Ice hockey’s most hated team is a PNG Chiefs blueprint in waiting

The Vegas Golden Knights are widely regarded as one of the greatest expansion teams in sporting history.

And there are easy parallels with the NRL’s PNG Chiefs that could make them worth studying, but they’d be taking a blueprint from a league villain.

Since Vegas’ inception in the 2017-18 NHL season, they have defied the traditional, agonisingly slow birth of a new franchise.

Instead, they built an instant juggernaut, capturing the Western Conference crown and booking a ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals three times in nine seasons.

No team in the NHL has won more division titles, playoff games or playoff series since Vegas entered the league.

Golden Knights embracing villain persona in Stanley Cup Final run

The Golden Knights are the “villains” in this year’s Stanley Cup Final, and it is a “role they’ve embraced, not just as far as this final but as the defining quality of their entire existence,” according to Sean McIndoe of THE ATHLETIC. The “list of reasons to hate the Knights starts with jealousy, as they enter their ninth season of perpetual contention without ever really suffering through a bad season, but it doesn’t end there.” Their “win-at-all-costs mentality is enviable on some level, but at some point some folks start getting tired of their whole act” (THE ATHLETIC, 6/1). In Boston, Steve Conroy wrote the Golden Knights have “now become the black hat-wearing Oakland Raiders” of the NHL. They “take on players no one else will touch,” like G Carter Hart who was acquitted of sexual assault charges, they “blow off post-game press conferences and refuse to let the coach they just fired interview with other teams.” Conroy: “Whatever. Just win, baby” (BOSTON HERALD, 6/1).

NHL Playoffs R3 Review: Vegas rolls the dice as Presidents' Trophy curse continues

Round 3 of the Stanley Cup playoffs is over, and so only the top two teams remain alive with finals now set to take centre stage. But who picked up the most points in the round just gone, which goalie shone, and what was trending on social media throughout? You can find all that and more in this review!

The conference finals featured just nine games, and player productivity reflected that. The top spot went to Danish forward Nikolaj Ehlers from Carolina, who scored two goals and added three assists in five games.

His goal in the second game against Montreal in overtime was especially crucial, tying the series at 1-1 and setting up the Hurricanes to advance in five games. The former longtime Winnipeg forward clearly showed why he was one of the most sought-after free agents last summer.

Power price drops for most customers as batteries flatten peak

Batteries have taken over the National Energy Market's most valuable hours, setting the price more often than any other technology. (Synergy)

Surging levels of renewable energy and better reliability from coal-fired generators are set to give consumers a break, with benchmark power prices to fall up to 10 per cent for consumers and more for small businesses.

In what will be welcome news for power users weary from years of big tariff hikes, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has decided to cut the default market offer (DMO) in several states.

The offer acts as a safety net by setting the maximum, or ceiling, price retailers can charge affected customers.

Power bills set to fall despite Iran uncertainty

Homes and businesses will start feeling immediate relief from rising electricity bills within weeks after regulators locked in price cuts for consumers across the eastern seaboard.

The Australian Energy Regulator on Tuesday said it would reduce the maximum rates that retailers can charge customers on standard electricity plans, known as default market offers, from July 1.

The default price cuts – up to 5 per cent ($137) in parts of NSW and 7 per cent ($155) in south-east Queensland – mark the steepest cuts since 2022, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed up the cost of energy and triggered double-digit power bill rises. Prices will rise 1.5 per cent in South Australia.

Who Is 'The Boroughs'' Most Menacing Security Guard Hank? Meet Eric Edelstein, the Actor Behind the Beloved Role

Netflix has no shortage of villains, but few feel as immediately suffocating as Hank Williams in the new sci-fi mystery series ‘The Boroughs’. Eric Edelstein brings the head of security to life in this supernatural drama, and from the very first episode, he commands the screen with the kind of low-key menace that gets under your skin and stays there.

‘The Boroughs‘ features one of the best ensemble casts that the television industry has seen in recent memory, but it is Edelstein’s portrayal of Hank that has quietly become one of the show’s most talked-about supporting performances. In a series overflowing with A-list talent, a character like Hank stands out precisely because his threat feels ordinary, institutional, and all too real.

Eric Edelstein steals the show in Netflix’s The Boroughs from Stranger Things creators

Eric Edelstein delivers a commanding performance as Hank Williams in Netflix’s “The Boroughs,” a supernatural sci-fi drama that premiered on May 21, 2026. The 8-episode series, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and executive produced by the Duffer Brothers, has earned an IMDB rating of 7.5/10 with early critical praise for its clever blend of retirement-community warmth and cosmic horror elements.

Eric Edelstein, born April 23, 1977, has built a career as a reliable character actor across film and television, with roles spanning animation and live-action drama. In “The Boroughs,” he plays Hank Williams, the hulking head of security who rules the retirement community with an iron grip. From the very first episode, Edelstein commands the screen with his portrayal of a low-key menacing enforcer—a character who initially appears antagonistic but becomes crucial to the ensemble’s survival. His performance provides the series with an essential grounding element amid the speculative science-fiction chaos.

Eric Edelstein commands Netflix’s The Boroughs as menacing security chief Hank

Eric Edelstein commands Netflix’s “The Boroughs” as the menacing head of security, Hank Williams, whose iron-fisted control of the seemingly perfect retirement community anchors the Duffer Brothers’ new supernatural mystery series. Since its May 21, 2026 debut, the sci-fi thriller has garnered widespread praise for its ensemble cast and intricate storytelling, with Edelstein’s portrayal of the hulking, irritable Hank emerging as a standout performance that commands every scene he inhabits.

Hank Williams serves as the authoritarian backbone of The Boroughs, a seemingly idyllic retirement community that becomes ground zero for an otherworldly threat. Edelstein’s character maintains order through intimidation and strict protocol, ruling the community with what the series describes as “an iron grip.” His presence creates immediate tension: residents fear him, staff answer to him, and his role as security chief positions him as a gatekeeper between the normal world and the supernatural forces that begin infiltrating the community. This type of authoritarian character provides the necessary friction for a mystery narrative, forcing other residents to navigate their supernatural discoveries while contending with Hank’s unwillingness to acknowledge threats that exist outside conventional security parameters.

Man Utd's Fernandes sets new outright Premier League assist record

London (AFP) – Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes set a new outright record of 21 assists in a single Premier League season when he set up Patrick Dorgu's goal against Brighton on Sunday.

The match, on the final day of the Premier League campaign, was still goalless when Dorgu powered in a 33rd-minute header from Fernandes's corner at the Amex Stadium.

Dorgu's goal gave Fernandes sole possession of a record he had shared with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, both of whom managed 20 assists in a Premier League season.

And after Bryan Mbeumo had doubled United's lead, Portugal midfielder Fernandes made it 3-0 in the 48th minute with his ninth league goal of the season — a low shot drilled into the bottom corner from Dorgu's pass.

If organizers schedule an important tennis tournament and a slew of the world’s best players miss it, is it still an important tournament?

This is the question the Madrid Open will present to the tennis world over the next 10 days. It was a similar story at the Canadian Open last summer, when Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka skipped the event.

The Madrid Open and the Canadian Open are two of the six biggest mixed events in tennis outside the Grand Slams, known as ATP Masters 1000s and WTA 1000s. The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif., the Miami Open, the Italian Open and the Cincinnati Open are the others.

At the 2026 Madrid Open, is it Sinner—and Sabalenka—take all?

Two dominant No. 1s descend on the Caja Magica, but how will the field fare? Six things to watch.

Last month we watched the Sunshine Double. On Tuesday we begin the…what should we call it? The Dirty Double? The Clay-Thousand? The Euro Slide?

However we want to say it, the tours will spend the next month at the recently expanded clay 1000s in Madrid and Rome.

With the Madrid draws made, here are six things to watch for as the players take over the Caja Magica for the next two weeks.

Carlos Alcaraz has a wrist injury. Novak Djokovic has a shoulder injury. That means the No. 2, 3, and 4 seeds are Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger Aliassime, and Ben Shelton, respectively. Combined, Sinner has won his last 22 meetings with those three opponents. The last time he lost to any of them was 2023.

Consent forms filed in federal court on Friday show that nearly 2,000 ski and snowboard instructors have joined a collective action against Vail Resorts, alleging Fair Labor Standards Act lawsuit against the company.

The case, Quint et al. v. Vail Resorts, Inc., alleges Vail Resorts failed to properly compensate snowsports instructors for required job duties. Nearly 2,000 Vail Resorts instructors join lawsuit against ski resort conglomerate

The Vail Daily reports the lawsuit says Vail Resorts, which owns Park City Mountain, failed to properly compensate instructors for required job duties.

That includes off-the-clock work including time spent traveling between job sites, putting on and removing equipment and attending training sessions.

The lawsuit also claims instructors were not reimbursed for necessary expenses like ski equipment and work-related cell phone use.

Vail Resorts has denied the allegations, saying it has complied with wage laws and properly paid its employees.

Instructors who were employed at any Vail resort as of Dec. 2, 2017 are eligible to join the lawsuit. The deadline to file a claim was April 15, but a recent judge’s order could extend the timeline.

Norway Scrambles Most Advanced Fighter Jet in the World to Intercept Russian Spy Plane

OSLO— Norwegian Air Force F-35A fighters scrambled from Evenes Air Station (EVE) on 15 April to intercept an unidentified aircraft approaching Norwegian airspace. The Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) mission identified the contact as a Russian Ilyushin Il-38 maritime patrol aircraft.

A Norwegian (DY) passenger jet was placed in a holding pattern during the scramble as the military alert took priority over civil air traffic. The F-35s were airborne for approximately two hours before returning to Evenes (EVE), and the interception concluded without incident, ht.no reported.

The scramble followed standard NATO procedure for unknown aircraft detected near a member nation’s territorial boundaries.

According to Defense Blog on April 19, the Norwegian Air Force launched the aircraft from Evenes Air Station after detecting an unidentified contact. The sortie lasted approximately two hours and resulted in the identification of a Russian Ilyushin Il-38 maritime patrol aircraft.

Norwegian Air Force spokesperson Major Stian Roen confirmed the operation, stating: “F-35s were sent out on a completely normal QRA mission. It is standard procedure that the aircraft take off as quickly as possible in such situations.”

    Russian fighter jets pose challenges

Norwegian fighter jets were reportedly sent out more than 40 times last year to identify and document a total of 53 Russian fighter jets flying close to Norwegian airspace. During Easter came reports of an unusually close encounter in the Arctic, which Norway regularly patrols on behalf of NATO.

While the Russians claim there was nothing hostile about the encounter, it portrayed for the second time in recent weeks the drama that can occur in, under and above the seas off Norway. Last week came reports of how Norwegian and British forces teamed up to track, monitor and ultimately fend off Russian submarines believed to be planning sabotage of underwater cables and pipelines in the North Sea.
