He’s Aussie golf’s forgotten major champ. That could change if he pulls off an even bigger career feat

When asked to name a male Australian major champion, most golf fans’ minds will not jump straight to Geoff Ogilvy.

The 2006 US Open winner is undoubtedly one of the nation’s finest ever on the fairways and greens.

But the 49-year-old, who developed his game as a youngster at 9-hole public course Cheltenham next door to top ten course in the country Victoria and only a couple of booming drives away from Royal Melbourne, has largely operated away from the spotlight.

    Power Rankings: Presidents Cup

If you can’t beat ‘em, steal their playbook. Even better, revise it and give it back.

That’s a provocative narrative, but even if you played along, it’s also revisionist history ahead of this week’s Presidents Cup, where the United States possesses a 10-game winning streak and has lost only once in the history of the biennial competition.

Contested this year on Course No.3 at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago, it very much is not the same layout last seen by golf’s professional ranks at the 2019 BMW Championship. Since, a course overhaul co-spearheaded by none other than the visiting captain of the International Team, .css-vqpqpw{transition-property:var(–chakra-transition-property-common);transition-duration:var(–chakra-transition-duration-fast);transition-timing-function:var(–chakra-transition-easing-ease-out);cursor:pointer;outline:2px solid transparent;outline-offset:2px;color:#004c95;-webkit-text-decoration:underline!important;text-decoration:underline!important;-webkit-user-drag:none;}.css-vqpqpw:focus-visible,.css-vqpqpw[data-focus-visible]{box-shadow:var(–chakra-shadows-outline);}.css-vqpqpw:hover,.css-vqpqpw[data-hover]{color:#0084FF;}.css-vqpqpw:focus,.css-vqpqpw[data-focus]{border:1px solid #004c95;border-radius:0.4rem;}.css-vqpqpw:visited{color:#551A8B;}Geoff Ogilvy, was completed, but that was before the Aussie was handed the reins for the event. Still, it cannot hurt that the man in charge understands the strategic advantages (and potential pitfalls) better than anyone else associated with the assemblage of global talent assigned with improving on their 1-13-1 record.

Live: ASX to rise, AI rally pushes Nasdaq to record high, oil falls below $US100

The Australian share market is likely to start the day higher after Wall Street's AI stocks surged, pushing the tech-heavy Nasdaq index to a new record high.

Oil prices fell to their lowest level since early September on investors' renewed hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough to end the US-Iran war.

40 year from now,  Australian will have fewer babies due to a declining fertility rate.

That is Treasury's prediction of how things will look in 2066, according to its latest Intergenerational Report.

The forecast for Australia in 2066 also points to slower growth, mounting pressure from an aging population, and growing intergenerational pressures, particularly around housing and wealth.

Nasdaq jumps 2% to close at a record, buoyed by surge in AI stocks, as well as cooling oil and yields

U.S. stocks rose on Monday as key technology names advanced and oil prices and Treasury yields slipped, with Wall Street looking to recover from a mostly lower week.

‘The white males no longer rule’: Australia’s changed, and not in a way that helps One Nation

George Megalogenis is one of Australia’s most respected political journalists and commentators. His latest book, Three Shocks, maintains that Australia has undergone seismic changes in recent years which are only just being recognised.

Fitz: George, congratulations on the book. I can’t say that I’ve read it cover-to-cover, but in the words of Gough Whitlam when I once asked him had he read John Edwards’ book on Paul Keating, “Comrade, I have glanced at it extensively”. And I’ve read extracts and got the guts of it. Can we go through what the three shocks are for Australia, in the title?

CNN, MS NOW and Politico sue over White House ban

CNN, MS NOW and Politico have asked a Washington court to reverse Donald Trump's decision to deny them White House access.

Reporters from the three major news outlets were blocked from the White House at the weekend over reporting that the US president described as "fake news".

Leading US networks later suspended televised pool coverage of Mr Trump in solidarity with CNN.

The three American media outlets banned from the White House have taken legal action against US President Donald Trump, accusing him of a "direct assault" on constitutional free speech rights.

CNN, MS NOW and Politico lodged a complaint in a Washington DC court after their staff's access passes were revoked over the weekend.

CNN, MS Now and Politico accurately call last week’s sudden lockout ‘a direct assault on the first amendment’. That’s right

On Monday, the three news organizations that had been kicked out of the White House because of Donald Trump’s latest fit of pique sued the president and three top advisers.

An accompanying statement by CNN, MS Now and Politico accurately calls last week’s sudden lockout “a direct assault on the first amendment”.

The legal action is the right move, of course, and one that may prevail since the ban seems to be a clear case of what press-rights lawyers call “viewpoint discrimination”. In other words, Trump didn’t like their stories so he removed their access.

Fox News joins TV rivals to hit back at Trump’s White House ban

New York | Major American television networks, including Donald Trump’s favoured broadcaster Fox News, have agreed to suspend their coverage of the White House to protest the president’s ban on CNN and two other outlets.

The White House removed CNN from the schedule for the Monday (Tuesday AEST) pool, a regular rotation of broadcasters that covers the White House and shares footage with news organisations around the world. This enacts the ban on the network that Trump announced on Friday, along with rival broadcaster MS Now and online outlet Politico.

Scientists opened a sealed envelope after 10 years. Gravity still didn’t make sense

For 10 years, physicist Stephan Schlamminger had been chasing one of the most stubborn numbers in science. Now, after a decade of experiments, corrections, and painstaking analysis, the answer was sitting inside a sealed envelope.

Schlamminger, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), had spent much of the previous decade trying to measure the universal gravitational constant. Known to physicists as big G, this fundamental number determines the strength of gravitational attraction throughout the universe.

The number hidden in the envelope was the key that would finally unscramble his experimental data and reveal what his team had measured.

NIST Measures Gravity With Masses Small Enough To Move By Hand

For over 225 years, scientists have struggled to pinpoint the value of big G, the universal gravitational constant, despite its fundamental role in governing the cosmos. Now, after a decade-long effort, NIST physicist Stephan Schlamminger has unveiled results from a painstaking measurement of this elusive constant.

“The time had come to open the envelope,” Schlamminger admitted, unsure of the secret number his team’s work would reveal. Despite gravity’s constant presence, big G remains the least well-known of the four fundamental forces, a disparity researchers hope to resolve with increasingly precise experiments using masses small enough to move by hand.

Scientists outline how spacecraft could reach a nearby black hole within a century

A physicist outlines how laser-driven nanocraft could someday reach a nearby black hole and test gravity directly. (CREDIT: Wikimedia / AI-Generated / CC BY-SA 4.0)

Humanity may someday attempt something considerably more ambitious than photographing a black hole: sending a spacecraft directly to one.

The idea would require a suitable black hole to be discovered surprisingly close to Earth, along with technologies that do not yet exist. But calculations suggest the journey is not forbidden by physics.

Cosimo Bambi of Fudan University explores the concept in iScience, describing gram-scale spacecraft propelled by enormous ground-based laser arrays. If a black hole exists 20 to 25 light-years away, a probe traveling at one-third the speed of light could reach it in 60 to 75 years.

The Brownlow record Cats star could break … but he may lose another

Cats star Patrick Dangerfield could earn another Brownlow Medal record this year

PATRICK Dangerfield already owns the record for the most three-vote games in Brownlow Medal history, but could he add an even bigger achievement to his glittering resume on Monday night?

The Geelong skipper needs just four votes to move past Gary Ablett jnr as the highest-polling player the award has ever seen.

AFL.com.au's Brownlow Predictor has Dangerfield polling three votes for the season – one against Adelaide in round 13, and two against Brisbane in round 17 – which would put him on par with Ablett jnr.

But he's a proven vote getter and it would be no surprise if he snuck a few extra votes to stand alone at the top.

Dangerfield Ties Record for the Most Votes in Brownlow Medal History

Geelong's skipper has equalled Gary Ablett Junior for the most votes in Brownlow Medal history

Patrick Dangerfield's illustrious AFL career has seen him reach yet another remarkable milestone, with Geelong's captain equalling Gary Ablett Junior for the most votes polled in Brownlow Medal history.

Receiving three votes at the AFL's night of nights on Monday, Dangerfield joined his former teammate and Cats great atop the leaderboard, taking his career tally to 262 votes which is the most of any player in the history of the award.

Geelong have plenty of representation near the top of the leaderboard for career totals at the Brownlow, with Dangerfield and Ablett Jnr occupying the top spot, while Joel Selwood is also within the top 10.

The Brownlow Medal record Geelong star could claim… but one he may lose

AFL superstar and Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield is four Brownlow Medal votes away from eclipsing current record holder and former teammate Gary Ablett Jr.

Dangerfield is on 259 votes across his glittering career, which began in Adelaide before making the switch to the Cats ahead of the 2016 season.

It was that year the 'Danger' claimed the Brownlow Medal, and was on track to go back-to-back, albeit under suspension before Dustin Martin toppled the count.

Ablett Jnr (262 votes) won two Brownlows during his time – one at Geelong; one at Gold Coast – but arguably should've had more.

In 2007 he was surprisingly pipped by teammate Jimmy Bartel, and then again by Western Bulldogs Adam Cooney the following year.
