The Bureau of Meteorology has declared that La Niña is underway in the Pacific Ocean. So, what does this mean for Australia’s weather this summer?

La Niña is one phase of a Pacific Ocean phenomenon called the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The other phases of ENSO are El Niño and neutral.

Bureau of Meteorology officially declares La Niña, Aussies warned 'get your home ready'

Nearly two months after La Niña was first declared in the United States, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has finally confirmed the wet weather system is underway in the Pacific Ocean.

Meteorologists confirmed this week that the weather event, which can bring above-average rainfall, but described the system as "relatively weak".

In a relief for many Australians, the Bureau expects La Niñato be "short-lived". In more good news, the Indian Ocean Dipole, which has brought wet weather to Australia, is expected to return to neutral in December.

Nonetheless, the NSW State Emergency Service issued a warning after widespread damage caused by storms across the state. Destructive 120 k/h winds caused significant damage to homes, powerlines and trees/

BoM drops long-range forecast promising extreme summer

After one of the wettest winters on record, The Bureau of Meteorology has revealed its long-range summer forecast — and it’s extreme.

BOM released a statement, predicting key trends of the weather leading up to Christmas and into next year.

“The summer forecast currently shows that rainfall is likely to be below average for large parts of Western Australia. Above, below or near-average rainfall are all possible outcomes for the south,” the statement said.

A key takeaway was that summer temperatures are going to be hotter than normal.

“Summer days and nights are likely to be warmer than usual throughout most of Western Australia,” BOM said.

However, the head coach is not taking anything for granted, despite 16th-place St Pauli travelling to Bavaria on an eight-game losing streak.

"It's good that we can show what we're up to three days later," Kompany said. "We never want to lose, we accept and don't like it.

Chaos on Qantas plane mid-flight as a 'disruptive' passenger is restrained and removed

A 'disruptive' passenger has been restrained and removed from a Qantas flight bound for Sydney.

Cabin crew on board flight QF654 from Perth requested assistance from Australian Federal Police ahead of touching down at Sydney Domestic Airport on Wednesday morning.

It's understood fellow passengers helped crews to restrain a man who was acting erratically during the five-hour flight.

An AFP spokesperson confirmed officers removed a passenger from the plane.

'More information will be provided at an appropriate time,' an AFP spokesman told Daily Mail.

The First Radio Signal From Comet 3I/Atlas Ends the Debate About Its Nature

More evidence has emerged to support the natural origin of comet 3I/Atlas. After several weeks of conspiracy theories, social media debates, and speculation on popular podcasts such as Joe Rogan's, this interstellar object is still a comet. The most recent confirmation came from an observatory in South Africa that detected the first radio signal from 3I/Atlas.

But how? A radio signal? That would have to confirm the object is technlogical in nature, wouldn't it? The thing is, this isn't a radio signal like a transmission emitted by a spacecraft. It's instead a radio frequency pattern detected by MeerKAT, a radio telescope composed of 64 antennas—each with a diameter of 13.5 meters—operated by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory. And what did it detect? "OH absorption was detected on the 1665 MHz and 1667 MHz lines," according to the researchers.

The Remarkable Large-Scale Structure of Anti-Tail and Tail Jets from 3I/ATLAS

Today, a magnificent large-scale image of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, was reported here by Frank Niebling and Michael Buchner. The stacked image combines a series of 5 exposures, each lasting 3 minutes, from two telescopes (TEC 140/f5 and ASI 6200MM) between 5:08–5:23 UT on November 9, 2025.

The image shows two anti-tail jets out to 10 arcminutes towards the Sun accompanied by a longer collimated jet, extending away from the Sun out to an angular separation of 30 arcminutes, roughly the diameter of the Sun or the Moon.

At the current distance of 3I/ATLAS from Earth, 326 million kilometers, these angular extents correspond to spatial sizes of 0.95 million kilometers for the sunward anti-tail jets and 2.85 million kilometers for the tail jet away from the Sun. This enormous spatial scale is three orders of magnitude larger than the scale of the glowing halo around 3I/ATLAS in the Hubble Space Telescope image from July 21, 2025 (reported here).
