The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has entered its second hearing block, assessing the timeline and circumstances of the Bondi terror attack.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess has given evidence to the inquiry and defended counter-terrorism resourcing.

According to NSW Police figures, reports of hate crime incidents against Jewish people annually increased from 40 in 2020 to 841 in 2025.

Eleven people were shot within 29 seconds of the Bondi Beach terror attack starting, a royal commission into the massacre has heard.

The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has entered a critical phase, assessing the circumstances surrounding the terror attack at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025.

Antisemitism royal commission LIVE: Police, ASIO boss and Jewish security group members to give evidence

The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has resumed in Sydney for a second set of hearings, 10 days after the first block concluded with the lived experiences of Jews.

The commission is drilling into the security environment before alleged IS terrorists opened fire at the Chanukah By The Sea festival in December, killing 15 innocents.

Police and federal security agencies will be asked about the national threat level, security arrangements at the festival and the handling of intelligence allegedly linked to the shooters.

Among those to giving evidence today are the head of Australia’s spy agency, Mike Burgess, Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt and NSW Police Counter-Terror Commander Leanne McCusker.

Seven Saab Prototypes Left Behind at the Factory Are Headed to Auction

Our free daily newsletter sends the stories that really matter directly to you, every weekday.

How would you like to own a weird piece of automotive history? In a little over a week, the final 7 Saabs still remaining in the company’s former Trollhättan, Sweden, production facility are headed to auction. It’s a hodgepodge of pre-production cars hailing from as far back as 2014, and despite the brand’s recent semi-revival under the National Electrical Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) banner, some of them even run on old-fashioned gasoline.

There are actually eight cars up for auction later this month, but only seven of them are Saabs. Three of them are 9-3s from 2014; they’re pre-production examples that would have served as the prototypes for the gasoline cars that NEVS planned to sell to bridge the gap while it worked to bring its new electric models online.

The last Saabs are leaving the factory

The Swedish carmaker which was founded in 1949 and wound down production in the early 2010s is leaving its home, with a handful of its last cars headed to auction in Sweden.

Purchased by Chinese-Japanese parent company National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) in 2012 but unable to make a meaningful comeback, there were still a handful of Saabs being built in its final months as a functioning brand, though some which didn’t sell at the time can now be purchased.

Swedish auction house Klaravik has announced it is running the sale of seven Saab 9-3s from May 21 to 30, with all of the vehicles currently located at the Trollhättan factory they called home.

Antonelli left to rue another slow start in Miami Sprint as Wolff clarifies it ‘wasn’t at all his fault’

GHOST CAR: See how Antonelli beat Verstappen to pole for the Miami Grand Prix

Polesitter Antonelli hoping to maximise Miami GP start after falling short in the Sprint

It was an eventful Sprint race for Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes at the Miami International Autodrome.

Kimi Antonelli had to settle for sixth position in the Miami Grand Prix Sprint race after losing ground on the opening lap and later being hit with a penalty for a track limits violation.

Antonelli started Saturday’s 19-lap encounter from second on the grid but dropped to fourth at Turn 1, behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – and almost Mercedes team mate George Russell, who lined up sixth.

Antonelli’s latest slow start “wasn’t at all Kimi’s fault” – Wolff

Andrea Kimi Antonelli made another slow start in the Miami sprint race but team principal Toto Wolff said it wasn’t the driver’s fault.

Although the Miami circuit has one of the shorter runs to the first corner on the calendar, Antonelli still lost two places from his front-row start. However he does not believe he did anything wrong at the start.

“The start, to be fair, on procedure was all good,” said the Mercedes driver. “So we need to check what happened because the [clutch] drop was good.

“On my side, I think for once I did everything right. So it was a shame to, again, have a really bad start because then it just compromised the race.”

The four women who left 'Australia Street' to try and leave Syria

A group of Australian families left the Al Roj camp in Syria last week. (ABC News: Baderkhan Ahmad)

Four Australian women, their children and grandchildren are stuck in limbo in Syria after leaving a refugee camp housing family members of suspected Islamic State fighters.

Last week the group left the Al Roj camp in north-east Syria with the goal of heading to the capital, Damascus, and flying home to Australia.

But after Syrian authorities said they prevented the group from reaching the airport because of strong rhetoric from the Australian government, it is unclear what their next moves will be.

Albanese says Australia has nothing to do with Syrian moves to turn back ISIS families from airport

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has denied reports Australia blocked the return of ISIS-linked families from Syria, even though they had acquired passports and plane tickets, saying his government had no contact at all “with these people” and were not working with the Syrian government.

“My government is not engaged. We are not participants with the Syrian Government. These are people who are Australian citizens,” he told SBS News. “They are reports not through the Australian Government because we are not in contact with these people.”

Addressing a press conference alongside the prime minister earlier on Thursday, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said some in the cohort would be “weighing up” their decision to return, over fears they would be arrested upon landing in Australia.

Trump administration urges countries to help citizens stuck in Syria as Australia maintains hardline stance

Syrian officials say a group Australians ‘awaiting a solution’ as Albanese government refuses to repatriate them

The Trump administration says it is in “active communication” with countries, urging them to repatriate citizens stranded in Syria, while the Australian government maintains its hardline stance towards Australian women and children detained since the fall of Islamic State.

A group of four women, their nine children and grandchildren left al-Roj camp, in Syria’s north-east, last Friday in a bid to return to Australia, with reports on Thursday morning that the Albanese government’s refusal to help them has left them stuck in Damascus.

This time last year, Lachie Galvin was banished to the NSW Cup and ran out for the Western Suburbs Magpies instead of playing for Wests Tigers in the Easter Monday clash against Parramatta.

It was one of many low points in the recent history of the Wests Tigers. But it was also a time the Tigers finally stood for something – a time they came together, made it clear what they were going to accept, and went all-in on the senior playing group and coach Benji Marshall.

One year on, excitement is brewing in Tiger Town again. There will be a healthy sprinkling of black, white and orange in the stands at CommBank Stadium on Monday when they take on the injury-hit Parramatta.
