Trump unleashes as his Fed plan dealt a major blow

The US Supreme Court has preserved the independence of the Federal Reserve Board, for now, but by the narrowest of margins.

In a 5-4 decision, the court’s majority ruled that Fed governor Lisa Cook – whom Donald Trump had purported to sack on the basis of  allegations of mortgage fraud – could remain on the board until the allegations had been tested and Cook given the opportunity to defend herself.

The judgment – and a concurrent ruling that a president has complete authority over every other government agency – confirms the unique status of the US central bank, which Chief Justice John Roberts rightly described as one of America’s and the world’s most important financial institutions.

Outcry over supreme court decision to grant Trump power to fire agency chiefs

Legal and labor experts say Trump v Slaughter decision upends settled constitutional law in favor of ‘loyalty test’

As a reality TV show host, Donald Trump rose to fame with the catchphrase: “You’re fired!”. On Monday, the US supreme court handed him – and all future presidents – the power to fire leaders of independent agencies or commissions, overturning 90 years of court precedent curbing executive power.

While Trump celebrated the decision on Truth Social as a “big win”, labor advocates, unions, and consumer advocacy groups criticized the supreme court decision on the case, Trump v Slaughter, and warned of the long-term impacts for democracy in the US. Rebecca Slaughter, the Federal Trade Commissioner fired last March, said she was “profoundly disappointed about today’s decision” during a press call.

Federal Reserve independence secures an important, but not final, victory at US Supreme Court

The Federal Reserve, under pressure from President Donald Trump to cut interest rates and bend to his will, just got an important assist from the U.S. Supreme Court.

In Trump v. Cook, the justices took up the case involving Trump’s decision to terminate Lisa Cook, a member of the powerful policymaking Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. On June 29, 2026, Cook and the Fed prevailed. In a 5-4 opinion written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the court upheld a lower court’s decision to keep Cook in her role while her case proceeds on whether she was terminated “for cause.”

Crysencio Summerville Wears Classic Nike Mercurial Superfly 6 'Always Forward' Boots at 2026 World Cup

During the 2026 World Cup match between the Netherlands and Morocco in Monterrey, Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville caught the attention of boot enthusiasts by lacing up in a classic pair of Nike Mercurial cleats. Instead of opting for Nike's latest tournament pack, Summerville chose to wear the Nike Mercurial Superfly 6 from the 'Always Forward' collection.

Originally released in October 2018, the 'Always Forward' Nike Mercurial Superfly 6 features a striking Racer Blue, Metallic Silver, and Black colorway. It is rare to see professional players, especially at a major international tournament, wearing models that are nearly eight years old.

What Crysencio Summerville could offer Manchester United or Aston Villa

In-demand Crysencio Summerville is playing for the Netherlands at the World Cup finals Stefan Koops/Getty Images

Before last month, Crysencio Summerville had never been called up by the Netherlands’ senior squad.

Now, he has starred for the Dutch attack as they won Group F at the ongoing World Cup finals, setting up a round of 32 tie against Morocco later today (Monday).

It is some step up — and Premier League teams will be assessing if he is ready to rise to the challenge at club level, too.

Following West Ham United’s relegation to the Championship, a move away for Summerville would raise funds and allow the 24-year-old, who was one of the team’s brighter sparks in a dismal season, to continue playing top-flight football.

Arsenal target told he 'won't score many goals' for Mikel Arteta if he seals £50m move

Ruud Gullit has warned Crysencio Summerville he ‘won’t be scoring many goals’ if he joins Arsenal.

Summerville is expected to leave West Ham United this summer after their relegation from the Premier League with his stock rising further after a string of impressive performances for Netherlands at the World Cup.

Manchester United are interested in the former Leeds United star as they look to bring in a left-sided attacker to bolster their attack ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

West Ham are looking for a fee of £50million for the 24-year-old, having paid half that for his services two years ago.

From Cape Verde to drinks breaks: The World Cup group stage's surprises and stinkers

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

The 2026 World Cup's group stage has come to an end, and it didn't disappoint, producing stunning moments, record-breaking feats and heartbreaking exits.

The group stage started with a wild match between Mexico and South Africa — which saw three red cards — and ended with a dramatic draw between Austria and Algeria, ending Iran's geopolitically tinged presence in the partly-US-hosted tournament.

In between, the group stage delivered many memorable moments, from unexpected qualifications to superstars coming through with the goods. It also saw a new record set for the most goals scored in any World Cup group stage.

World Cup 2026 power rankings: France still kings but who has climbed 26 places?

From Algeria to Uzbekistan, we assess the standing of the 48 nations after the group stage of the tournament

It took a little over an hour for Kylian Mbappé to find his groove. Irked by a poor refereeing decision, he scored twice in France’s opener against Senegal. Ably supported by a stunning cast, Mbappé will already have his sights on winning the competition. Michael Olise has shown his class throughout, while Ousmane Dembélé dazzled with a hat-trick against Norway. We’ll see if anyone can stop Didier Deschamps’ team.

Lionel Messi turned 39 this week but there is little indication he is slowing down. A missed penalty against Austria was the only blemish on his Group J record and, to be fair, he scored twice in that match, adding to his hat-trick against Algeria as he became the World Cup’s record goalscorer. Argentina’s success will hinge on their captain, which may explain why he was allowed a breather in the final group match – although he still came off the bench to score his sixth goal in the group stage.

An employee at one of the big four accounting firms has been sacked after he and another man allegedly accessed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's personal banking account.

The men, aged 21 and 25, faced court on Tuesday over the breach which Australian Federal Police alleged occurred when the EY graduate was on secondment at the Commonwealth Bank.

Paul Issa, 21, was charged with accessing restricted data without authorisation, as well as distributing personal data.

EY sacks grads for accessing CBA account details, including PMs

Two Ernst and Young graduate employees who were on secondment at Commonwealth Bank of Australia have been sacked and one has been charged after he allegedly used the bank’s systems to access the personal banking details of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

In March, EY welcomed a new cohort of graduates, and in the months after, dozens of junior staff, including some of the new graduates, were deployed to Australia’s largest bank to consult on its technology systems.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that two former EY graduate employees were charged. Only one former EY employee is facing a criminal charge.

How Hyundai Is Using the World Cup to Redefine What a Car Brand Can Be

“Next Starts Now” bridges Hyundai’s mobility vision with next-gen football talent — how did you land on that conceptual thread, and how early did the FIFA partnership shape the creative direction?

From the start, we saw FIFA as much more than a sponsorship. It was an opportunity to show where Hyundai is headed as a brand. ‘Next Starts Now’ came from the idea that the future isn’t some far-off concept — it’s already happening through technology, mobility, and the next generation shaping culture today. Football felt like the most natural way to bring that to life.

How does this campaign fit into Hyundai’s longer-term brand positioning beyond the World Cup window?

Live: Germany fumes as VAR shocker denies extra-time goal, Brazil breaks Japan hearts

Brazil's Gabriel Martinelli scores in the 96th minute to break Japanese hearts and secure a 2-1 Round of 32 win for the Seleção.

And it's in! Hard to the left and Manuel Neuer can't do anything about it.

Havertz made Orlando Gil wait for an age, but it doesn't matter.

The Paraguayan goalkeeper is down to his left and making a big, big save.

The South Americans stand tall, stay resolute and fight hard to stay alive in extra time.

Germany will still be stinging from that disallowed goal, but they need to put that behind them now.

Manuel Neuer, after a shaky start to his final tournament, with a golden opportunity for some more World Cup magic.

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli has scored an added-time winner as Brazil snatched a place in the last 16 of the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Japan in Houston.

Carlo Ancelotti's side were stunned when Japan took the lead with a superb strike from Kaishu Sano after 29 minutes, but replied when Casemiro atoned for a poor first-half performance with a fine header.

Brazil into last 16 as Martinelli strikes in stoppage time to break Japan hearts

Not for the first time in this tournament, there were long periods when Brazil did not impress. And not for the first time in this tournament, they got away with it. It may be inexplicable but the Carlo Ancelotti method that worked at Real Madrid is working again: stay in games and eventually either opponents will make a mistake or brilliant players will do something brilliant.

Brazil were 1-0 down at half-time and struggling. Their earliest exit form a World Cup seemed entirely possible. Five players in the Brazil starting lineup were aged over 30, five of the six defensive players – and they looked it. Japan were quicker, slicker, sharper and more imaginative. But the introduction of Endrick and a change of shape and approach at half-time changed everything. Brazil started slinging crosses into the box and Japan wobbled. Casemiro, barely a pedestrian in the first half, headed the equaliser and, deep into stoppage time, Gabriel Martinelli squeezed in the winner.

    Warriors To Re-Sign Kristaps Porzingis

Kristaps Porzingis will return to the Warriors on a two-year, $40MM contract, agent Jeff Schwartz tells Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link). The deal will feature a player option on the second year.

It’s a pretty significant pay cut for the Latvian big man, who has made between $27-36MM each of the past seven seasons. But there’s a reason he accepted less money — his availability has been very limited over the past two years, appearing in just 42 and 32 games, respectively.

Porzingis, who battled a series of injuries earlier in his career, and has dealt with an illness – diagnosed as POTS – for the past season and a half. He was still highly effective last season when he played — the Warriors were 6.4 points per 100 possessions better when he was on the court, and that number was even higher (7.8 points per 100 possessions) during his time with Atlanta. But again, he only played 32 games.

Now, it’s Paraguay’s turn to take their first shot.

It’s Mauricio who sends it into the bottom-right corner and past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to give his team the lead.

Germany is up and goalscorer Kai Havertz will open for them.

Germany will start the penalty shootout as Orlando Gill walks to the goal.

There’s confusion as Junior Alonso fouls Jamal Musiala but also gets his foot stepped on in the process. Germany win the free kick but Alonso stays down for a while. It’s certainly getting fiery between both teams as the clock winds down, especially on this side of the pitch. Not long after winning a free kick, Musiala concedes one for a foul on Galarza, which he receives a yellow card for, too.
