Canadian Grand Prix 2026: Max Verstappen says engine rule changes for 2027 'very positive'

Max Verstappen took part in the Nurburgring 24 Hours in the break between the Miami Grand Prix and Canada

Max Verstappen said planned changes to Formula 1's engine rules for next year would return racing "almost back to normal" and hinted he would stay in the sport as a result.

Verstappen said after the Japanese Grand Prix that he was considering his future because of what he sees as the damaging effect of this year's new engines on the experience of driving an F1 car.

F1 bosses are working on a package of changes that move away from the nominal 50-50 split between internal combustion and electrical power to reduce the need for energy management, which has dominated racing this year.

F1's 2027 engine plan in jeopardy

Formula 1 is set for crunch rules talks in Canada this weekend, The Race has learned, with hardware changes tabled for 2027 not having the support that will be needed to go through. With the fate of the heralded 60/40 power split move hanging in the balance, discussions are planned to see if common ground can be found among manufacturers.Following a meeting between F1, the FIA, plus teams and manufacturers after the Miami Grand Prix, it was agreed in principle for there to be a move away next year from the 50/50 electrical and internal combustion power split that is a central pillar of the current regulations.

2025 Canadian GP: See the Norris/Piastri clash in full – plus their post race reactions

What we learned from day one of F1's Canadian GP

After a three-week gap post Miami, there was plenty for the Formula 1 paddock to reveal on the first day of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Williams started the Canada weekend announcing the signing of several new recruits from teams across the grid – including someone you might not be super familiar with, but who has cropped up in The Race’s McLaren coverage from time to time. With good reason.

As chief operating officer, Piers Thynne was a serious leader at McLaren. He was promoted into the COO role with expanded responsibilities as part of the early Andrea Stella technical reshuffle that ousted James Key in early 2023, and has spent years running the production side (among doing other things) at McLaren.

NOAA's 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast: What you need to know

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Thursday issued its official outlook for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1 and lasts until Nov. 30.

Forecasters are predicting a below-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic basin, which comprises the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

There’s roughly a 55% chance the season will be below normal, a 35% chance of a near-normal season and a 10% chance of an above-normal season, according to the outlook.

NOAA is forecasting a range of eight to 14 total named storms. The federal weather agency assigns a name to a storm when it officially becomes a tropical storm, when its maximum sustained winds reach at least 39 mph. Out of those named storms, three to six are forecast to become hurricanes (maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph or higher), including one to three major hurricanes (considered Category 3, 4 or 5).

NOAA reveals 2026 Atlantic hurricane season activity forecast as Super El Niño looms

FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross joins us to talk about the NOAA hurricane season outlook released on Thursday. The agency predicts a below-average season in the Atlantic, with 8-14 named storms, 3-6 hurricanes and 1-3 Category 3+ hurricanes. Norcross talks about how El Niño plays into this outlook.

NOAA released its official 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast Thursday, predicting a below-average season with 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, which include 1 to 3 major (Category 3+) storms this year.

This satellite image shows Hurricane Melissa south of Jamaica on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025.

In comparison, an average Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, including 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

The next era of Atlantic hurricanes could be far more destructive

Wild year-to-year swings — from punishing hyperactive seasons to quiet years with little activity — could well become the norm for future Atlantic hurricane seasons, according to recent climate change research.

The latest science paints a complex but alarming future, as the unprecedented amount of heat that humans are supplying to the climate system disrupts the fundamental atmospheric circulation pattern in which we designed our civilization.

During the coming busy seasons, death and destruction from unprecedented hurricane catastrophes will probably grow much more commonplace, because even as risks grow, people have continued to build in risky flood-prone regions. But eventually, the coming hurricane catastrophes will pose an increasing threat to the viability of living in many coastal areas, particularly in the Caribbean.

Google I/O primer: Alphabet's AI showcase is its chance to wow Wall Street

Alphabet's stock is up 140% over the past year, with a cloud business that is growing faster than Amazon's and Microsoft's.

But 18 months ago, the Google parent looked like it had spent a decade preparing for the artificial intelligence era, only to watch OpenAI define the market.

Now, Wall Street is valuing Alphabet like one of the few companies positioned to profit from every layer of the generative AI boom.

Google I/O, which begins Tuesday, has always been its venue for showing developers where the company is headed. This year, the stakes are higher.

Wall Street has already rewarded Alphabet for its AI comeback, but investors want to see whether that confidence is backed by a real product roadmap across key areas like search, cloud, Android, chips and enterprise software.

Former Kiwis captain Benji Marshall has revealed why he retired from playing in the NRL and how his former coach, Wayne Bennett, was a key factor in the decision.

The current Wests Tigers coach said he planned to join the Gold Coast Titans on a two-year deal after he played
in the 2021 NRL Grand final with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but told Sky Sport’s League Lounge with Shaun Johnson that Bennett helped to change his mind.

“I actually wasn’t going to retire when I retired,” Marshall told the broadcaster.

“I had literally agreed verbally to go to the Gold Coast for two more years to keep playing.”

Playoff Power Rankings: How the 4 conference finalists stack up

The conference finals are here and 4 teams are still alive. How do they stack up with an NBA Finals berth 4 wins away?

OKC runs its postseason record to 8-0 by completing the sweep against the Lakers and punching its ticket to the West Finals.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are the eighth team to sweep through the first two rounds of the playoffs since the first round went to a best-of-seven format in 2003 (24 years). The New York Knicks, meanwhile, have outscored their opponents by 19.4 points per game, the best differential for any team through two rounds since the playoffs went to a 16-team format in 1984.

From The Sports Desk: The NBA’s Final Four is here

The Cleveland Cavaliers shocked the basketball world Sunday with a 31-point road win in Game 7 to advance past the Detroit Pistons and into the Eastern Conference Finals. There they’ll meet the red-hot New York Knicks, who have not lost in the postseason since May.

In the West, the Victor Wembanyama-led San Antonio Spurs will face the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder in a matchup of the top two teams in the league. That series starts tonight and will be streamed on Peacock.
