Hugh Bonneville is at his best in this timely comedy (just don’t mention FIFA)

Fans of British comedy won’t need an introduction to Ian Fletcher. He first appeared in the mockumentary series Twenty Twelve as the “head of deliverance” at the London Olympics, a fancy title for fixer of PR and logistical nightmares. The character returned years later in the fabulous W1A, where Fletcher was “head of values” at the BBC. The show gleefully mocked the broadcaster and bureaucratic meddling with scenarios that mirrored real-world people and events.

Fletcher, as played by Hugh Bonneville, is an urbane though colourless public service manager who has somehow floated to the top. A result, perhaps, of his decent nature, his patience for fools and sincere belief in management slogans. Surrounding him was an ensemble of sharply drawn idiosyncratic characters, whose interactions were often as uncomfortable as they were sidesplitting funny.

ABC screens Twenty Twenty Six …even after it was accused of ripping off ABC’s The Games

Come on ABC…. you’re screening Twenty Twenty Six after its earlier seasons, Twenty Twelve were blatantly accused of ripping off your own ABC mockumentary The Games?

In case you missed it, Twenty Twenty Six sees Hugh Bonneville as former BBC head of values Ian Fletcher overseeing the biggest football event in the world: FIFA World Cup.

Sure it’s topical, but it’s a slap in the face to Games writers John Clarke and Ross Stevenson.

In 2011 they confirmed Kath and Kim producer Rick McKenna pitched a British version of their show to Twenty Twelve’s producer Jon Plowman five years earlier when he was head of comedy at the BBC. DVDs of the show were also given to writer John Morton (Twenty Twelve).

Alex de Minaur had a walkover. His next opponent had full body cramps and collapsed in agony

Paris: Alex de Minaur’s charmed life at Roland-Garros continues after Jakub Mensik, his next opponent, collapsed on court in the extreme heat and ended up being taken to the medical room in a wheelchair.

While de Minaur enjoyed a walkover on Wednesday after his second-round opponent Alexander Blockx was injured in practice, his potential third-round adversaries had to slog it out in what Mensik described as “insane conditions” for four hours 41 minutes.

The Czech 26th seed ended up victorious but stricken on his back, unable to pick himself off the clay on Court No.6 for several minutes amid alarming scenes after battling to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (13-11) victory over Argentine Mariano Navone.

Addo-Carr learns his fate, MRC hand out fines and suspension

The MRC has handed down its latest round of charges following a Friday night dominated by controversy.

Despite debate over a try-saving tackle, Parramatta winger Josh Addo-Carr has been cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to his contact on Cowboys captain Tom Dearden.

Dearden suffered an ankle injury in the tackle, but Addo-Carr escaped any charge, with the MRC deeming the contact legal.

In the earlier Friday night fixture, Sydney Roosters forward Victor Radley has been charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle for his hit on Titans fullback AJ Brimson.

Radley faces a one-match suspension with an early guilty plea, or two matches if he contests the charge and is unsuccessful at the judiciary.

Victor Radley's judiciary luck has run out with the Sydney Roosters lock facing a one-game ban for a high tackle.

One week after avoiding any charges over three separate incidents against Brisbane, Radley was on Saturday sanctioned for a shot on AJ Brimson.

The grade-two charge means Radley will miss the Roosters' Magic Round clash with North Queensland with an early guilty plea, or risk a second game out if he fights it.

If this is play on, then the NRL need their heads read

I refer to the head-to-head “tackle” by Victor Radley on Pat Carrigan last Saturday. Radley, owner of a long and troubled past when it comes to dangerous tackles, launched himself like an Exocet missile at the Broncos skipper, head foremost. The top of Radley’s head connected flush with Carrigan’s jaw, and he went down like a sack of spuds.

Watching the slo-mo replay, Fox Sports commentator Warren Smith was struck dumb: “Here’s the tackle here, Victor Radley on Pat Carrigan … well that’s … that’s … well, it’s irrelevant now.”

He said that because – unbelievably – Radley had only been put on report for his trouble. But surely, having had a look at it, the bunker would step in? Nuh. As you were. Carry on camping. And so they did. The NRL Match Review Committee, then, the body that assesses on-field incidents after games and decides whether players should be charged or referred to the judiciary?

Walter lost his wife and daughters at Port Arthur. Thirty years on, this is his message

"Treasure every minute you've got with your family," Walter Mikac says. (ABC News: Glenn Mullane)

April 28 marks 30 years since a gunman killed 35 people at the Port Arthur Historic Site and surrounds.

The massacre led to the introduction of world-leading gun laws, including a civilian ban on automatic and semi-automatic firearms.

Last year's Bondi terror attack sparked a new wave of gun reforms, but a man who lost his family at Port Arthur has called some jurisdictions' response "pathetic".

Walter Mikac was in the darkest depths of grief, shock and anger.

As he flew from Hobart to Melbourne — where his loved ones were to be buried — he decided to pen a letter to the then Prime Minister John Howard.

For ex-police officer Gill Dayton, some memories are crystal clear and others remain blurry.

She was in her mid-20s, four years into her career, when called to the Port Arthur tourist site on April 28, 1996, to respond to Australia's worst mass shooting.

"My first recollection is sitting in the car park outside the Broad Arrow Cafe with my work partner," she says.

Thirty years after Port Arthur, we must defend the truth from cruel deniers

For many Tasmanians, Port Arthur will always be our "where were you when" memory.

A uni student living in Hobart, I was watching a soccer game when we heard the news on the radio and saw a helicopter fly overhead.

It was back at our residential college when we got a sense of how many lives those terrible events touched.

Frantic parents from around the country and overseas were ringing their kids' rooms. No one had mobiles back then.

If there was no answer, the calls came through to a common room, and if you were the closest, you picked up the phone.

'Wasting his time': Wayne Bennett's advice to Benji Marshall amid questions over sin bin

Benji Marshall is "wasting his time" calling for consistency from NRL referees according to veteran coach Wayne Bennett.

Following the Tigers' 33-14 win over Canberra on Thursday, Marshall called out "inconsistency" in the refereeing this season after Api Koroisau was cited for a hip drop tackle on Noah Martin, which led to a three-match suspension.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Bennett said the sin bin is "overused" while passing on some advice for the Tigers coach.

"I just realised what a hip drop is the other day, to be honest with you. Benji is a young coach so if he's a bit confused about the rules, wait until he gets another 10 years into the job," Bennett said.

Koroisau faces lengthy ban for hip-drop tackle in win over Raiders

Api Koroisau is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines after being charged with a grade two dangerous contact charge.

The Wests Tigers skipper was placed on report and sin-binned for a hip-drop tackle on Canberra back-rower Noah Martin during Thursday night’s 33-14 triumph at Leichhardt Oval.

Koroisau was then penalised and put on report a second time for a lifting tackle on Morgan Smithies in the 53rd minute.

Tigers coach Benji Marshall argued Koroisau had nowhere else to go when completing the tackle on Martin, and when it came to the lifting tackle on Smithies, said: “If it was up to me, I probably would have challenged it [the penalty]. I didn’t think it was that bad.”

His absence has sparked speculation, and here’s the latest on the Bayern star’s availability for the Real Madrid clash

Bayern Munich have been dealt a late fitness scare ahead of next Wednesday’s eagerly awaited Allianz Arena showdown with Real Madrid.

Last week at the Bernabéu, the Bavarians claimed a 2-1 first-leg win in the Champions League quarter-final.

On Saturday the Bavarians returned to Bundesliga duty and thrashed St Pauli 5-0, but they were again without German winger Serge Gnabry, sidelined by a knee problem.

His absence has sparked concerns over his availability for Wednesday’s return fixture.
