    Amazon earnings beat expectations with strong cloud growth

    Amazon on Wednesday posted better-than-expected earnings and revenue for the first quarter, and reported cloud sales that topped analysts' expectations.

    The stock was up more than 4%, after bouncing around in extended trading.

    Here's how the company did, compared with estimates from analysts polled by LSEG:

    Revenue in Amazon's cloud segment increased 28% year over year to $37.59 billion, marking its fastest growth in more than three years. Wall Street had expected AWS sales to grow 26%.

    Amazon and other big tech companies have been trying to justify their hefty artificial intelligence spending, which could approach $700 billion in 2026. Amazon in February projected its capital expenditures will reach $200 billion in 2026, a sharp increase from last year.

    Amazon Q1 earnings put the spotlight on AI spending and revenue

    Amazon (AMZN) reported first quarter revenue and earnings per share that topped Wall Street estimates, with AWS posting its fastest growth in 15 quarters as the e-commerce giant continues its massive artificial intelligence build-out.

    Amazon stock was down 0.8% in extended trading after initially rising following the report, then falling as much as 7% before recovering most of those losses.

    The company reported earnings per share of $2.78, up from $1.59 a year ago. Revenue was $181.5 billion, up from $155.7 billion in the same quarter last year.

    Analysts had expected earnings per share of $1.62 on revenue of $177.2 billion, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates.

    Amazon’s all-important AWS cloud business generated $37.6 billion in revenue, ahead of estimates for $36.7 billion. AWS revenue excluding foreign exchange grew 28%, above expectations for 25.7% growth.

    Live: Hegseth says Iran war is 'not a quagmire' as cost of conflict revealed

    US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth defended the war against Iran in his first testimony to Congress since February, instead attacking Democrats as "feckless". 

    Mr Hegseth's comments come as estimates emerge that the war has cost America almost $US25 billion ($35 billion) so far, with the Pentagon requesting a new budget of $US1.45 trillion, up 40 per cent from last year.

    Pete Hegseth denied that the US-Israel war on Iran, which the Pentagon estimates has cost the US at least $25bn, is “a quagmire” and claimed critics of the operation posed a greater threat to the US than Iran itself.

    Hegseth came under pressure to set out Washington’s strategy for the conflict as he appeared before the House armed services committee on Wednesday for a marathon hearing alongside Gen Dan Caine, chair of the joint chiefs of staff. The US defense secretary asked lawmakers to approve $1.5tn military spending – and then described some of those lawmakers as “the biggest challenge” to the war effort.

    Hegseth clashes with lawmakers over Iran war in nearly six-hour-long hearing

    US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth sparred with Democratic lawmakers during a nearly six-hour-long hearing, in his first time facing questions under oath since the start of the Iran war.

    Hegseth appeared before the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Dan Caine and the defence department's chief financial officer Jules Hurst.

    In his opening remarks, Hegseth said the "biggest adversary we face" is the "defeatist words" of Democrats and some Republicans.

    Democratic lawmakers on the committee criticised how federal money is being used in the conflict. Hurst revealed in the hearing that the war had cost the US $25bn (£18.5bn) so far.

    Alphabet topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue on ‌Wednesday, as enterprise spending on artificial intelligence delivered the best quarter of growth for its cloud unit since the start of the AI boom.

    The Google ‌parent company's total revenue rose 22 per cent to $109.9 billion in the first quarter, above an estimate of $107.2 billion, according to LSEG data.

    Shares of the company were up more than seven per cent in extended trading.

    Google-parent Alphabet soars as Meta stumbles over AI costs

    Google-parent Alphabet impressed Wall Street with its latest quarterly earnings on Wednesday, as big tech rival Meta left investors lukewarm amid concerns about the huge cost of AI development.

    The earnings — along with reports from Microsoft and Amazon — came as AI titans pump billions of dollars into cloud computing and artificial intelligence, vying to lead in technology that they insist will transform all aspects of life.

    Shares in Alphabet rose by more than six percent in after-hours trading as investors lauded the company's success in making the pivot to AI and solid revenue across its major divisions.

    The tech giant reported a profit of $62.6 billion on revenue just shy of $110 billion, easily eclipsing the same period a year earlier and beating market expectations.

    Greyhound track approved last week may never host races

    Orange's former horse trotting track has been given approval to be redeveloped into a greyhound racing facility. (ABC Central West: Xanthe Gregory)

    A $15 million plan to turn Orange's disused trotting track into a greyhound course was approved by a planning panel last week, despite community and council opposition.  

    Greyhound Racing NSW says it may not register the new track, citing falling breeding rates, commercial viability and sustainability concerns. 

    Greyhound Racing New South Wales has warned that a newly approved track in the state's Central West is unlikely to receive registration due to challenges facing the sport.

    The $15 million "Centre of Excellence" in Orange was approved by the state government's Western Regional Planning Panel (WRPP) on April 21.

    A fresh threat has emerged that could derail the possibility of greyhound racing happening in Orange.

    On April 21, the Western Region Planning Panel unanimously granted development approval for a greyhound racing track to be built at 32 Perc Griffith Way.

    It was this decision which led many to believe that greyhounds would soon be racing in Orange once more.

    But less than a week after that monumental decision, the CEO of Greyhound Racing NSW put out a message which could signal the project's demise.

    Police are investigating a drive-by shooting at a South Melbourne brothel in the early hours of Thursday.

    Shots were fired from a moving vehicle into a roller door and an unoccupied parked car.

    Melbourne punk quartet wins for Jerkin’, while Guy Sebastian wins most performed Australian work and most performed pop work

    Amyl and the Sniffers have won the top prize at the Australian Performing Rights Association (Apra) awards for the second year running, taking home song of the year for their track Jerkin’.

    Song of the year – the only peer-voted category at the Apras, where most awards are determined by airplay and royalties – was just one of Amyl and the Sniffers’ three prizes on Wednesday night.

    The Melbourne punk quartet also won most performed rock work for Jerkin’, as well as songwriter of the year.

    Punk rockers Amyl and The Sniffers have bagged three top gongs at the Australian music industry’s APRA awards.

    Jerkin’, the opening track from the band’s third studio album, Cartoon Darkness, has won the prestigious peer-voted Song of the Year award, as well as Most Performed Rock Work.

    The four-piece outfit fronted by high-energy singer Amy Taylor also took home the Songwriter of the Year award for the second year running.

    “Last time I checked, I’ve got success,” sings Taylor in Jerkin’.

    Too right – but it’s one of the very few lines from the high-energy diss track that could be quoted in mainstream media, because the rest are full of swear words.
