Mikel Arteta says Arsenal must keep proving themselves worthy of top spot in the Premier League, starting with their clash against champions Liverpool. (0:41)

LONDON COLNEY, England — Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal have a "point to prove" against champions Liverpool as they aim to last the pace in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal sit six points clear at the table in pursuit of their first league success since 2004 having finished runners-up to Liverpool last term, their third consecutive second-place finish.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield in August in an early setback but Arne Slot's side arrive for Thursday's reverse fixture 14 adrift of their opponents after a turbulent campaign despite spending almost £450 million ($607.04m) in the summer market.

Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of several first-team players ahead of our clash with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

The boss was asked about several members of his squad in his pre-match press conference, including Kai Havertz, who is nearing a return to action.

“We are monitoring obviously his load, he has been out for a long time for two different reasons and he is very close,” Mikel said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. “He trained this morning again and hopefully we are going to have him available in the best version of Kai Havertz.”

    Arsenal v Liverpool: Team news

The fitness of Hugo Ekitike and Kai Havertz is being monitored ahead of the Premier League showdown between Liverpool and Arsenal on Thursday night.

Ekitike, the Reds' top scorer this season with 11 goals in all competitions, missed the 2-2 draw at Fulham last weekend due to a hamstring complaint and delayed onset muscle soreness.

Asked for an update on the Frenchman, head coach Arne Slot said on Wednesday morning: "He has not trained with us until now and let's see if he can today.

"I've said, I think, two or three days ago when we played Fulham that he is not going to be out for long, but because games come so fast he is in between maybe training with the team or it would take him one or two days extra."

Sobey finished with an equal career-high 37 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Phoenix captain was at the heart of a fiery clash late in overtime, but silenced the Hawks with a dunk to secure South East Melbourne's 16th win of the season.

Elton John launches premium non-alcoholic sparkling wine for sober nights out

Elton John has launched a new premium non-alcoholic sparkling wine designed to bring Champagne-level celebration to the growing 0% drinks market.

The pop icon has unveiled Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs, a sparkling Chardonnay made in Northern Italy and created in collaboration with Benchmark Drinks. The alcohol-free wine officially launches today (8 January).

Unlike traditional dealcoholised wines, the drink is produced using a fermentation process that does not generate alcohol at any stage. Instead of yeast, select bacteria are used to mirror the structure and aroma of a classic Blanc de Blancs, resulting in a brighter, fuller profile.

The sparkling features notes of apple, citrus blossom and honeysuckle, with a refined mineral finish. It also contains added green tea extract for texture and subtle tannins. The drink is vegan and vegetarian-friendly, with 19 calories per glass.

Elton John takes on Kylie Minogue and Gary Barlow by launching his own wine

Crafted with care and intention, it embodies the art of inclusion – inviting everyone to raise a glass, savour the sparkle, and share in the timeless celebration of togetherness."

WTA Brisbane Day 5 Predictions Including Amanda Anisimova vs Marta Kostyuk

There is a superb WTA schedule for Day 5 in Brisbane. Two-time Grand Slam runner-up Amanda Anisimova, Jessica Pegula, WTA Finals champion Elena Rybakina, and Paula Badosa are all set to play. As always, we at LWOT predict all the action in our articles. Mirra Andreeva vs Linda Noskova is among the matches predicted in a separate article.

Sasnovich will almost certainly use the same style as she did in her previous match against Clara Tauson. She frustrated the powerful Dane from start to finish by focusing on putting balls into the court and extracting unforced errors. Samsonova is notoriously inconsistent, making her level harder to predict. If Sasnovich plays as well again, her game is suitable for disrupting Samsonova if the No. 10 seed does not execute perfectly.
    Prediction: Sasnovich in 3

Tennis, WTA – Brisbane International presented by ANZ 2026: Kostyuk eliminates Putintseva

Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 16 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Brisbane International presented by ANZ by winning against Kazakh lucky loser Yulia Putintseva 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-0 on Wednesday.

Kostyuk, ranked No 26, will play the winner of the match between Australian wildcard Kimberly Birrell and American Amanda Anisimova, the second seed, next.

In the previous round, Putintseva, ranked No 74, beat American Hailey Baptiste (6-2, 6-4).

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been working together since their first crowd-pleasing partnership in Good Will Hunting. Their new crime thriller, inspired by true events, pivots on a familiar dilemma, at least when it comes to movie plots: to take, or not to take, a whole heap of money that randomly comes your way? After raiding a safe house, a team of Miami cops – including Affleck’s JD Byrne and Damon’s Dane Dumars – discover $24m stashed away. Legally required to count the money before leaving (cool law … what could possibly go wrong?), tensions build, distrust flares and outside forces – most notably an ominous voice on the telephone – begin to close in.

Here are the most-watched films in Australia so far in 2026 –

The holiday hangover has officially settled over Australia, and the first streaming numbers of the year paint a clear picture of how the nation spent its first week of 2026: catching up on the biggest films of late 2025 and retreating into the ultimate comfort nostalgia.

According to the latest charts from JustWatch for the week of December 29 to January 4, Australian living rooms were dominated by high-stakes mysteries, a massive horror revival, and a certain Boy Who Lived.

Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (#2) proves Benoit Blanc still knows how to solve a family argument—holiday leftovers and Daniel Craig’s southern drawl included. But it’s not just whodunits keeping eyes glued: action and horror are dominating. One Battle After Another (#1) is all-out chaos, while Weapons (#3), Sinners (#4), and 28 Years Later (#5) show the horror revival is very much alive.

Australia underlines its dominance to write its own Ashes story

So 4-1 it is, a scoreline that does a proper job of reflecting Australia's dominance in this Ashes series and spares no blushes in its appraisal of England.

Up for grabs in Sydney this week was control of the narrative. At 3-2, England would have been within its rights to claim a semblance of respect, and could have put the defeat down to a series of misfortunes, injustices and fine margins.

But 4-1 shuts the door on that. 4-1 puts this Australian team alongside its 2002/03 contemporary, which won convincingly by the same margin. 4-1 is a firm rebuttal of English rhetoric and a celebration of a number of Australian greats.

Australia overcome final-day jitters to secure Sydney win

Australia claim a 4-1 series scoreline after navigating sharp turn on a day five SCG pitch

Australia overcame one final fury over umpiring technology and a whole lot of final-day jitters to farewell Usman Khawaja with one last Test victory, their closest of an Ashes series they have convincingly set to a 4-1 margin.

Left 160 to get after an England third-innings rearguard led by Jacob Bethell's resplendent 154, the hosts recovered from losing their fifth wicket with 39 runs still needed on a wearing SCG surface thanks to an uneasy sixth-wicket stand between Alex Carey (16no) and Cameron Green (22no).

The pair's match-sealing 40-run union, somehow unbroken after several hairy late mix-ups, saw the Aussies home by five wickets. The close friends shared a hug after Carey hit Will Jacks for the winning runs through the off-side.

This England team’s most memorable brain explosions have occurred under the pressure of the contest. Equally impressive have been those that took place in the calm of meeting rooms and phone calls.

The lack of match preparation and casual arrogance of the planning have been well documented, but Jacob Bethell has shown in Melbourne and Sydney that his non-selection in the first three Test matches is another element in this dumbest Ashes tour.

‘Weak’ Australia whack as axed star’s return tipped, Stokes hand in Baz fate revealed

England’s media is licking its lips over the prospect of facing a “weak” Australia at home in the 2027 Ashes — yet still sharpening their knives for English coach Brendon McCullum and managing director of cricket Robert Key.

With the Ashes scoreline at 3-1 heading into the series finale at the SCG, English cricket writers are looking at conclusions of this tour and what they mean going forward.

A chaotic and historic victory at the MCG has given some optimism to the Poms — though the failings Down Under aren’t being ignored due to consolation wins.

By the time England return to Australia for their next Ashes tour in 2029, it will have been almost 50 years since the last truly competitive bout on these shores.

In 1982-83, an England side led by Bob Willis held the Ashes after Ian Botham’s extraordinary performances in the UK in 1981, and managed to keep their defence of the urn alive until the final day of the final Test in Sydney, where a draw was enough for the hosts to prevail 2-1.

Meet 5 Batters with Most Hundreds in Ashes

Ashes rivalry is like none other, and over the past 100 years and more, several superstars have made their names during this contest. We look at the top five batters with the most Ashes hundreds. The list includes one current player.

The greatest cricketer of all time, Sir Donald George Bradman, tops the list for batters with the most Ashes hundreds. The right-handed batter has 29 Test tons to his name, 19 of which came against England alone.

Next on this list is current batting star Steve Smith, Australia’s stand-in captain for the Sydney Test (2026), who has completed 13 Test tons against England. The right-hander loves playing against England and also at the SCG, where he hit his fifth Test hundred.

Steve Smith to Usman Khawaja: Top run-scorers in Ashes over the last 10 years

From Steve Smith’s consistency to Ben Stokes’ match-turning prowess, the Ashes between 2015 and 2026 have witnessed remarkable batting performances. While Australia’s dominance has often been fueled by the likes of Smith, Head, Warner, and Khawaja, England has relied on the stability of Root and the explosiveness of Stokes.

Steve Smith (Australia): Steve Smith leads the charts with a phenomenal 2,805 runs at an astonishing average of 66.78. Across 28 matches, Smith has scored 9 centuries and 12 fifties, proving his ability to deliver under pressure. His strike rate of 56.59 and 317 boundaries show that he combines technical mastery with aggressive intent when needed. Smith’s dominance has been a cornerstone of Australia’s batting over the last decade.
