Crystal Palace's World Cup involvement continues

As the World Cup continues and the Round of 16 is played out, Crystal Palace’s involvement in the tournament continues, as it looks evermore likely that a World Cup winner will be returning to South London later this month.

If Colombia beat Switzerland later tonight, there will be eight Palace players in the Quarter finals, across six of the eight sides competing in the next round.

That gives the South London club a 75% chance of having a World Cup winner in their squad, but taking into account the quality of the sides it’s more like a 60%-80% chance depending on qualification.

Pierre Sage forced to wait as Jean-Philippe Mateta reaches World Cup semi-finals with France

Jean-Philippe Mateta came on for Kylian Mbappe as France beat Morocco 2-0 to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

The Crystal Palace striker replaced France’s captain late in the quarter-final win, giving him another appearance on the biggest stage.

France advanced through second-half goals from Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele, with The Guardian’s live report confirming their place in the last four.

For Mateta, the cameo adds another useful line to a strong international summer. For Palace, it means Pierre Sage must keep waiting for one of his key forwards.

Crystal Palace’s World Cup involvement continued this week as the Round of 32 was played out.

Palace went into the World Cup with 13 players featuring, the sixth most of any club across the entire globe, and still lead the charts for most goals scored from a Premier League club at the tournament.

There were goals, penalty drama and big underdog wins, and it all started with Daichi Kamada and Japan.

The second knockout game of the tournament saw Japan face a Brazilian side under huge pressure after an underwhelming group stage. Japan had been fantastic in the group stage, and Daichi Kamada scored twice as they finished second.

Audience of 9.1 million watch 2am BST kick-off live and on iPlayer with 48m requests for digital content on Monday

Englandâs triumph over Mexico in the World Cup attracted a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer despite kicking off at 2am BST â the biggest television audience ever for a live UK broadcast at that hour.

The dramatic 3-2 win drove the biggest day ever recorded for BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app and for BBC Sportâs social video views, the broadcaster said.

The round-of-16 victory, in which Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane fired home a penalty, also delivered record-breaking audiences across BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with supporters staying up into the early hours or catching up on the drama later that morning.

Kane interview stuns viewers as England celebrations take toll

Harry Kane was lost for words after England survived an almighty scare in one of the most chaotic FIFA World Cup matches in history, capping off a dramatic day of action that also saw Brazil sent packing by Norway in a major Round of 16 upset.

After lengthy weather delays, the game was blown wide-open late in the first half when Jude Bellingham scored two goals in as many minutes, before Julian Quinones hit back for the host nation before the break.

Pure chaos erupted early in the second stanza when Jarell Quansah was sent off for England after flying in over the ball with his studs showing – yet moments later, it was England who took a 3-1 lead after skipper Harry Kane buried a penalty.

World Cup 2026: England's Jordan Henderson injures wrist in celebrations

England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a "really bad" wrist injury while celebrating his side's dramatic World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, manager Thomas Tuchel said.

Henderson appeared to land awkwardly after falling from the advertising hoardings at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium following England's 3-2 victory and was pictured leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder's World Cup has been limited to a six-minute appearance at the end of England's Group L win over Panama.

"Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad," said England manager Thomas Tuchel on BBC One after his side's win on Monday.

Raul Jimenez converted a penalty to reduce England's lead to 3-2

England head coach Thomas Tuchel said referees at the World Cup "are just not good enough" after the dramatic last-16 win over Mexico.

The Three Lions were reduced to 10 men and also had a controversial penalty awarded against them in a thrilling game at the Azteca Stadium.

"It's just not good enough," Tuchel told BBC Sport. "The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That's the bottom line.

"Is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not. They overturned a situation where he doesn't even give a foul."

Germany parts ways with coach following disastrous exit

After their disappointing exit against Paraguay in the Round of 32 on Tuesday (AEST), Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has parted ways with the DFB.

It's been reported by German newspaper Bild that the 38-year-old has left his position after it was 'strongly encouraged' that he resigns.

The former Bayern Munich manager has been in charge of the national side since 2023.

Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has been linked to the position.

And with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, Switzerland are through to the Round of 16.

Klopp has reportedly accepted an offer to become the new head coach of Germany, ending his two-year hiatus from the dugout. The classic celebratory anthem is pumping out of the speakers, and the France players have gone over to their supporters jumping, dancing, and singing along to celebrate with them.

A very different scene to the polite applause they gave their fans after a much more routine win in the round of 32. They know the pressure is ramping up, and every match from here on in is going to be tougher than the last.

France superstar Kylian Mbappe was “whacked” off the ball by a Paraguay player in an incident that escaped punishment in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Mbappe and France were frustrated by Paraguay throughout the opening half in sweltering temperatures in Philadelphia on Sunday (AEST).

There was also an off-the ball incident that saw France’s all-time leading goalscorer Mbappe go to ground following an incident with Matias Galarza.

Galarza appeared to swipe out at Mbappe as the France captain ran forward to be part of an attacking move, however, the referee allowed play to continue, while VAR deemed no punishment was necessary.

Kylian Mbappé praised for rare act moments before France vs Paraguay

Mbappé led the line for France during their Round of 16 clash against Paraguay.

France forward Kylian Mbappé has been praised by supporters for what he did ahead of Les Bleus' World Cup round of 16 clash against Paraguay.

The two-time winners faced the South Americans at the sweltering Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday evening (July 4), with Didier Deschamps naming star men Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Mbappé in his starting XI.

The Europeans have impressed fans with their free-flowing attacking play throughout the tournament and have emerged as the outright favourites to lift the trophy after the final on July 19 in New York/New Jersey.
