Geminid meteor shower: where to watch Australia’s biggest shooting star show this weekend

Stargazers will be able to see potentially dozens of meteors an hour, with the peak on Sunday night

Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast

They’re bright, they’re plentiful and the Geminids – which make up what’s regarded as one of the best annual meteor showers to witness – are about to reach their peak viewing time.

The Geminid meteors have already been active in our skies since 4 December, building up to the best night of the year to see them on Sunday.

Here’s what you need to know about the meteor shower and where you can best see it.

Spectacular meteor shower to light up Perth skies on weekend

Perth’s night sky is set to light up in a “natural fireworks show” this weekend, as the Geminids meteor shower is scheduled to spark up the dark.

The Geminids, which are active every year in early and mid-December, are characterised by their colourful and radiant showers and will be visible nation-wide this weekend.

Perth Observatory tour administrator Matt Woods says there are plenty of places around the metropolitan area where viewers can see the meteors, but will be more visible the further out from the city.

“Places like the South Ledge Lookout at Mundaring Weir, Point Peron, Rottnest Island, and Lake Leschenaultia are close to the city, and you should see a decent number of meteors,” Mr Woods said.

WA Bushfire: West River and Fitzgerald residents urged to still be alert as warning downgraded

A fire in West River and Fitzgerald has been downgraded after residents were earlier urged to leave their homes as the large uncontrolled bushfire moved north-west rapidly.

Sparked in a paddock about 1.10pm on Wednesday, the blaze resulted in an emergency warning for those in the area bounded by West River Road, Old Ongerup Road and Fitzgerald Road in Fitzgerald and West River in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

The warning was downgraded an advice level just before 7pm, however, residents were still warned to stay alert.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services say the blaze has been contained but is not yet under control.

Greg Lynn's murder conviction for death of High Country camper quashed

The Court of Appeal has set aside Greg Lynn's conviction for the murder of elderly camper Carol Clay.

The decision comes about 18 months after a jury returned a split verdict in Mr Lynn's high-profile double murder trial.

Former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn has had his murder conviction overturned on appeal, and will face a new trial.

Mr Lynn, 59, was found guilty last year after a high-profile Supreme Court trial of murdering retiree Carol Clay in Victoria's High Country in March 2020.

He was acquitted of the murder of her camping companion, Russell Hill.

Mr Lynn subsequently appealed his sentence and conviction on four key grounds, some of them linked to the prosecution's conduct during the trial's closing arguments, and labelled his 32-year prison sentence "manifestly excessive".

Greg Lynn appeal: high country murder conviction overturned

Former Jetstar pilot will face a new trial after his conviction over the 2020 killing of camper Carol Clay was overturned

Former pilot Greg Lynn has had his conviction for murdering an elderly camper in the Victorian high country overturned in a stunning decision made by the state’s highest court.

Lynn, 59, was found guilty in June last year of murdering 73-year-old grandmother Carol Clay in 2020, but was acquitted of murdering her fellow camper and lover Russell Hill, 74.

He was sentenced to a minimum of 24 years in prison for murdering Clay.

The Victorian court of appeal on Thursday ruled that Lynn’s conviction be overturned, and ordered that a new trial should be held in the case.

Regulator acts against super fund HESTA after 'severe, prolonged disruption'

HESTA is one of Australia's largest super funds, with 1.1 million members. (ABC News)

Banking and superannuation regulator APRA has imposed additional licence conditions against one of Australia's largest funds HESTA, after a major disruption to services earlier this year.

APRA says the "severe, prolonged disruption" caused direct harm to some of HESTA's 1.1 million members.

HESTA will be required to conduct reviews into its risk management framework and board governance.

One of Australia's largest superannuation funds HESTA has been hit with regulatory action, after a "severe, prolonged disruption" that left 1.1 million Australians unable to access their funds for weeks.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has imposed additional licence conditions on HESTA, raising concerns about the fund's risk management and board governance during its transition from one outsourced administration provider to another earlier this year.

This page will be updated as and when PACBI receives further important questions.

Live Nation’s direct business with genocidal Israel—through its complicit subsidiary Live Nation Israel—is the most vulnerable to our collective BDS pressure. The BDS theory of change prioritizes gradually yet persistently building sufficient people power to end links of complicity, one-by-one, based on strategic target selection criteria. This time-honored strategy is contributing significantly to isolating genocidal Israel, especially through targeted, lawful sanctions, as even Israeli PM Netanyahu (wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity) and US president Trump have recently admitted.

Live Nation: Artwashing Israel’s Live-Streamed Genocide

Live Nation Israel stands with the genocidal Israeli military and artwashes apartheid

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), a founding member of the Palestinian-led BDS movement, calls for pressure on Live Nation Entertainment, including strategic, targeted boycotts, until it takes meaningful steps to account for its deep complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza—especially by dropping its subsidiary Live Nation Israel that openly supports the genocidal Israeli military and artwashes apartheid.

We call for strategic BDS pressure on Live Nation Entertainment, the world’s biggest live events promoter, until it:

While we recognize that Live Nation’s venues, festivals and other subsidiaries cannot easily untether themselves from their parent company and have limited control when it comes to Live Nation Entertainment’s decision making, they are irrefutably implicated in its complicity. The same goes for venues and festivals that Live Nation operates, and those for which it is an exclusive or primary programmer. They are particularly well positioned to contribute to challenging this complicity, and have an undeniable ethical responsibility to do so.
