Mitch McConnell returns to Senate after months-long absence

The 84-year-old said he was prepared to cast his first vote after rampant speculation about his health

Mitch McConnell, the former Republican Senate majority leader, returned to the Capitol on Monday and cast his first vote after a months‑long absence that fueled rampant speculation about his health.

The 84-year-old senator has been away from the Senate since mid-June, following what his office said was a fall that left him hospitalized. He was discharged from a rehabilitation center last month.

“Today, I’ll cast my first Senate vote since I took a bad fall back in June,” McConnell said in a statement. “I’m really looking forward to being back on the Senate floor and seeing my colleagues.

Prince Harry's children changing schools due to security concerns

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are moving their children to a new school.

      (Reuters: Hollie Adams)

The children of Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are to swap schools after just two days.

The distance between their home and the original school, with heavy traffic in the area, had caused concern for their security team.

The duke and duchess's security is currently being reviewed by a government committee.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan's children are set to change schools after just two days due to concerns about their security while travelling to the site.

Last month, Prince Harry, the younger son of King Charles, and his family relocated to Britain after six years of living in California, with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, starting school in September.

Committee to reconsider Harry and Meghan’s publicly funded police protection now they are full-time residents

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will have a review of their publicly funded security following their return to the UK.

The royal and VIP executive committee (Ravec), which oversees tax-funded security for royalty and public figures, is to reconsider Harry and Meghan’s level of police protection.

The committee met last week to discuss the couple’s case, now they and their children are full-time residents in the UK and not just visitors.

It will be the first risk assessment for Meghan since the couple stepped back as working members of the royal family in 2020.

Gary Oldman Predicts HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Will Be ‘More Satisfying’ for Fans Than the Movies

Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in four "Harry Potter" movies, said he believes HBO's forthcoming TV series adaptation set in the Wizarding World will be a bigger crowd-pleaser than the Warner Bros. films.

That's because the movies were significantly abridged from J.K. Rowling's original books, whereas HBO's "Harry Potter" is including far more of the source material, the British actor said in a recent interview with EW.

Gary Oldman expects HBO's Harry Potter will satisfy fans

Actor Gary Oldman has been in the news quite a bit lately as he promotes the latest season of Apple TV’s Slow Horses: he’s offered his two cents on the James Bond casting race, clarified what he may or may not know about the James Bond casting race, commented on the passing of his Dark Knight co-star Heath Ledger, and has generally been a courteous bloke to his Horses co-star and current Bond hopeful Jack Lowden. Now, Oldman, who played the renegade wizard Sirius Black in 2004’s Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, is weighing in on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot series, which suggests Oldman is circling the bottom of the Slow Horses season six press tour at long last.

Arman Tsarukyan in do-or-die situation at UFC 331: ‘If I lose this fight, I’m never going to see a title fight’

Arman Tsarukyan knows there’s no room for error in his co-main event fight against Mauricio Ruffy

Arman Tsarukyan was set up for a lightweight title shot back in January 2025 but a last minute back injury knocked him out of his fight against Islam Makhachev and he’s never been afforded another shot at the belt as a result.

Now almost two years later, Tsarukyan is still the No. 1 contender at 155 pounds but instead of competing for gold at UFC 331, he’s taking on Mauricio Ruffy in a fight that could potentially earn him that title fight opportunity. By all accounts, Tsarukyan has accepted his punishment for the injury that forced a last-minute change to a major card but he also believes it’s win or go home on Sept. 19 if he ever hopes to compete for UFC gold.

Alexander Volkanovski: Mauricio Ruffy 'just picks up things straight away'

Ruffy (14-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) takes on Arman Tsarukyan (23-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in Saturday's five-round co-main event at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Their pivotal lightweight clash is expected to be a No. 1 contender bout.

Ruffy recently left Fighting Nerds to join UFC featherweight champion Volkanovski's camp in Australia. Volkanovski has diligently been working on Volkanovski's takedown defense.

"He's just an athlete. He just picks up things straight away," Volkanovski said of Ruffy on the UFC 331 Countdown. "And just get repetition when he's not even thinking, when he's tired, these things are automatically happening. We want to get that to a point where it feels like he's reacting with muscle memory. There are so many athletes here that have my sort of style, takedown defense. That's how we all are here – never giving up on any little position.

SA Health worker reprimanded over Tony Modra records

According to ABC News, one SA Health employee has been reprimanded for accessing the private medical records of AFL legend Tony Modra after he was seriously injured in a truck crash. SA Health said two other employees remain under investigation.

The department said the number of employees being investigated for potentially inappropriate access had been revised from nine to three. Of those three, one person has been reprimanded and two investigations continue. Six people are no longer under investigation, SA Health said, adding that any sanction becomes part of an employee’s permanent record.

In July, SA Health said nine staff members were either being investigated over alleged inappropriate access or assessed to determine whether their access had always been appropriate. The department also apologised to Modra’s family at that time for any distress caused.

Bloodletting is an ancient therapy, dating back at least three millennia, and traditionally used to "cure" a range of ills.

Whether through leeches or lancets, practitioners drew blood from the patient to rebalance their humours in hopes of a cure.

Perhaps most famously, the USA's first president, George Washington, had more than one-and-a-half litres of blood removed in an attempted cure for epiglottitis that likely caused, or at least hastened, his death in 1799.

Fortunately for us, the practice fell out of favour as medical science progressed in the 19th century, and is now restricted to a few specific diseases where it has been shown to help.

Aussies are being warned to brace for a brutal double rate hike as market pricing peaks for a fourth rise in days – and a hidden tax trap threatens to force the Reserve Bank into a horror fifth spike.

After cutting rates three times in 2025 – which it un-did with three hikes in early 2026 – the Reserve Bank now finds itself pressured by long-term interest rate pricing, with traders already looking well beyond the next move.

Institutional traders went from a 50/50 coin flip on August 31 to an overwhelming 76 per cent expectation of a September rate hike. (Source: ASX)

Police officer who put suspect in headlock and punched him 9 times faces misconduct hearing

A police officer who punched a suspect nine times in the head used unreasonable force on multiple occasions, a police misconduct hearing has been told.

PC Richard Williams faces eight allegations relating to the arrest of Steven Clark, including using a headlock or "choker", unreasonable use of incapacitant spray, and throwing or dropping Clark into the back of a police van.

A misconduct hearing at North Wales Police headquarters in Colwyn Bay heard Williams denies wrongdoing.

He was cleared of assault and intentional strangulation following a seven-day trial in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, in 2025.

In May 2023, police were called to Porthmadog in Gwynedd, following a report of a domestic argument.

A police officer cleared in court after being filmed punching a man during an arrest faces a misconduct hearing next week.

In May last year, a jury found PC Richard Williams, then 43, not guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm and a second charge of intentional strangulation. This followed a seven-day trial in Caernarfon.

He justified his actions during the incident in Porthmadog on May 10 2023, saying he was protecting a female PC who he said had been assaulted by the person he was arresting.

The constable of 21 years will now face a misconduct hearing at Police Headquarters in Colwyn Bay on Monday.

Nick Lodolo Explains What Went Wrong in Reds Loss to Dodgers

Nick Lodolo needed 97 pitches to get 14 outs at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, and by the time he handed the ball over in the fifth inning the Cincinnati Reds were behind for good in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The left-hander walked three, hit two batters and gave up five hits in 4.2 innings, and he did not look for anyone else to blame.

"Too many free passes on my part. That's what led to the runs outside of the good hit by Smith in the first. Overall, got to limit the free passes," Lodolo told MLB.com.

Nick Lodolo fights command in loss to Dodgers

Nick Lodolo allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 4 2/3 innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Lodolo has struggled to miss opposing bats of late, allowing three earned runs or more in four of his last six contests. The left-hander remains another disappointing arm in the Reds rotation to this point, posting a 5.12 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with a 3-4 record and .883 OPS allowed through 18 starts.

One Nation has come under fire for quietly shelving support for a new domestic gas reservation policy in preference for a policy that favours the party’s billionaire patron, Gina Rinehart.

The Albanese government has announced it will establish a new reservation policy for Australia’s east coast, requiring gas exporters to supply a portion of the gas they produce to the domestic market. The policy is aimed at “modestly” supplying the domestic market to put downward pressure on prices for consumers.

Pauline Hanson moved a Senate motion as recently as March in support of a domestic gas reserve, saying it would “increase the supply of gas and lower the price of electricity directly”.

Transport minister accepts lifetime membership to Qantas platinum

Transport Minister Catherine King has accepted a lifetime membership to Qantas’ platinum frequent flyer rewards tier less than two years after MPs ceremonially handed over their membership to the airline’s VIP lounge following public backlash.

The minister, whose responsibilities include aviation and the courting of airlines to make use of the new Western Sydney International Airport, quietly updated her register of interests on Monday to reflect the gift she received from the airline.

The airline’s second-highest tier, behind platinum one, offers free access to first and business class lounges across the globe, additional baggage allowance, priority check-in, boarding and baggage access. It also offers priority upgrades and seat selection.
