    Cape Fear review – Amy Adams and Javier Bardem’s immaculate update is a wild, wild ride

    Bardem has the absolute time of his life terrifying everyone in this remake of the classic thriller. It’s a masterclass in tension, sublime directing – and never forgets the power of a jump scare

    “Ever look around and wonder if we deserve all this?” a woman asks, standing by their sprawling mansion’s swimming pool with her handsome, ripped, fellow lawyer husband.

    Ah me. Ah my. Welcome to the latest screen incarnation of John D MacDonald’s taut psychological thriller, published in 1957 as The Executioners and now adapted for the third time under the title Cape Fear. Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck starred in the first, in 1962 – the former as the villain Max Cady, nursing an incandescent rage and obsessive desire for vengeance against the latter, as lawyer Sam Bowden, for for his role as key witness in a rape prosecution. Martin Scorsese directed a remake that had Nick Nolte as Bowden and a truly terrifying Robert De Niro as Cady in 1991. It introduced a few more moral grey areas but the battle remained between good and very, very evil as Cady sought to destroy Bowden’s life and family in every conceivable way.

    Why Cape Fear is scarier than anything else I’ve seen on TV

    This series is so unsettling it makes its movie predecessors feel like Roadrunner cartoons.

    Hollywood’s cannibalisation of its back catalogue has spawned the good, the bad and the ugly. Residing in the first category is Cape Fear, Apple TV’s series from show-runner Nick Antosca, produced by master storytellers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. The reworking of Scorsese’s 1991 film (itself a revamp of J Lee Thompson’s 1962 classic), takes narrative licence, undergoes significant renovation and adds characters.

    It’s a highly satisfying deep-dive into characterisation and theme, heightening complexity well beyond Thompson’s stripped-back tale of good and evil and Scorsese’s brutal take on universal guilt. This version, with its oppressive paranoia, is so unsettling it makes its predecessors feel like Roadrunner cartoons.

    Wilfried Nancy insisted he did not fear the sack, claiming, “We are really close to things turning around,” despite the Celtic manager moving dangerously close to dismissal with a comprehensive defeat by Rangers.

    Celtic led their oldest rivals at the interval but a second-half capitulation from the hosts allowed Danny Röhl’s team to move level on points with the defending Scottish Premiership champions. Nancy, who was hired from Columbus Crew in December, has presided over six defeats in eight games.

    Celtic’s support displayed their anger – towards the board and manager – in their hundreds outside the stadium at full time. The board would be most likely to return to Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful interim spell before Nancy was hired, if the Frenchman were sacked.

    Rangers head coach Danny Rohl: "I give big respect to my team. In the first half, we tried something, but they were better. They won the 50-50 duels and they played big and fast and behind, it created us a lot of problems.

    "We changed at half-time a little bit the style of pressing. We are good in the game then.

    "You have two stories, we can turn things in one half to come back 3-1 and win this game and the second story, we have a centre-forward with Youssef [Chermiti] who scores fantastic goals.

    "We should enjoy, but tomorrow we have to be again, ready for the next game. This is a demanding league.

    Timothée Chalamet-Starring ‘Marty Supreme’ Sets A24 Presales Record As It Starts Limited Run Ahead Of Holiday Wide Release – Specialty Preview

    Presales for original drama Marty Supreme are the fastest in A24 history Deadline hears with more than 65 complete sellouts across hundreds of showtimes, and over 70% of tickets sold overall, setting the Timothée Chalamet-starring drama for rarefied numbers in limited release at six theaters.

    At 96% Certified Fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes and with a 91 Metacritic score, the film will go wide Christmas day on circa 2,500 screens.
