Coleman Wong beats Pablo Llamas Ruiz to edge closer to Australian Open main draw

After his win in the second round of qualifying, the 21-year-old is one win away from competing against the world’s best at the grand slam

Coleman Wong Chak-lam defeated Spain’s Pablo Llamas Ruiz 7-6, 6-0 in the second round of the Australian Open qualifying on Wednesday, moving one win away from making the main draw.

The Hong Kong player hit 34 winning shots, served 12 aces and committed just 11 unforced errors at Melbourne Park’s ANZ Arena.

Wong, who is ranked 80 places higher than his opponent, stepped up a gear in the second set, disposing of Ruiz 6-0 in only 25 minutes.

Women’s doubles world No.2 Taylor Townsend and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens were among players who punched their tickets into the second round of Australian Open 2026 women’s singles qualifying at Melbourne Park on Monday.
