Amateur prospector finds $150,000 gold nugget in outback

While the nugget weighs 1,218 grams, testing shows it contains about 940 grams of gold.  (ABC Broken Hill: Kristina Rosengren)

A Broken Hill prospector has unearthed a gold nugget weighing more than a kilogram in outback NSW.

The nugget, nicknamed the "Tibooburra Spud" by the lucky prospector, is said to be worth about $150,000.

A business owner selling prospecting supplies says more people are becoming interested in the hobby.

Sounds of excitement fill the air as an amateur prospector digs his hands into red, rocky dirt.

What he comes up with is something he hopes isn't "a painted rock", but instead a gold nugget worth about $150,000.

Gold nugget worth up to $160,000 found in Australia — ABC News Australia

In Australia, an amateur prospector found a gold nugget at Mount Stuart Station near Tibooburra in New South Wales, valued at $150,000–160,000 at the spot price of gold. ABC News reported the discovery.

The prospector, who wished to remain anonymous, had been searching for gold in the area for several days. In mid-October, he was already preparing to end his search when a Gold Monster 2000 metal detector gave a weak signal. According to the man, after digging about 100 millimetres down, the device began giving a loud signal, and he saw a yellow speck in the centre of the hole.

The nugget, containing quartz inclusions, weighs more than 1.2 kilograms. Tests showed that about 940 grams of its mass is pure gold. The prospector named the find “Tibooburra Spud” and plans to sell it to a collector. In his view, its price could then rise to $200,000.

Drone LiDAR finds hidden rock shelters and rock art in Australia

Walking the Blue Mountains west of Sydney is hard work. Sandstone cliffs, thick eucalyptus forest and deep valleys hide many rock shelters, and crews on foot miss a lot of them. A University of Sydney team, working with the Dharug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation, tried a different approach. They used laser scans from the air plus a set of computer models to point the way. The study appears in Remote Sensing.

LiDAR fires laser pulses at the ground and times the return. Some pulses slip through gaps in the trees, so the data show the land under the canopy. The team tested two sources across a 1,057 square kilometer area. One was free, low-detail aircraft data from the New South Wales government, with at least 0.5 points per square meter. The other came from a drone flown at 75 meters, which gathered at least 100 points per square meter over four zones.

How high-tech drones reveal ancient Blue Mountains Indigenous sites

A drone shooting laser light beams that can “disappear” dense bush to reveal what lies beneath has located three new Aboriginal rock shelters within a minuscule part of the Greater Blue Mountains’ world heritage site’s 1.03 million hectares.

The discoveries by the University of Sydney’s digital archaeologist Dr Jacob Bongers have raised hopes that hundreds – maybe thousands – of ancient sites could be identified across the vast UNESCO site, which is about the same size as Lebanon.

The drone used light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology to create a 3D map of the terrain that is accurate down to centimetres. “What’s great about LiDAR’s lasers is that you can remove the tree canopy and see what’s underneath, allowing us to find shelters deep in the bush,” Bongers said.

Jury finds Facebook liable for deceiving users in Cambridge Analytica case

A New Mexico jury on Friday found Facebook liable for deceiving users about privacy protections on the social media platform.

It is now up to the judge to determine how much the company would pay, with attorneys representing the state asking for the maximum $5,000 penalty per violation.

The two-week trial in Santa Fe centered on accusations that Facebook deceived users about a data breach stemming from a third-party personality quiz that harvested data from roughly 87 million profiles and sold it to a political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, to generate targeted ads. The now-defunct firm's clients included the 2016 campaign for President Trump.

Warriors Sign Center Amid Frontcourt Uncertainty

The Golden State Warriors made a roster move Sunday, adding size to a frontcourt that has been stretched thin late in the season.

The Warriors are navigating multiple injuries in the frontcourt during the home stretch of the season and heading into the play-in.

A calf strain has limited veteran big man Al Horford, while Quinten Post is dealing with foot and ankle problems. Both will be out for at least one more week, per the Warriors PR account, leaving the Dubs searching for reliable depth up front.

It's reasonable for the Warriors to also plan for the long-term future, with Golden State potentially facing a significant offseason departure in that of future unrestricted free agent Kristaps Porzingis.
