Premiership coach’s call on Roos job revealed; GF umps announced — AFL Daily

A top prospective North Melbourne coaching candidate has reportedly revealed his intentions.

Meanwhile, uncertainty over the future of Brisbane mastermind Chris Fagan has been revealed. Read on in AFL Daily.

The AFL has confirmed the umpiring panel for Saturday’s grand final between the Dockers and Lions.

Hayden Meyer headlines the selection, with Brett Rosebury, Brendan Hosking and Nick Foot named as the four field umpires.

Adam Simpson backs away from applying to coach North Melbourne after battling ‘awkward’ situation

Adam Simpson has backed away from applying to coach his beloved former club North Melbourne.

A two-time Kangaroos premiership player and former captain, the 50-year-old has been out of coaching since leaving West Coast late in the 2024 season.

North’s shock decision to sack Alastair Clarkson earlier this month thrust Simpson back into the spotlight just a month after he helped Carlton appoint Josh Fraser as their new coach.

Fellow North great John Longmire, who has remained at Sydney since stepping down as Swans coach at the end of 2024, has also been mooted for a return to Arden St.

Simpson met with Roos football boss Todd Viney and CEO Jen Watt this week as the club looks to form a shortlist of candidates.

John Longmire makes call on North Melbourne coaching gig

Premiership-winning coach John Longmire has chosen not to put his name forward for the vacant North Melbourne coaching role.

Longmire coached Sydney from 2011-24 and took the Swans to five Grand Finals and one premiership before ending his senior coach role and moving into another area at the club at the end of 2024.

Seven is reporting that Longmire, after considering applying for the North Melbourne senior coach role, has opted against it.

The Roos are said to be open to all candidates, but it is believed they would ideally target a first-time coach rather than a second-time coach such as Longmire or Adam Simpson; who also recently pulled out of the race for the job.

The 35-year-old reached this milestone in his 394th international match, joining an elite group of eight batters worldwide. Root required only three runs to achieve the landmark but was dismissed for 44 runs off 52 deliveries, including five fours.

Sunday night, users of Meta’s AI assistant Muse started getting a strange error message when they tried to buy goods on Amazon. As spotted by GeekWire, the error message read: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”

In other words, Muse isn’t welcome as a shopper — and anyone trying to buy something on Amazon through the AI agent will have to find it somewhere else.

Amazon is keeping Meta’s Muse out of its shopping carts

People who send the personal AI assistant to Amazon are seeing a warning that "continued access by an unauthorized AI agent" violates the retailer's conditions of use.

A spokesperson for the e-commerce giant said in a statement that Amazon has requested that Meta remove its marketplace from Muse.

Unlike chatbots, which primarily answer questions, AI agents are designed to take actions on a user's behalf — including buying things. Amazon's block shows that even a widely used personal agent can't assume all of the internet is open for business.

The move has been flagged by some Muse users on X. Startup founder Jonathan Wegener shared a screenshot of the warning, writing: "Muse vs Amazon bot detection. Uh oh."

Shein, Temu shoppers do not feel responsible for environmental concerns, study finds

A new study of ultra-fast fashion buyers found price was one of the biggest shopping motivators.  (AP: Richard Drew)

Shoppers of ultra-fast fashion companies, such as Shein and Temu, say despite being aware of environmental and ethical concerns, other factors such as price, convenience and not feeling personally responsible keep them coming back.

A new study published in the Journal of Global Fashion Marketing this week found millennials, who frequently expressed concern about ethical and sustainability issues, often did not translate this concern into purchasing behaviour.

The study surveyed 20 Australian millennials who shopped on ultra-fast fashion sites about what informed their purchasing behaviours.

Millions of Australians hooked on ultra-fast fashion despite environmental cost

Australian shoppers are addicted to ultra-fast fashion, with retailers Temu and Shein luring more than seven million locals into a buying frenzy despite serious environmental concerns.

New research has found shopping on the throwaway platforms is well thought out and planned, with consumers building shopping lists and waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

“So they shop, they build a wishlist, and then when it’s payday or when there’s a flash sale, they are ready to pull the trigger and buy,” Associate Professor Carol Tan from RMIT University said.

Social media is a major influence fuelling the craze, exposing shoppers to the latest trends which change overnight.

‘Disgraceful’ moment India ‘bullied umpire’ to avoid all-time upset

India have scraped home by the skin of their teeth and avoided an enormous upset against Japan – but it didn’t come without some late controversy.

In a rain-affected match that was restricted to just five overs per side, India posted a total of 4-32 after Shreyas Iyer nailed a quickfire 16 off 12.

Japan, who are the ICC’s 41st-ranked team in the format, put up a serious fight in the run-chase that went down to the wire at Sano Cricket Ground.

Axar Patel took the ball for India in the final over and with Japan requiring six runs to win off the last four deliveries, umpire Chris Thugate called a leg-side wide.

Iyer, Sundar primed for India's historic T20I against Japan

India will face Japan for the first time in international cricket on Tuesday, in a one-off T20I at the Sano International Cricket Ground.

The fixture comes ahead of India's Asian Games 2026 campaign, a 10-team men's T20 competition from 24 September to 3 October in Aichi-Nagoya. India will go in as defending champions, having won gold at the last edition in Hangzhou in 2023.

Japan, an ICC Associate Member since 2005, are still catching up with the game's traditional heavyweights.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer delved deep into India's preparation ahead of the historic fixture.

"I saw a little bit of reels going here and there. But yes, we will be doing our studies and knowing about the players more," he said.

Banned Swan falls well short in Brownlow Medal vote

Isaac Heeney finished outside of the top five in the Brownlow Medal count.

Heeney was one of five Swans players stood down by the club following a post-match incident in Melbourne last month.

The AFL has avoided the unwanted scenario of one of Sydney's suspended players winning the Brownlow Medal, with Isaac Heeney finishing outside the count's top five.

The league had a contingency plan in place if Heeney had won the game's highest individual honour.

But Nick Daicos's record-breaking number of votes, and prolific polling from Bailey Smith and Marcus Bontempelli, meant the plan never needed to come into play.

Its inevitable that Brownlow win will make Daicos richer; Dockers star slams flight price gouging; AFL green-lights rookie rule change

Nick Daicos will receive a financial windfall worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from his Brownlow win, including a bonus that was written into his Collingwood playing contract and proceeds from a marketing campaign that kicked off before the medal was even around his neck.

A box of Nike T-shirts commemorating Daicos’ triumph arrived at Crown Palladium while the count was still in progress, while towering billboards went up around Melbourne.

Nike, a Collingwood partner with whom the 23-year-old also has an independent deal, launched the campaign branded “inevitable” on the morning of the Brownlow count.

Daicos is one of the small handful of AFL players who command such independent deals, earning more than $500,000 a year from commercial partnerships alongside his Magpies contract, which this masthead reported was worth $1.2-1.3 million last season and runs to 2029.

‘Has suddenly changed’: The ‘line in the sand’ Bunnies calls that could end superstars’ stints

Former premiership winner Braith Anasta says South Sydney may no longer be putting all their chips in with Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker after stunning contract updates this week.

Souths have reportedly offered Walker $300,000 for next season while Latrell Mitchell is set to test the open market from November 1.

Walker and his camp are said to be furious that Souths have offered the club stalwart such a tiny amount for what will likely be his final year in the game.

Joey’s warning as Latrell heads to NRL open market

Andrew Johns has issued a warning to Latrell Mitchell after news the superstar will test his value on the NRL market come November 1.

Mitchell has just one season remaining on his lucrative South Sydney contract, which is said to be worth upwards of $1 million a year.

He’s still only 29 years old, is a two-time premiership winner and one of the game’s most destructive and influential players when fit and firing.

But injuries have dogged him in recent years and he’s played just 34 NRL games in the past three seasons.

He started this year with a bang before a back issue sidelined him for most of the season. He made it back for the last three games but couldn’t inspire the Rabbitohs to a win over Newcastle come finals, and was largely shown up by his veteran rival Dane Gagai.

Inside the crackdown on a $23 billion black market

Black market fishing costs legal operators billions of dollars globally per year.

Australian authorities are cracking down on the industry, issuing large fines and crushing boats.

Authorities are looking to scale up their surveillance equipment to combat the issue.

He looks like an ordinary angler, but this 43-year-old man is anything but.

In the waters between Brisbane and Russell Island, he was caught poaching mud crabs and selling them in south-east Queensland.

"Mud crabs can retail anywhere up to $64 a kilo for high-quality, top-grade mud crabs," said Graeme Bolton, director-general of Queensland's Department of Primary Industries.

Last year, other seafood species such as threadfin salmon, molluscs and mulloway were uncovered at the man's house following a raid by fisheries officers.

Fisherman fined $10,000 and boat destroyed amid crackdown on illegal trend in Aussie waters

As one Aussie state continues cracking down on the illegal seafood trade, fishers are being warned they could lose their boats and face hefty fines.

A Queensland man was fined $10,000 after Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) officers uncovered an illegal seafood operation involving the sale of mud crabs, king threadfin salmon and mulloway.

The marine animals were taken from Queensland waters without the required commercial authority, QBFP said.

The man was targeted and surveilled by officers who suspected wrongdoing as part of their ongoing crackdown on the black market seafood trade.

Australia's illicit seafood trade is estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars annually.

    Poacher intercepted off Northern Territory

A foreign vessel has been detained, its crew suspected of fishing illegally in the Arafura Sea, in an interception by The Australian Border Force (ABF) as part of the ongoing Operation Lunar crackdown.

A patrol intercepted the vessel near the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (AEEZ) boundary, north of the Wessel Islands in the Northern Territory. A boarding party identified evidence of suspected fisheries offences and seized 100kg of fresh and dry reef fish, and roe.

Following consultation with the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), the vessel was seized and its crew detained.

The crew have been transported to Darwin for further investigation by AFMA in relation to suspected offences against the Fisheries Management Act 1991.

Australia confirms F-35 fighter jet parts were mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong

Australia’s defense minister said Tuesday that F-35 fighter jet parts had been mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong, following reports US lawmakers were investigating the mishap.

“We’ve been made aware of this, and we’re obviously working with the United States and Lockheed in terms of how we can assist in this investigation,” Defense Minister Richard Marles told reporters in Adelaide.

Politico first reported last week that the F-35 parts shipment bound for the United States for repairs were rerouted in transit from Australia this summer, citing three people familiar with the matter.

An intermediary was transporting the parts on behalf of F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin, the outlet reported.

A shipment of F-35 jet parts were unexpectedly sent to Hong Kong after leaving Australia earlier this year.

That sparked concerns that China might have accessed technological secrets from the US jet fighter program.

Defence Minister Richard Marles played down the significance of the apparent security breach and said the US and Lockheed Martin were investigating.

Defence Minister Richard Marles has confirmed Australia is helping the US investigate how F-35 jet fighter parts were mistakenly diverted to Hong Kong, but says no technologically "sensitive" components have been lost.

Classified Australian F-35 parts disappear in Hong Kong

First reported in Politico and later confirmed by the Pentagon, the shipment of components from Australia was bound for the United States for repairs before it was rerouted to Hong Kong and disappeared.

The shipment reportedly included an F-35 canopy, which is covered in a sensitive radar-absorbent material that degrades over time and requires subsequent repair or replacement. The nature of prior generations of radar-resistant canopy materials, such as gold used on the F-16 fighter jets from the late 1980s, were classified.

Australia does not possess a facility capable of repairing the canopies for the RAAF’s fleet of 72 F-35 fighters.
