Trump threatens ‘more powerful and obnoxious’ tariffs, amid confusion in UK and EU; Wall Street drops – business live

Donald Trump has declared that he can use tariffs in a ‘much more powerful and obnoxious way’ than he has thus far.

Posting on his Truth Social network, the US president again attacked the supreme court for ruling against his sweeping global tariffs last Friday – calling them ‘incompetent’.

He also claims the justices have ‘‘accidentally and unwittingly’ expanded his presidential powers on tariffs.

double quotation markThe supreme court (will be using lower case letters for a while based on a complete lack of respect!*) of the United States accidentally and unwittingly gave me, as President of the United States, far more powers and strength than I had prior to their ridiculous, dumb, and very internationally divisive ruling.

Donald Trump lost his superpower last week, with the US Supreme Court applying the kryptonite.

Since regaining the presidency last year, Trump has wielded the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) as a multipurpose weapon, using it and the tariffs he imposed to not just force countries into extremely one-sided trade deals, but as geopolitical leverage.

Whether it was to coerce countries – including, indeed particularly, former close US allies – into massive trade and investment concessions under the threat of punitive tariff rates, or punishing Brazil for imprisoning his friend and ideological ally, Jair Bolsonaro, threatening Switzerland because he didn’t like the tone of a conversation with its president or European countries for not simply handing over Greenland, Trump weaponised IEEPA.

The Tesla Model Y has been crowned the 21st winner of the Drive Car of the Year award, with judges praising its practical packaging, exceptional value and game-changing technology.

The win marks the first overall win for Tesla, the first Chinese-built winner and the second time a fully electric vehicle has been awarded the gong.

The Model Y took out the best electric vehicle under $60,000 category and beat other category winners such as the BMW 5-Series, BYD Atto 2 and Dolphin Essential, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Tasman, Volvo XC90 and Zeekr 7X to win overall honours.

Drive Car of the Year 2026 – all the winners

With 16 awards spanning all corners of the new car market, here are all the 2026 Drive Car of the Year category winners in one place

We are often asked why, for Drive Car of the Year, we judge and assess cars in some market segments and not others. The fact is, we’re always looking at the cars you are buying to work out where we need to focus attention, and for the 2026 field, the categories cover some 86.7 per cent of all new cars sold in 2025.

That’s over 1 million new car transactions (1,076,553 to be exact) out of 1.24 million new car sales that we consider with our award criteria.

ABC pulls Australian Story episode, "Nabbed."

ABC has made a last minute change to Australian Story this evening, pulling an episode “Nabbed,” due to an “editorial issue.”

An ABC spokesperson told TV Tonight, “There was an editorial issue. No further info at this time sorry.”

The episode profiles pensioner Ian Williams, a self-confessed “stubborn bugger” who sued NAB over online scamming.

ABC has also deleted synopsis info from a number of websites and social media.

When Victorian pensioner Ian Williams lost $1338 in a banking scam, he expected a quick refund and apology. But his bank, a subsidiary of the National Australia Bank, blamed him for the transactions, despite Ian’s dogged detective work producing clear evidence to the contrary.

Detail in Channel 9's MAFS promo exposes 'concerning' trend: 'Dehumanising'

A new Married At First Sight groom has revealed a growing trend in Australia that's raising concerns. The Channel 9 show will welcome three new couples to the experiment on Monday's episode and the groom in question is Tyson Gordon.

In a preview aired on Sunday night, Tyson said he's looking for a wife who is "submissive", along with someone who isn't "woke" or "overweight". Dr Eloise Faichney told Yahoo Lifestyle the concept of looking for a partner who submits to you has its roots in the "tradwife" and "manosphere" movements.

"We need to be very critical when we're hearing these concepts and actually think through what they materially mean," the University of Melbourne researcher said.

Milan-Cortina 2026 closes with ceremony in Verona

British athletes paraded at the closing ceremony in Verona following the most successful Winter Games ever for Team GB

The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have officially ended following the closing ceremony in northern Italy.

It took place at Verona Olympic Arena, despite none of the sporting events happening in the city, which is 75 miles from Milan.

After beginning with a tribute to classic Italian opera, flagbearers representing the 92 competing nations entered the stadium through large props from Aida and accompanied by a tribute to Italian film music.

The 'Drop of Fire' – the Olympic flame carried in a small glass vessel – was brought into the ancient arena to light up the rings before the parade of athletes.

VERONA, Italy — The Milan Cortina Olympics ended Sunday as the twin flames in co-host cities Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo were extinguished during a closing ceremony inside the ancient Verona Arena, roughly mid-distance between the far-flung mountain, valley and city venues that made these the most spread-out Winter Games ever.

In declaring the 2026 Games over, International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry told local organizers that they "delivered a new kind of winter Games and you set a new, very high standard for the future."

University of Queensland provides funding as a member of The Conversation AU.

A baby macaque monkey named Punch has gone viral for his heart-wrenching pursuit of companionship.

After being abandoned by his mother and rejected by the rest of his troop, his zookeepers at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan provided Punch with an orangutan plushie as a stand-in mother. Videos of the monkey clinging to the toy have gone viral worldwide.

But Punch’s attachment to his inanimate companion is not just the subject of a heartbreaking video. It also harks back to the story of a famous set of psychology experiments conducted in the 1950s by US researcher Harry Harlow.

Brisbane’s beloved Kookaburra Queen paddleboat faces uncertain future after sinking

Weddings, Mother’s Day celebrations, birthdays… if you’ve grown up in Brisbane, chances are you’ve marked a milestone aboard one of the Kookaburra Queen paddleboats — and now, one of these beloved vessels has been spotted sinking in the shallows.

There were originally two nearly identical vessels, built more than four decades ago for World Expo ’88.

The paddleboats, nicknamed the ‘Kookas’, closely resembled classic Mississippi River steamers in the US, with timber hulls, iconic paddlewheels and sweeping decks.

The design made them instantly recognisable on the Brisbane River, and both became beloved fixtures of river life.

Deeming rates set to rise, here's what it means for your pocket

Some pensioners and income support recipients could see small reductions in their payments after the federal government announced an increase deeming rates for the second time since the pandemic.

Deeming is a system used to estimate how much income people earn from financial assets such as savings, shares and managed funds.

Rather than assessing actual returns, Centrelink applies standard "deeming rates" to calculate income for pension and payment eligibility.

The Australian Government Actuary (AGA) recommended lifting deeming rates, which the federal government accepted, with an announcement on February 20 that changes would take effect from March 20, 2026. This is the same day pensions will also be indexed.

(Francesco Battistini, inviato a Verona) Dame e cicisbei, madame Butterfly in taffetà e carabinieri col pennacchio, fontane di luce e lampadari danzanti, cavalieri in polpe e candelabri rotanti, statue dorate e mori veneziani.
