Rafael Nadal 'living in constant pain' and shares heartbreaking three-word message

It’s been almost two years since Rafael Nadal retired from professional tennis at the Davis Cup Finals, and the 22-time Grand Slam champion has now shed light on the “pain” he felt on a daily basis. Nadal was famously injury-prone compared to his two greatest rivals, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard was diagnosed with Muller-Weiss syndrome very early in his career, a degenerative bone disorder in his left foot. It troubled him throughout his playing years, while he also faced wrist, rib and hip injuries, among others.

Since ending his career in November 2024, Nadal has barely touched a racket. The former world No. 1 did get back out on the court at the recent Rafa Nadal Academy Slam, an exhibition event celebrating 10 years of his Mallorcan tennis centre. But the 40-year-old has admitted he now even forgets he was a tennis player, adding: “Life keeps going.”

Rafael Nadal reveals ‘only positive’ from his injuries and what is ‘difficult’ to find after retiring

Rafael Nadal has named the “only positive” that has come from his string of injuries during his playing career.

The Spaniard won a remarkable 22 Grand Slams, reached No 1 in the world, claimed a gold medal at the Olympics in both singles and doubles, and earned the moniker ‘The King of Clay’ as he dominated the red dirt surface in unprecedented ways.

However, the 40-year-old was struck down by severe knee tendinitis, iliopsoas tears in his hip, abdominal tears, rib fractures, and a congenital foot injury that nearly ended his career as a teenager.

The wear and tear of more than 20 years on the ATP Tour eventually took its toll, and Nadal was forced to retire at the age of 38 in 2024 following another hip injury.
