Spaniard condemns 'ignorant drunks' after Melbourne confrontation

Melbourne (AFP) – Alejandro Davidovich Fokina hit out at "ignorant drunks" after confronting the crowd during his gruelling five-set win over Reilly Opelka at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The 14th-seeded Spaniard remonstrated with spectators in the front rows at Kia Arena when down 2-1 to the American in the fourth set.

Davidovich Fokina marched over to talk to a section of the crowd, angrily pointing his finger.

The chair umpire climbed down from his seat to speak to the spectators.

"It can happen here, it can happen wherever in the world," said the 26-year-old Spaniard about the behaviour.

"So there were four ignorant drunks that I can do nothing about. Nothing more."

Australian Open Successfully Replicates Ticketmaster Digital Queue Management Experience for On-Ground Entry

After years of experimentation, Tennis Australia has confirmed it has finally nailed the full Ticketmaster experience in a live setting, with thousands of fans at Melbourne Park spending hours standing still, trying unsuccessfully to refresh themselves and slowly going mad.

Organisers said the on-ground entry system was designed to bring the same familiar confusion and despair Australians have come to expect from buying tickets online.

“Fans told us they loved the unpredictability of Ticketmaster’s digital queues. So we thought, why limit that to the internet? Why not let people enjoy it physically, in 34-degree heat, with the added opportunity to buy overpriced water?” a Tennis Australia spokesperson said.

Sonay Kartal will look to get past the first round of the Australian Open and might fancy her chances against Anna Kalinskaya who has struggled with injury this past year.

Reflective of Kalinskaya’s injury woes, Kartal was stronger in last year’s hard court season overall – but has had better Slam results on the clay and grass than on the Slam hard courts.

Kartal’s strength since her breakout year on the tour is that she is still a first-time opponent for many of the higher-ranked players. Her disruptive style of play has caused a handful for several players giving her some notable scalps.
