ROME — Two groups of pro-Palestinian activists were prevented by authorities from coming into contact with the opening stages of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics torch relay, Italian police said Saturday.

Both groups — one of them with about 15 people — were removed before they reached the relay route in Rome, police said.

A third group of about 10 people that was monitored by police waved Palestinian flags when the relay passed by the city's biggest university, La Sapienza.

There were also three people carrying signs in support of Venezuela near the American embassy.

The Ashes: Ollie Pope is just not good enough and England butchered chance to move on from him

A No 3 batsman is arguably the most significant in Test cricket, a role for which Pope is conspicuously under-qualified

Little illustrates Ollie Pope’s state of panic against Australia quite like the fact his Ashes batting displays, as England’s No 3, are significantly worse than those of his opponents’ leading strike bowler. Where Pope’s average in these duels is 18.71, Mitchell Starc’s is 25.48. Could there be a more damning indictment of his habit of shrivelling under pressure, or of this team’s misplaced trust in persisting with him in the top order? “Just a player” was the verdict here in Brisbane of Mark Waugh, who did not even bother to add an adjective. “He’s their weakness.”

Nothing was more telling about Jake Weatherald’s third Test innings than how, in partnership with Travis Head on a steamy and noisy Gabba afternoon in the second Ashes Test, the junior man could easily have passed for the senior partner.

Where Head took the leading role in Perth to gallop home in pursuit of 205 to win, now Weatherald showed a method both fearless and decisive, to ensure that England were unable to replicate the success of Mitchell Starc on day one.

Ball rolled into pitch forces WBBL match to be called off

Bizarrre scenes in Adelaide during the innings break in the Strikers-Hurricanes clash saw the match abandoned, a result that keeps alive the Strikers' finals hopes

A ball that was inadvertently rolled into the Karen Rolton Oval pitch during the innings break forced the WBBL|11 match between Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes to be abandoned on Friday night.

Umpires were left with little choice to abandon the match after the ball created a "hole" in the surface. It's understood an errant throw during the Strikers' warm-up to take the field saw the ball get lodged under the roller.

"As a result, the pitch conditions were changed significantly," a Cricket Australia statement read.

The WBBL has had to abandon a key game after a ball was accidentally ground into the pitch by the roller during a change of innings, leaving a hole.

The Adelaide Strikers – Hobart Hurricanes game at Karen Rolton Oval was abandoned before the Hurricanes' chase of 168, with the WBBL saying that the hole changed pitch conditions 'significantly'.

There are three games left before the finals, beginning with Melbourne Stars – Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers – Brisbane Heat on Saturday.

The signs are promising that Marnus Labuschagne has announced himself as a mainstay of the Australian top order once again, as he cemented his reputation as the world’s most formidable batsman against the pink ball.

But the Queenslander’s hunt for an elusive century remains, in what will be the greatest indicator of whether the Labuschagne of old is truly back.

Marnus Labuschagne saves hosts from penalty as Aussies punish England after 'costly' mistake

England have already let themselves down in the field in the opening session of Australia's innings after Marnus Labuschagne helped save the hosts from an ICC penalty after a moment of magic. Australia were searching for a quick wicket to start day two of the second Ashes Test after their slow over-rate saw them complete 74 overs on day one in Brisbane.

Australia were facing fines and the prospect of being docked a point in the World Test Championship for every over they're short of the minimum. The penalties only apply if the opposition team bats at least 80 overs in their innings – and this was Australia's saving grace after some magic from Brendan Doggett and Labuschagne.

Ryan Rollins shines defensively in loss

Ryan Rollins made his presence felt on both ends of the floor during Friday's loss to the 76ers, racking up four steals while dishing out seven assists. He chipped in 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, and added six rebounds.

The fourth-year guard continues to demonstrate that he can maintain his production alongside the recently returned Kevin Porter Jr. The duo is co-existing effectively in the starting backcourt, alleviating concerns that Rollins' role might diminish with Porter Jr. back in the lineup.

Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo drops unprecedented truth bomb on breakout star

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo had high praise for teammate Ryan Rollins amid his hot start to the year.

The Milwaukee Bucks have been on the struggle bus of late, having lost seven games in a row before finally getting back in the win column on Saturday night with a victory over the lowly Brooklyn Nets. Giannis Antetokounmpo is back after a brief injury absence, and the hope is that Milwaukee will be able to start stacking some wins with its best player back on the floor.

The most surprising (in a good way) player for the Bucks this year has been young guard Ryan Rollins, who has quickly raced to the forefront of the Most Improved Player discussion.

Resuming 43 runs behind with four wickets in hand, England lost the Test in that dramatic final hour last night, ending up at six wickets down.

The fortunes of the Hawks and Nuggets seemed to reverse on Friday night in the first and fourth quarters. After making six of their first seven 3s in the first quarter, the Hawks couldn’t buy a bucket in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, the rim opened up for the Nuggets and the Hawks couldn’t stop them. They fell 134-133 at State Farm Arena.

NBA Fans In Disbelief As Jalen Johnson Drops 2nd Fastest Triple-Double In NBA History

Jalen Johnson just hit the second-quickest triple-double in NBA history after dropping 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists in just 16 minutes and 35 seconds of playing time. Coincidentally, he had this performance against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets, in the Hawks’ 133-134 loss in Atlanta.

Jokic holds the record for the quickest triple-double in NBA history after he recorded 30 points, 17 assists, and 15 rebounds against the Bucks in just 14 minutes and 33 seconds in 2018. Johnson finished tonight’s game with 21 points, 18 rebounds, 16 assists, and two steals while shooting 9-of-20 from the field (45%) as the Hawks there away a 23-point lead down the stretch.

NBA fans saw this coincidence on social media and expressed their opinions on how well Johnson has been playing recently.

Hawks Star Forward Enjoying Breakout Shooting Season

The Atlanta Hawks brought in Kristaps Porziņģis this past summer for his rim protection and 3-point shooting. His long-range marksmanship pairs perfectly with Jalen Johnson, as he wants to attack the rim whenever he can. However, Porziņģis played in only 12 of the Hawks’ first 23 games of the season due to multiple illnesses and resting on back-to-backs. The Hawks missed a big part of their 3-point offense, but Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu’s career-best shooting campaigns helped the team stay afloat with Porziņģis sidelined.

Many people had high expectations for Johnson entering his fifth NBA season. His combination of size, athleticism, handle, rebounding, playmaking, and strong inside finishing makes him a matchup nightmare for opposing teams. However, questions surrounded his ability to create his own shot in the halfcourt and become a consistent 3-point threat. Through the Hawks’ first 23 games, Johnson answered these questions without hesitation.
