Lincoln trust in double act as second-tier return starts at Middlesbrough

Lincoln’s joint head coaches, Tom Shaw and Chris Cohen, hope Championship rivals underestimate ‘amazing squad’

The last thing the Championship needs is another spying scandal, so when a lorry emblazoned with KGB parked up alongside Lincoln City’s training ground on Tuesday lunchtime there was laughter as staff pondered whether the Soviet Union was examining their set pieces. It shows the relaxed atmosphere at one of the second tier’s newest clubs, one that has had a summer of change yet maintained continuity by appointing joint head coaches.

Tom Shaw and Chris Cohen have replaced Michael Skubala, who led the Imps to 103 points and promotion back to this level after 65 years away before leaving for Bristol City. It was a symbiotic appointment because while the former assistants were devising a sales pitch to the club’s hierarchy, the wheels were already in motion to promote from within. Their plan is to banish English football’s memories of Liverpool’s ill-fated pairing of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier. The duo are doing final preparations for Saturday’s season opener at the Riverside against Middlesbrough, who have spent more than £20m on summer signings – Lincoln have spent a quarter of that across their 142-year history, indicating the task ahead.

Tottenham: Cristian Romero says 'I wasn't perfect' as Atletico Madrid move confirmed

Cristian Romero (right) attended Tottenham's final game of last season after a backlash from fans and former players

Cristian Romero says he "wasn't perfect" during his five years with Tottenham Hotspur, with his move to Atletico Madrid confirmed.

The La Liga side have paid £34.2m for the 28-year-old Argentina centre-back, who has joined on a five-year deal.

Romero's last game for Tottenham was against Sunderland in April, when he left the field in tears with a knee injury that would rule him out of Spurs' last six Premier League games of the season.

The team were in a relegation battle and Romero upset fans by planning to be in Argentina for their final game, to watch his first club Belgrano play in the Primera Division Apertura final.

Reds Fight Back to Earn Draw Against Manchester United

Adelaide United produced a spirited second-half comeback to draw 2-2 with Manchester United in their final group-stage match of the Otten Innovation Cup.

The Reds faced another stern test against one of the world’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United controlling much of the opening half and taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Camacho Sidos and Mpofu.

Adelaide responded strongly after the break, lifting the intensity and pushing forward in search of a way back into the contest.

The pressure paid off when Amlani Tatu pulled a goal back to make it 2-1, before the Reds continued to threaten the Manchester United defence.

Carrick rules out £100m signing for Manchester United as Rashford rejoins squad

Michael Carrick has stated that Manchester United will not make a £100m signing this summer due to their finances, with the manager also insisting that Marcus Rashford “is our player” despite the forward and club preferring him to depart.

In the current window United have invested a total of £85m on Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos but have never spent £100m on a single transfer.

This is in contrast to Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea, the rest of the traditional big six, who have all spent £100m-plus on a player in recent years.

Carrick was asked how United can compete. “Money’s money. I get that,” said the manager. “It’s still about football and that’s where the competition lies. What we feel naturally as a group is to try and win games. So there’s a lot that goes into that, but certainly the situation is what it is as well, whether that’s finances or whatever.”

La Liga club Málaga has claimed victory in a friendly against English Premier League side Fulham after the London club walked off the field instead of participating in a penalty shootout.

The match in Spain finished 2-2 and, while Málaga believed a shootout should decide the winner, Fulham claimed both teams agreed pre-match that no shootout would occur.

Malaga striker Jauregi then kicked a penalty into an open net before celebrating in front of the home fans.

Borussia Dortmund vs AS Roma: Preview, Prediction and Probable Lineups

Just a week on from clinching the 2026 Emirates Cup against Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund face another top-tier European opponent tomorrow in AS Roma.

In what's their last preseason friendly of the summer, the BVB are set to host the Giallorossi at the Signal Iduna Park as the match is billed as the season opener.

Niko Kovac's side take on Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup next week while the Rome outfit open their new Serie A season against Fiorentina on 24 August.

While they haven't met in an official game since 1992-93 season, Dortmund and Roma lock horns in a friendly for the first time in 19 years.

Wesley ruled out for Borussia Dortmund friendly due to ankle injury

Roma is approaching the last appointment of its summer pre-season. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team will be engaged tomorrow, Saturday 15 August at 17:30 at Signal Iduna Park against Borussia Dortmund, in the last test before the official start of the season. At the end of the match, in fact, there will be only nine days left until the league debut against Fiorentina, scheduled for Monday, August 24 at 20:45 at the Olimpico.

The Giallorossi will leave in the afternoon for Germany to face a high-level opponent, useful to measure the condition of the team in this final phase of the preparation after the retreat in Wales. Among the most significant absences is that of Wesley, kept out of the squad together with Pellegrini and Pisilli. The Brazilian outsider will remain in Trigoria due to a slight ankle sprain, a nuisance that does not cause particular concern but that the Giallorossi staff wants to manage in the best possible way.

Cook Islanders hit the ballot box to choose their leaders – ABC Pacific

It's election day in the Cook Islands, with 7,000 voters expected to participate in polling.

Political commentator Thomas Tarurongo Wynne says the results will be known by 6 pm local time.

A big question is whether Prime Minister Mark Brown and his Cook Islands Party will return for another four years.

Mr Wynne, says the answer to that question is uncertain at the moment, but what is clear is that, like previous years, the next government is likely to be a coalition of parties.

Cook Islands election: PM Mark Brown speaks on the diplomatic crises that defined his year

The prime minister tells the Guardian that last year’s diplomatic rift with ally New Zealand could be on voters’ minds as they head to the polls

As voters in the Cook Islands prepare to head to the polls in a high-stakes general election, they will have much to reflect on. Over recent years, politics in this small island nation has been defined by fierce debates about deep-sea mining, diplomatic rifts with ally New Zealand and a major reshaping of the country’s foreign partnerships.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, days before Wednesday’s poll, Cook Islands prime minister Mark Brown defended his four-year term and the decisions he made that have seen this South Pacific nation of 17,000 people pushed into the international limelight, turning it into a battleground for influence between Beijing and western powers.

‘We realise that’: Bennett admits to nagging Rabbitohs issue

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has admitted his side is facing a goalkicking issue after Jayden Sullivan kicked one from four against the Bulldogs.

Sullivan is South Sydney’s third-choice kicker with Matt Dufty even having a crack, and missing, on Friday night.

The Rabbitohs halfback had to take the role because Latrell Mitchell, Jamie Humphreys and Ashton Ward are all out injured. Ward injured his hamstring goalkicking last week.

Post-match, Bennett was happy to expand on whether the goalkicking was a problem.

“We’ve got three of them with injuries but can’t do much about it. We’ve just got to keep scoring tries and make sure we defend well. Humphreys should be back in a week or two, he can certainly kick goals.”

    Rabbitohs suffer double injury blow

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will nervously wait when Adam Elliott is sent for scans for a groin injury sustained in the club's 22-6 win over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Friday.

Elliott has a long history with groin complaints, most notably requiring surgery in 2023 for a groin issue while he was at the Newcastle Knights.

The 31-year-old forward has also battled an osteitis pubis issue in 2022, with inflammation occurring in the middle of the pelvis, which cut his season short after dealing with the problem for a number of weeks prior.

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett confirmed it was a groin issue for Elliott in his post-match press conference.

Injury carnage hits Warriors-Broncos clash with Walsh and Metcalf ruled out

Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad will have a case to answer with the match review committee after he was sin binned for a hip drop on Brisbane’s Reece Walsh.

In the 17th minute, Nicoll-Klokstad was given his marching orders after he landed on the leg of Walsh.

Walsh had stayed down in agony before the Bunker reviewed the tackle which led to the Warriors star’s departure.

Walsh started to hobble off before he rejoined play, effectively on one leg, as the Broncos went on the attack.

The fullback tried to throw a cut-out pass to the wing which was then intercepted by Alofiana Khan-Pereira who ran the field to score and make it 16-0.

‘Absolutely cruel’: Warriors star’s season in doubt after devastating injury blow

Luke Metcalf’s remarkable return to first-grade could be over after the New Zealand Warriors halfback suffered another hamstring injury in a devastating blow against the Broncos.

Metcalf immediately grabbed at his right hamstring and knew something was wrong after attempting a goal-kick conversion.
