TV’s most fascinating experiment ends with an emotional gut-punch

70 Up brings to a close one of the most fascinating – and arguably the longest-running – shows in the annals of TV history. It started in 1964 with a group of 14 children from a cross-section of English society in the documentary Seven Up! It was there we met Cockney lad Tony, who at age seven planned to be a jockey; headstrong Jackie, who said she would marry a boy with money; and Paul, who was raised in a boy’s home and in reply to a question about his future education replied, “What’s a university?”

Every seven years since, director and behind-the-camera interviewer Michael Apted returned to see how these playful children became feisty teenagers, then parents and eventually grandparents; how marriages were made and unmade; how hopes soared and were sometimes extinguished.

    Examined lives • Jane Goodall

In the early 1960s, contentious talk about the injustices of the British class system was part of the stock-in-trade of Manchester pubs. Most of the talk was washed away by pints of Watney’s Red Barrel but occasionally something sparked, as when Granada Television producer Tim Hewat, after denouncing a social divide that “stinks to heaven” asked, “how are we going to dramatise it?”

Never one to avoid answering his own questions, Hewat, a maverick innovator who had risen to the executive ranks in his early thirties, came up with an idea that departed from the standard documentary approach of interviewing officials and professional commentators. Why not talk to the children whose lives were being mapped out for them before they had a chance to speak for themselves?

The most painful housing market plunge is here. And it’s not prices

Falling house prices are the new national obsession. But there’s another property market metric that spells real trouble for the broader economy.

While Australia’s obsession over the question of how far house prices might fall in this historic downturn has gone to a new level following the Reserve Bank’s interest rate rise last week, the biggest threat to the broader economy from this great housing correction is already under way.

Property downturn deepens with less than 50pc of auctions leading to a sale

The traditional spring selling boom is off to a poor start. (ABC News: Kate Ainsworth)

Property sales for the spring season are off to a weak start.

It comes off the back of two long weekends in major capital cities and the RBA lifting the cash rate again last week.

Some economists predict capital city property prices could fall 10-15 per cent from peak to trough.

Australia's auction clearance rate has slumped to a three-month low, while new data shows the number of unsold homes has surged by more than 20 per cent in the past year.

Less than half the auctions that occurred across the country last week resulted in a successful sale.

    222 dirt-cheap Aus suburbs under $350k named – 7 under $100k

Australia’s brutal capital city home values may be out of reach for millions, but a tiny group of regional strongholds is offering dirt-cheap property as low as $50k – here’s what experts say.

Exclusive national real estate trends data reveals just 222 unique suburbs remain across Australia where homes can still be snagged for $350,000 or less – with the bottom-dollar floor sitting in an agricultural border town where houses cost less than a deposit on a Sydney parking space.

Topping the nation’s bargain basement charts is Boggabilla in NSW’s New England region, where the median house price sits at an astounding $50,000 – though that figure comes off just 11 sales over the past year.

Megyn Kelly, Dave Portnoy blast NFL's Roger Goodell for suggesting Super Bowl could be played outside US

Megyn Kelly and Dave Portnoy are blasting NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell over the league’s international ambitions — with both taking aim at the prospect of someday holding the Super Bowl outside the US.

“Playing the Super Bowl outside of America would be like celebrating July 4th in England,” Kelly, who hosts SiriusXM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show,” told The Post on Friday.

“What could Goodell be thinking? Football is a quintessentially American sport — created in America by an American, in and with the support of American cities.”

Kelly added: “Why would we ever celebrate its biggest, most exciting, most-watched moment (and give all of the revenues that come annually to an American host city) outside of our own country?”

Concern over Herrington decision as big clubs watch ‘very closely’

Ex-Socceroos star Tommy Oar has issued a word of caution about Lucas Herrington’s dream Premier League move as the 18-year-old defender prepares for a possible Hull City debut against Manchester United on August 22 (AEST).

Herrington’s five-year deal with newly promoted Hull was confirmed on Thursday (AEST) as the Tigers agreed terms for an Australian football record $33 million transfer from the Colorado Rapids.

Oar, 34, has joined Stan Sport’s team of football experts after working on the 2026 FIFA World Cup for SBS.

“There are two ways of looking at this,” Oar said on Stan’s Premier League season preview show.

Headlined by Lucas Herrington’s record move to Hull City, almost a third of the World Cup squad are changing clubs with January’s Asian Cup looming

From Socceroos to soccer-moves, the World Cup has launched Australia’s top footballers into the transfer vortex, highlighted by this week’s signing of Lucas Herrington and expected signing of Nestory Irankunda at top-flight European clubs.

At just 18, Herrington has completed a blockbuster $33m move to Premier League returnees Hull City from Colorado Rapids in a deal that eclipsed the transfer record for an Australian, previously held by Harry Souttar who moved to Leicester City for $26.3m in 2023. “The opportunity to play in the Premier League, one of the best leagues in the world, is a dream come true,” Herrington said.

Most Americans view rising living costs as biggest barrier to a better life, survey finds

When asked to detail what would make a better life in three to five years, 60% of US adults said greater financial security

Americans may seem increasingly divided on beliefs and values, but in a new survey of more than 30,000 adults from across the country spanning generations and economic classes, a majority of Americans agree there’s a significant barrier to achieving a better life: the rising cost of living.

When asked to describe what a better life in three to five years would look like, 60% of Americans said they wanted greater financial security, according to a survey that was conducted by the McKinsey Institute for Economic Mobility and the WK Kellogg Foundation in mid-April.

Affordability is a 'defining challenge' for Americans, with food costs leading the way, report finds

Affordability is the "defining challenge" when it comes to economic mobility, according to a new report by the McKinsey Institute for Economic Mobility and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The survey of 30,000 Americans across income levels found that 90% of those polled cited groceries and food prices as a top cost concern, even over other key expenses, such as housing and healthcare.

"We face a common challenge, and that is the rising cost of living," said John-Paul Julien, a partner at McKinsey & Co. and co-founder of the McKinsey Institute for Economic Mobility. "Although people are experiencing the economy differently, there is this shared feeling that rising costs are making it difficult to get ahead."

Apple overtakes Nvidia as most valuable company as iPhone maker avoids 'capex pitfalls'

What happened: Apple (AAPL) reclaimed the title of the world's most valuable public company from Nvidia (NVDA) as the iPhone maker's stock headed toward a record-high close on Monday.

Shares rose over 1%, giving Apple a market capitalization of roughly $4.94 trillion, per Yahoo Finance data. Nvidia's market cap stood at $4.83 trillion.

What's behind the move: Apple shares have climbed more than 22% year to date, outperforming the "Magnificent Seven" group, as investors increasingly view the company's restrained AI spending as a strength rather than a weakness.

"Once criticized for not spending more on AI, they have been able to avoid some of those capex pitfalls," said Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.

Apple dethrones Nvidia as the world's most valuable company

Nvidia stock dropped on Monday, costing the chipmaker its position as the world's most valuable company, swapping positions with Apple.

Monday's 5% decline in Nvidia shares extends a volatile stretch for the company and chip makers broadly. The most recent selling in chips was sparked earlier this month by a new AI model from a Chinese startup that investors fears as a new "DeepSeek moment."

Monday's decline followed a report that Nvidia is in talks to provide $250 billion of financing for OpenAI's data centers, reviving fears of circular dealmaking and huge capex spending, which investors have become increasingly wary of.

Nvidia and Apple swapped positions in Monday's session as Nvidia stock fell to a market cap to about $4.77 trillion. Apple stock, meanwhile, rose 2%, hitting a market cap of roughly $5 trillion.

Australia’s ‘most progressive’ census comes at personal cost to April – but it means their family will finally be counted

August 11’s national census will for the first time include questions about sexual orientation, sex at birth and gender

Self-professed “data nerd” April Long was excited to fill in their first census after welcoming their son, Kai, to the world. But as they opened the 2021 survey, they quickly realised it wasn’t made for them.

It excluded Long’s role as a parent, made assumptions about their gender and asked where Kai’s mother and father were born – when he has two mums.

Many “rainbow families” echoed similar experiences of the census being unable to fully capture the LGBTQ+ community.

Do you have to complete the 2026 Census? What happens if you don't?

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

The Census is run by the Australian government every five years — but Peter Doukas, chair of the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia (FECCA), believes it's important to remember this questionnaire is strictly "apolitical".

Since 1911, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has conducted the Census of Population and Housing, regardless of the political party in power. Data collected is used to inform decisions around the funding and location of schools, transport and health care services.

Doukas told SBS News the Census also provides valuable information on the demographic makeup of multicultural communities.

2026 Census explained: Key date, how to fill it out, who needs to take part and potential fines

Census night is closing in and preparations to ensure every single person and household is counted are ramping up.

The survey, set to take place on Tuesday, August 11, is held every five years, providing a snapshot of the economic, social and cultural make-up of the nation and how it is evolving.

Australia’s largest collection of statistical data is used to guide planning for schools, healthcare, transport and other services, and informs the allocation of billions of dollars in Commonwealth funding.

Everyone in Australia on August 11 — including international tourists and even babies — needs to be included on a Census form.

Ranked: Netflix’s 20 Official Most-Watched Series Of Recent Years

Netflix took a major transparency step in December 2023, when it went further than any competitor by releasing an extensive list of its most-watched films and shows.

At the time, Netflix said that this would give creators and investors “deeper insights into our audiences,” allowing the industry to pore over its viewing data every six months.

Netflix revealed during the week that it will stop publishing its biannual What We Watched reports, replacing them with yearly insights. The streamer’s report for the first half of 2026 will be its last six-month update.

So, to mark the final biannual What We Watched report, Deadline has collated four years’ worth of viewing figures to bring you an official ranking of the most-watched shows on Netflix in the data dump era.

‘Most famous tree in the world’: Sherwood Forest’s 1,000-year-old Major oak dies

Nottinghamshire tree, one of Europe’s oldest and largest, fails to produce leaves after being stressed by series of hot, dry summers

The Major oak, one of Europe’s oldest, largest and most celebrated ancient trees, has died.

The huge tree, which has grown in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, England, for at least 1,000 years, failed to produce any leaves this year, after becoming stressed by a series of hot, dry summers.

Thousands of visitors admire the oak each year, with its great age, enormous 11-metre girth and 28-metre canopy inspiring a forest of folklore. Although the oak would not have been hollow in Robin Hood’s day, it was said to have provided a sanctuary for the outlaw and his gang when fleeing the tyrannical Sheriff of Nottingham.

Major Oak: Ancient 'Robin Hood' tree is dead, experts say

An ancient oak tree that has stood in the heart of a famous forest for hundreds of years and is linked to the legend of Robin Hood has died, experts believe.

The Major Oak is estimated to have lived in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire for up to 1,200 years, and is considered one of Britain's biggest oak trees.

Conservationists worked to protect the tree, which attracted millions of visitors over its life, but in recent years the natural giant was in decline.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) – the conservation charity which manages the forest – said after the tree's first spring with no leaves this year, scientific experts believed the Major Oak had died.

Ancient Sherwood Forest oak tree reputed to have sheltered Robin Hood has died

When knights of old went looking for Robin Hood, they knew where to find him. The legendary outlaw has been associated with England’s Sherwood Forest for centuries, and one tree in particular has traditionally been cited as his hideout: the Major Oak.

Scientists now believe this 1,200-year-old oak tree has died after it failed to produce any new leaves this spring, British conservation body the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said in a news release.

With a canopy spread of 28 meters (92 feet) and a trunk circumference of 11 meters (36 feet), the Major Oak was one of the biggest trees in Britain. Supports for some of the branches were put in place in the early 20th century, and the tree was fenced off in the 1970s.

Messi mania endures. When Lionel Messi signed with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer in 2023, skeptics wondered if he was just playing out his string in the U.S., as other international greats (David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney) had done before. Messi, however, took the U.S. by storm, going on a goal-scoring tear upon his arrival, causing surges in MLS attendance and viewership, and ultimately turning Inter Miami from a cellar dweller into the 2025 MLS Cup champs: he had two assists in Inter’s 3-1 win over Vancouver and was named MVP of the match. Now, another World Cup, perhaps his last one, awaits Messi, 38, in his adopted home. He stamped his legacy at the last World Cup, in Qatar in 2022, when he won his first title and was named best player of the tournament. Back-to-back championships for Argentina—no country has achieved that since Brazil with Pelé in 1958 and 1962—would somehow send Messi even higher into the stratosphere and resolve the GOAT debate once and for all.
