Central-West Orana renewable energy zone, a transmission line project located about 300km north-west of Sydney.

The network company Acerez, engaged by the state government to design, build and operate the infrastructure project, discovered the damage in May while undertaking due diligence checks.

'No excuse' for renewable company destroying Wiradjuri rock shelter

Members of the Wiradjuri community say it is "inexcusable" that renewable energy company ACEREZ destroyed an "Aboriginal rock shelter" near Mudgee despite knowing about it.

They are calling for compensation and for the company to be held to account.

The Commonwealth Department of Environment is assessing two applications made by a Wiradjuri traditional owner to protect the area, while two investigations into the shelter's destruction continue.

Members of the Wiradjuri community say a renewable energy company must be held to account for the "inexcusable" destruction of an Aboriginal rock shelter it promised to protect.

Five of seven people trapped in a flooded cave for a week in Laos have been found alive, according to a rescue organisations.

The seven people entered the cave in Laos's central Xaisomboun province more than a week ago but got trapped by a landslide triggered by heavy rain.

Rescuers are beginning the complex operation to free the local men while still looking for two others still missing inside the cave.

Specialist divers are working to rescue five men from a flooded cave in Laos after they were found alive and "in good spirits" huddled in a tight passage of the cave.

Xaisomboun Province, Laos: Rescue divers have found five villagers trapped for more than a week in a flooded Laos cave alive and in decent health, with efforts continuing overnight Wednesday to locate the remaining two.

The men had been missing since at least May 20 after going into the cave complex in the mountainous central province of Xaisomboun to fossick for gold. Families of the men told this masthead it had begun to rain early that day, and the group had been warned not to go “but they didn’t listen”.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, news reached the desperate relatives and villagers gathered at the staging ground at Phanchai Village that five of the men had been found.

Three Alto residents charged with stealing cargo from derailed train in Hall County

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Three Alto residents were arrested after Hall County deputies caught them allegedly stealing items from shipping containers left beside railroad tracks following last week’s train derailment in East Hall, authorities said.

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 7 p.m. Sunday, May 24, after a 911 caller reported suspicious activity near shipping containers along the railroad tracks near Old Cornelia Highway and Yonah-Homer Road.

When deputies arrived, they found four shipping containers with doors that had either been pried open or had locks cut off, Hall County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer BJ Williams said in a statement.

Loose umbrella fatally strikes woman at Lake Marion restaurant, coroner says

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) – A Huger woman died after being hit by an umbrella during storms that hit the Midlands Saturday night.

According to Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell, a 56-year-old woman from Huger died while eating at the Driftwood Grill, a Lake Marion restaurant, Saturday night after an umbrella got loose and hit her.

Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley said the umbrella hit her in the neck, severing her carotid artery. Blackwell confirmed she died at the scene.

Officials attribute the umbrella coming loose to high winds during the Saturday night storms.

According to the coroner’s office, an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

US woman killed by umbrella blown by wind at South Carolina restaurant

A 56-year-old woman died after being struck in the neck by a table umbrella dislodged by wind at a South Carolina restaurant.

The woman was dining on the patio of Driftwood Grill in Summerton on 23 May with her husband when a strong and sudden wind blew the umbrella from the table, hitting her head and neck, according to the Clarendon County Coroner's Office.

First responders found the woman – identified as Dana Winger of Huger -unresponsive with a cut and were not able to revive her.

"Our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night's sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion," the Driftwood Grill said in a post on Facebook.

A South Carolina woman dining at a restaurant with her husband was killed Friday night after she was struck in the head and neck by a flying patio umbrella.

Authorities were called to the Driftwood Grill in Summerton, South Carolina, at around 7:40 p.m. and found the woman, identified as Dana Winger, unresponsive with a laceration wound, the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office said in a statement.

Winger and her husband were eating at the restaurant when a gust of wind blew the umbrella from a table and hit her in the head and neck area, the coroner’s office said.
