‘Those memories are ours and no verdict changes that’: Manchester City fans’ views

While most supporters seem to want to get behind the club, some fear actions of the owners will divide fanbase

Nicola Schofield, City fan for more than 40 years: One of my (million) concerns, as someone who feels angry with the owners, is if the owners’ strategy causes a split in the fanbase. I think everyone wants to get behind the club and team, but this is different to the experience of a relegation of the type I experienced in the 90s. We all shared that, and we stood by the club down to League One and as we came back up. This threatens to be messier, with those who may want the owners out (which is its own minefield) to those who will back them all the way. I think ultimately all fans want to ensure our club still exists, but I do worry at divisions this could cause and that might be hard to heal.

‘With certain caveats’ – Why Man City & Co should be allowed to ‘spend what they want’ as FFP regulations prevent billionaire owners from splashing the cash

Manchester City remain wedged under the Financial Fair Play (FFP) microscope, but Danny Mills has told GOAL why – “with certain caveats” – billionaire owners in the Premier League should be allowed to “spend what they want”. The deepest of pockets can now be found in boardrooms across English football, so why are the super wealthy not able to splash the cash?

That question is dominating discussions once again, with City being stung with well over 100 charges for alleged breaches of FFP regulations. They could be hit with the most serious of punishments – ranging from top-flight expulsion to long-term transfer embargoes.

Anger, remorse, conspiracy theories: how sports fans cope when their club does wrong

Manchester City, one of the world’s biggest sporting clubs, has been found guilty by the English Premier League of 114 breaches of its financial rules. The amount in question is close to a staggering £1 billion (A$1.9 billion).

Dyed-in-the-wool fans are acutely sensitive to slights against their teams. So, when caught up in a major sport controversy, their response is often visceral.

Sport communication researchers describe a process of “moral uncoupling” through which those fans who identify most deeply with their team separate themselves from its most troubling transgressions when experiencing “collective shame”.

While some Manchester City fans say they accept there might have been wrongdoing and are “devastated”, “angry” and “sad”, many passionate supporters find forgiveness easily for their team while not extending this understanding to competitors.
