    April 28 marks 30 years since a gunman killed 35 people at the Port Arthur Historic Site and surrounds.

    The massacre led to the introduction of world-leading gun laws, including a civilian ban on automatic and semi-automatic firearms.

    Last year's Bondi terror attack sparked a new wave of gun reforms, but a man who lost his family at Port Arthur has called some jurisdictions' response "pathetic".

    Walter Mikac was in the darkest depths of grief, shock and anger.

    As he flew from Hobart to Melbourne — where his loved ones were to be buried — he decided to pen a letter to the then Prime Minister John Howard.

    For many Tasmanians, Port Arthur will always be our "where were you when" memory.

    A uni student living in Hobart, I was watching a soccer game when we heard the news on the radio and saw a helicopter fly overhead.

    It was back at our residential college when we got a sense of how many lives those terrible events touched.

    Frantic parents from around the country and overseas were ringing their kids' rooms. No one had mobiles back then.

    'Wasting his time': Wayne Bennett's advice to Benji Marshall amid questions over sin bin

    Benji Marshall is "wasting his time" calling for consistency from NRL referees according to veteran coach Wayne Bennett.

    Following the Tigers' 33-14 win over Canberra on Thursday, Marshall called out "inconsistency" in the refereeing this season after Api Koroisau was cited for a hip drop tackle on Noah Martin, which led to a three-match suspension.

    Speaking to reporters on Friday, Bennett said the sin bin is "overused" while passing on some advice for the Tigers coach.

    "I just realised what a hip drop is the other day, to be honest with you. Benji is a young coach so if he's a bit confused about the rules, wait until he gets another 10 years into the job," Bennett said.

    Koroisau faces lengthy ban for hip-drop tackle in win over Raiders

    Api Koroisau is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines after being charged with a grade two dangerous contact charge.

    The Wests Tigers skipper was placed on report and sin-binned for a hip-drop tackle on Canberra back-rower Noah Martin during Thursday night’s 33-14 triumph at Leichhardt Oval.

    Koroisau was then penalised and put on report a second time for a lifting tackle on Morgan Smithies in the 53rd minute.

    Tigers coach Benji Marshall argued Koroisau had nowhere else to go when completing the tackle on Martin, and when it came to the lifting tackle on Smithies, said: “If it was up to me, I probably would have challenged it [the penalty]. I didn’t think it was that bad.”

    Stuttgart ultras allegedly ambushed Munich ultras at their designated meeting point on Südkurvenplatz, sparking immediate confrontations. FCB supporters responded in kind: several hundred fans, some masked, charged the attackers. The situation quickly escalated into violent clashes.

    Several hundred police officers deployed to contain the violence; two were injured while trying to cordon off the VfB ultras. Order was eventually restored, and around 150 Stuttgart supporters were arrested. According to Bild, some had travelled to Munich solely to participate in the disturbances.

    Michael Chiesa will make the final walk of his career on Saturday, despite a belief he is still getting better at age 38. And a big reason for that is his late grandfather.

    Chiesa (19-7) will face Niko Price on the main card of UFC Fight Night in Seattle. Win or lose, Chiesa, who is currently on a three-fight win streak going back to August 2024, has said it will be his last appearance. The Washington native said he relishes the opportunity to finish his career at home, but also told ESPN his decision to walk away stems from his family's experience with his grandfather, local motorsports pioneer Darrell Triber.

    ‘I did it all from Spokane:’ UFC welterweight Michael Chiesa set to retire after fight on Saturday

    Representing Spokane for the last time, Michael Chiesa (19-7) will make his final walk to the octagon on Saturday.

    Niko Price (16-10) filled in at the last minute after Chiesa’s previous opponent withdrew due to visa issues.

    After a 12-week fight camp, the Shadle Park graduate was unfazed at the last-minute switch.

    “There (was) just something in my gut that was telling me that I was going to get an opponent change,” Chiesa said. “This is the most prepared I’ve ever been to fight anybody. … I really left no stone unturned in my preparation for this camp.”

    According to Chiesa’s strength and conditioning coach, Dr. Dylan Lemery, the welterweight recently set the all-time mid-thigh pull record at the UFC across all weight classes.

    You only need two words to explain why Jarome Luai played his best game yet for the Wests Tigers in last weekend’s thumping victory over North Queensland: Adam Doueihi.

    Before the start of pre-season, coach Benji Marshall told Doueihi he would be the starting No.7 this year. Not only was he more than capable of steering the team around the park, the 27-year-old’s control and experience would free up Luai to become the carefree, running five-eighth he was at Penrith.

    “When I started coaching here as an assistant, I said to Adam at the time, ‘You could be one of the biggest, hybrid No.7s going around’,” Marshall said this week.
