Jetstar passenger plane and van nearly collide on airport tarmac

The ATSB is investigating a near-collision between a Jetstar plane carrying passengers and a ground vehicle at Townsville Airport last week. (Supplied)

A near miss between a Jetstar flight and a vehicle on the tarmac is being investigated by authorities after a series of incidents at a north Queensland airport.

The Airbus A320 was approaching Townsville Airport from Brisbane on October 7 when the pilots noticed a white van near the edge of the runway.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is investigating the near miss, which it has labelled a "serious incident".

In a statement, Jetstar said the flight landed normally and without incident.

'Near miss' between Jetstar plane and van on airport runway

An investigation is underway after a “near miss” between a Jetstar passenger jet and a van at Townsville Airport.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said it opened an investigation after the incident involving Jetstar Airbus A320 VH-VGQ and a ground vehicle in Queensland on October 7.

According to the ATSB, the flight crew observed a white van entering runway 01 while the aircraft was on approach.

“The vehicle was stopped at the outer edge of the runway as the aircraft passed at approximately 50ft [15m] above ground level,” the ATSB said in its report.

“The aircraft subsequently landed and the vehicle resumed crossing the runway.”

Tourist dies at popular Qld swimming spot

Emergency services were called to Millaa Millaa Falls, south-west of Cairns about 3pm on Monday.

The body of a Japanese tourist, 22, was recovered from the water about two hours later.

A young Japanese tourist has died at a popular waterfall and swimming spot in Far North Queensland.

Emergency services recovered the 22-year-old man's body from Millaa Millaa Falls about 5pm on Monday, two hours after they were called to the area, 100 kilometres south-west of Cairns.

Police said the man was with a group of people at the waterfall when he failed to resurface from the water.

‘Quite extraordinary’: Auction rate below 50pc for second week

The auction clearance rate has languished below 50 per cent for the second week in a row as listing volumes across the country track about a third lower than this time last year, even in the middle of the typically busy spring selling season.

Across the capital cities, the combined preliminary clearance rate was 48.8 per cent at the weekend, slightly higher than the 48.2 per cent recorded the week before, with 1781 homes going under the hammer – 31.2 per cent fewer than a year ago, according to Cotality research.

Carlton land Lachie Whitfield in major AFL trade with GWS Giants

Lachie Whitfield is now a Carlton player after GWS and the Blues completed a trade as the 2026 deadline approaches.

Whitfield has been traded alongside Picks 31 and 50 to Ikon Park, while the Giants pick up Picks 25, 26 and a 2028 third-round pick.

He has signed a three-year deal until the end of 2029, according to AFL Media.

GWS were adamant on improving its draft hand for 2026, and were hoping for one of Carlton's first-round selections.

One person has died and several others have been injured after an incident involving a roller coaster at the Six Flags theme park in Georgia.

A Six Flags spokesperson said park and local authorities responded immediately.

Detectives from the Cobb County Police Department's major crimes unit will investigate.

Georgia, USA: One person has died and several others were injured in an incident involving a roller coaster in Georgia, according to police.

The tragedy occurred on Monday afternoon (US time) on the Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park, about 25 kilometres north-west of Atlanta, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

Detectives with the department’s major crimes unit will investigate the incident.

Officials did not confirm how the person died or what caused the others to be injured.

Witnesses who spoke to NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta said they saw a man fall from the Goliath roller coaster, with at least two saying they saw him strike parts of the ride multiple times before hitting the ground.
