Rafael Nadal 'living in constant pain' and shares heartbreaking three-word message

It’s been almost two years since Rafael Nadal retired from professional tennis at the Davis Cup Finals, and the 22-time Grand Slam champion has now shed light on the “pain” he felt on a daily basis. Nadal was famously injury-prone compared to his two greatest rivals, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard was diagnosed with Muller-Weiss syndrome very early in his career, a degenerative bone disorder in his left foot. It troubled him throughout his playing years, while he also faced wrist, rib and hip injuries, among others.

Since ending his career in November 2024, Nadal has barely touched a racket. The former world No. 1 did get back out on the court at the recent Rafa Nadal Academy Slam, an exhibition event celebrating 10 years of his Mallorcan tennis centre. But the 40-year-old has admitted he now even forgets he was a tennis player, adding: “Life keeps going.”

Rafael Nadal reveals ‘only positive’ from his injuries and what is ‘difficult’ to find after retiring

Rafael Nadal has named the “only positive” that has come from his string of injuries during his playing career.

The Spaniard won a remarkable 22 Grand Slams, reached No 1 in the world, claimed a gold medal at the Olympics in both singles and doubles, and earned the moniker ‘The King of Clay’ as he dominated the red dirt surface in unprecedented ways.

However, the 40-year-old was struck down by severe knee tendinitis, iliopsoas tears in his hip, abdominal tears, rib fractures, and a congenital foot injury that nearly ended his career as a teenager.

The wear and tear of more than 20 years on the ATP Tour eventually took its toll, and Nadal was forced to retire at the age of 38 in 2024 following another hip injury.

Rafael Nadal: 22-time Grand Slam singles champion discusses injury struggles in new Netflix documentary

Rafael Nadal had one of the greatest tennis careers the game has ever seen. He also spent nearly all of it in pain.

Between his first French Open win in 2005 and retirement in 2024, the Spaniard won 22 Grand Slam singles titles – the second-highest total of any man.

He was part of the 'Big Three' era, where he, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic carved up the sport's biggest prizes and thrilled fans.

But a chronic foot injury meant Nadal had to find different ways just to get through matches, let alone win them.

In a new Netflix series, the 39-year-old opens up about the risks he took with his health in order to achieve greatness.

Pain is the spur: Rafael Nadal reveals chronic foot problem plagued career

Rafael Nadal has revealed he spent most of his career in pain as he willed himself to play through a chronic foot injury and went on to win 22 grand slam titles while spending two decades ruling men’s tennis alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard, who retired in 2024, said he took immense risks with his health to keep his career going, after a Netflix series called Rafa provided an in-depth look into his physical and mental struggles to pursue greatness.

“I’ve had to make decisions about my health, where you are on the borderline between right or wrong. But if I hadn’t explored all that, I probably would have had 10 fewer grand slams … this is the reality,” Nadal told the BBC on Friday.
