Josh Frydenberg on politics, COVID-19 and antisemitism

As Australia’s former treasurer, Josh Frydenberg is best known for helping steer the country through COVID-19.

At the time, he was widely tipped as the next Prime Minister, but his political career was abruptly sidelined when voters turfed the Liberals out of power in 2022.

Now with public support for the party tanking and a new memoir about to hit the shelves, speculation is rife that Frydenberg is preparing for another tilt at the top job.

Tracy Grimshaw sits down with the former deputy leader to find out.

Monique Ryan says Frydenberg focused on the past, amid accusations of a ‘toxic’ campaign

Independent MP Monique Ryan has dismissed former Liberal treasurer Josh Frydenberg as focusing on the past after his election defeat four years ago, while avoiding addressing his claim that her supporters personally abused him during the 2022 election campaign.

Liberal frontbenchers are backing Frydenberg for a potential rematch with Ryan in the affluent inner-Melbourne seat of Kooyong, with the upcoming launch of his book, A Grateful Son, feeding speculation he is paving the way for another tilt.

Frydenberg has accused Ryan’s camp of dialling the personal vitriol “up to 11” despite promising to reform standards in the 2022 contest, in which the independent seized the seat as part of a broader teal wave. The defeat scuppered Frydenberg’s political future, which his colleagues thought as treasurer could have included the Liberal leadership.

Australian television's forgotten history revealed in Channel 7 archives

As Channel 7 celebrates 70 years on air, a hunt through the archives has turned up extraordinary old footage exposing a long-forgotten story about the start of television in Australia.

Since 1956, Australians have been told the first face on Australian TV was Bruce Gyngell with his famous greeting: “Good evening and welcome to television.”

But decades earlier, silent movie star Janet Gaynor actually claimed the honour in 1934.

The discovery reveals Australia’s first TV station operated over 90 years ago, holding the first full television licence not only in Australia but also in the Southern Hemisphere.

70 years of Seven: Spotlight special commemorates seven decades of Australia’s most iconic television network

She’s an icon of Australian breakfast television and has reported across the world, but Nat Barr’s incredible career as a journalist and Sunrise presenter began in her parents’ living room in regional WA.

Nat, who was born and raised in Bunbury, spoke to The West Australian to commemorate the Seven Network’s 70th birthday on October 12.

“I grew up in regional WA, so everyone got the ABC and GWN, and then if you were really, really lucky and you hit the jackpot, you had an aerial (so) you got Channel Seven,” Barr recalled.

“Of course, we love GWN and the ABC, but we felt very lucky because we had an aerial and we got the Perth stations. We just felt we were Christmas.”

Across the two hours of 70 Years of Seven, viewers will be taken back through the memories that formed not just their lives but that of Australia with a star-studded anniversary special.

There was a time when no one in Australia didn’t know who Effie was. She had big hair, a big voice and a big attitude.

Zverev and Davidovich, the main protagonists of Sunday’s matches in Shanghai

A day of strong emotions will be experienced this Sunday, October 11, at the ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai 2026, with the third-round matches taking place in the upper part of the draw. There are beginning to be clashes among the seeded players, and media attention is focused on what Alexander Zverev can achieve, competing without the pressure of fighting for ranking goals and with the hope of adding what would be his first Masters 1000 of the season.

The German will face Quentin Halys in the first match of the night session, which starts at 12:00 PM in mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla. Subsequently, it will be Alejandro Davidovich's turn, the only Spanish player in action that day, who will measure forces against Frances Tiafoe in what is expected to be a significant test for the player from Málaga. He arrives with good momentum and hopes to achieve one of those victories that can act as a turning point in his career.

ATP Shanghai Day 5 Predictions Including Alexander Zverev vs Quentin Halys

ATP Shanghai is reaching the point where reputations count for less than what players can produce under pressure. Ben Shelton faces one of the tournament’s emerging French talents in Arthur Gea, while Hubert Hurkacz must deal with a home player who has already pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the week. Alexander Zverev and Frances Tiafoe also face tricky tests as the draw tightens. With a place in the last 16 on the line, there is little room for a slow start. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?

Martin O'Neill sacrifices Celtic star as strikeforce gets makeover for Motherwell – predicted XI

Martin O'Neill and Shaun Maloney with Camilo Duran (Image: SNS Group)

Martin O'Neill has spent the international break taking stock of Celtic's alarming slide.

The wily old fox has masterminded some of the most famous results in the Hoops' history. Now he needs to summon that old magic and devise a plan to drag the faltering Scottish champions back on track. First and foremost, the veteran gaffer must settle on a system – and stick to it – that gets his players firing again.

Celts are suffering an identity crisis, with murmurings from inside the dressing room suggesting some players are unconvinced by the message coming from the dugout. Cameron Carter-Vickers appeared to confirm as much when he claimed O'Neill's beleaguered squad has been reduced to playing without a script.

CELTIC GIVEN EXTRA FIR PARK INCENTIVE

CELTIC have been given an extra incentive to make sure they overcome Motherwell at Fir Park tomorrow afternoon.

Derek McInnes’ Ibrox side took over pole position in the Premiership after this afternoon’s 3-1 win against Kilmarnock in Govan gave them a one-point advantage.

If Martin O’Neill’s men required any additional motivation it was provided with this result in a game where the hosts led 3-0 at the interval after Killie had passed up three gilt-edged opportunities in the opening 45 minutes.

Bizarrely, Neil McCann’s side not only passed up a trio of excellent openings, they also failed to hit the target on every occasion with wayward finishes.
