Match Awards from Bayern Munich’s 5-0 “friendly” demolition of RB Salzburg

FC Bayern smashed Salzburg and Lennart Karl bagged a brace, who was your MotM?

Bayern Munich rocketed past RB Salzburg on the back of four second half goals courtesy of Felipe Chávez, Lennart Karl, and Tom Bischof. To be honest, the Austrians didn’t stand a chance. It was a routine warmup game for FC Bayern that shows they are (probably) ready to tackle the second half of the season.

Of all the Salzburg players on the pitch, Schlager (who only played the first half) was the least bad. You can tell that the Austrians are in the middle of a long winter break, because they weren’t ready for the intensity that Bayern Munich brought to the game. Schlager at least made a few interventions, including a major save on a Robben-esque shot by Michael Olise. That earns him the jersey swap — it was slim pickings.

Leading AI expert delays timeline for its possible destruction of humanity | AI (artificial intelligence)

Former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo says progress to AGI is ‘somewhat slower’ than first predicted

A leading artificial intelligence expert has rolled back his timeline for AI doom, saying it will take longer than he initially predicted for AI systems to be able to code autonomously and thus speed their own development toward superintelligence.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former employee of OpenAI, sparked an energetic debate in April by releasing AI 2027, a scenario that envisions unchecked AI development leading to the creation of a superintelligence, which – after outfoxing world leaders – destroys humanity.

The scenario rapidly won admirers and detractors. The US vice-president, JD Vance, appeared to reference AI 2027 in an interview last May when discussing the US’s artificial intelligence arms race with China. Gary Marcus, an emeritus professor of neuroscience at New York University, called the piece a “work of fiction” and various of its conclusions “pure science fiction mumbo jumbo”.

The Dangers of AI and Extreme Wealth Inequality

Rarely in politics do we see genuinely new big ideas; instead, we see old ideas repackaged and communicated through new media. However, new technology often has a dramatic impact. The most obvious examples: agriculture, the printing press, and the Industrial Revolution, each in its own way, rendered systems and old ideas obsolete.

So, it is with entrepreneur Oliver Libby’s new centrist treatise, Strong Floor No Ceiling: Building a New Foundation for the American Dream. Libby’s book (and its titular slogan) is the latest center-left argument making the same case: that policymakers need not curb extreme wealth so long as there is an adequate safety net to catch those who fall. This is a familiar neoliberal approach to tax and regulatory policy. At best, its adherents believe that some froth at the top of the economic chain is a small price to pay for the supposed economic dynamism that creates widespread growth in capitalist systems. Viewed cynically, it is a convenient politics for those solicitous of a particular cadre of big donors not explicitly aligned with the far right.

Towns facing temperatures above 45C as extreme heatwave blasts Australia

Those keen to exercise outside will need to get up early in the coming days as searing heat sweeps large parts of the country. (AAP: Bianca De Marchi)

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is warning of a multi-day heatwave covering more than half of the country.

Temperatures are forecast to exceed 45C in some areas, sparking extreme fire danger.

Parts of southern Australia are forecast to hit temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius for multiple days in a row this week, as intense heat makes its way across the country.

It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warns of what is likely to be the "most significant" heatwave south-eastern Australia has seen in six years.

Australians are being urged to heed fire warnings as temperatures soar across multiple states, bringing forecast conditions not seen since the Black Summer bushfires.

South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and NSW are set to swelter through oppressive temperatures into the weekend as a heatwave grips southeastern states, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The conditions are set to be the worst since the 2019-20 summer bushfires that killed more than 30 people and burned through millions of hectares.

More than half of Australia is set to swelter in blistering temperatures in what is expected to be the worst heatwave since the devastating black summer bushfires.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned that dry, hot conditions would create extreme fire conditions across several states as temperatures topped 45C in parts of the country.

The senior meteorologist Angus Hines said that western and south-western NSW were likely to experience multiple consecutive days of hot conditions this week, with temperatures in Sydney to climb into the high 30s or low 40s on Saturday.

Celtic’s Nancy catastrophe is another indicator of a club embroiled in turmoil | Ewan Murray

Even the return of Martin O’Neill is unlikely to placate supporters frustrated by poor performances, a lack of investment, and chaos in the boardroom

Any club confirming the end of an error after eight games owes an apology to their supporters. In Celtic’s case, even the admission of an all-time blunder in hiring Wilfried Nancy would be unlikely to placate the masses. Remorse has not been forthcoming anyway. As Martin O’Neill’s return as manager was confirmed, office bearers took it in turn to express disappointment at the Nancy affair. Which was very good of them.

Celtic do not have a monopoly on bad decision-making. It just currently feels as if that is the case. A club who have dominated in Scotland for more than a decade, who have vast resources and more scope to plan than others of much lower stature, should never have been seeking a fourth manager in one season. That they are points firmly towards a lack of strategy and direction. It is a preposterous situation. Celtic are lucky that O’Neill, 73, retains an appetite to work. He also ticks another box, that of being idolised in the stands.

'Steady hand' O'Neill backed to revive Celtic after 'disastrous' Nancy reign

Here are some of your views on Celtic's dismissal of manager Wilfried Nancy and head of football operations Paul Tisdale, plus the return of Martin O'Neill for a second interim stint.

John: How Nancy got the job is testament to the board sitting on their hands and not spending money. Lack of buying a centre forward has brought the house crumbling down around their ears. Martin is great in short term but how about Shaun Maloney and Scott Brown long term?

Len: O'Neill did a brilliant job rescuing Celtic's season, and didn't receive the respect he deserved. He must now be properly rewarded, with a salary and status equal to former director of football Paul Tisdale. Maloney should also receive the same contractual status and remuneration as the disastrous Nancy. It's only fair. O'Neill and Maloney are two proven international-class footballers and coaches. Tisdale and Nancy were charlatans. Who appointed them? And for what purpose?

Martin O’Neill returns as Celtic manager, Wilfried Nancy sacked after 33 days in charge – The Athletic

Martin O’Neill has returned to Celtic for a second time this season after the exit of Wilfried Nancy.

Nancy was appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal by the Scottish champions on December 3, joining from MLS side Columbus Crew, but lost six of his eight games in charge and was dismissed after just 33 days at the Glasgow club.

That means the 48-year-old has had the shortest stint of any permanent manager in the club’s history — previously the eight months of John Barnes in the 1999-00 season —and he was in charge for four days fewer than interim coach O’Neill, whom he succeeded in December.

'The Lincoln Lawyer': Everything to Remember Before Season 4

The Lincoln Lawyer is returning to Netflix for its fourth season on February 5, 2026, almost a year and-a-half after Season 3 premiered. Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) found himself in a precarious position at the end of Season 3, and this will serve as the main plot point for Season 4. Before diving into that incident, it's important to recall the pivotal events in Season 3 that led up to and include the huge shocking cliffhanger ending.

Through Season 3, which boasts an impressive 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, Mickey is doing what he does best, defending clients even if it seems they're probably guilty. The main case this season centers around Mickey's friend Gloria Dayton (Fiona Rene), a prostitute known as Glory Days who has also worked as a police informant. She eventually became friends with Mickey. He took a liking to her as she was someone he wanted to help, believing she had so much potential. So, when she was tragically killed, the case became personal for him. Believing a drug dealer she ratted on might have orchestrated her death, he decides to defend Julian La Cosse (Devon Graye), Gloria's online "pimp" who is accused of her murder.

Aryna Sabalenka defends 'Battle of the Sexes' match after Brisbane International win

Aryna Sabalenka defended her 'Battle of the Sexes' match against Nick Kyrgios after she opened her 2026 season with a 47-minute victory against Cristina Bucsa.

Women's world number one Sabalenka lost 6-3 6-3 to Kyrgios in a much-publicised exhibition match in Dubai last month.

Belarusian Sabalenka, a four-time major winner, said it helped her fitness after she swept aside Spain's Bucsa, ranked 28th in the world, 6-0 6-1 in the second round of the Brisbane International.

"When you play against a guy, the intensity is completely different," Sabalenka said.

"Especially when there is Nick, who is drop-shotting every other shot, you move a lot, so there was a great fitness for me."

    Perth Scorchers 153 for 8 (Marsh 37, Fanning 31, Pope 4-23, Shamsi 3-30) beat Adelaide Strikers 120 (Scott 33, Short 31, Paris 3-22, Turner 2-1) by 33 runs

Veteran fast bowler Joel Paris has inspired a late fightback as Perth Scorchers overcame an all-out spin assault to post a fighting 33-run win over the Adelaide Strikers at Optus Stadium.

Tabraiz Shamsi unleashed his trademark shoe celebration and Lloyd Pope starred as Strikers spun a web of magic in Perth to restrict the Scorchers to 153 for 8. In reply, Strikers were on track for victory at 48 for 1 and 86 for 4 before Paris sparked a big collapse.

Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers quick Joel Paris proud of spinners but says Optus Stadium still pace friendly

Perth Scorchers quick Joel Paris admits there’s a perception the five-time champions have a weakness against spin, especially at Optus Stadium, after Adelaide Strikers played four tweakers on Sunday night.

The Strikers bowled 16 straight overs of spin to brilliant effect, including a stretch of 3-2 inside seven balls that saw the Scorchers muddle through to a below-par 8-153 despite the openers putting on 72 runs.

They were even so eager to put Perth through a spin trail they sent out an SOS message to South African veteran Tabraiz Shamsi to join the squad from the UAE a game early.

However, as much as Perth struggled, the visitors fared just as poorly.
