‘Moana’ Trailer Reveals Dwayne Johnson’s Full Look as Maui in Live-Action

In a new trailer, Disney has revealed the first look at Dwayne Johnson as Maui in the live-action “Moana” remake. Johnson voiced the once-mighty demigod in the original 2016 animated film, which follows an adventurous teenager named Moana as she embarks on a quest to save her village on the island of Motunui.

Newcomer Catherine Laga’aia plays the titular character in the upcoming live-action film. Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in both the 2016 original and its 2024 sequel, serves as an executive producer alongside director Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon and Charles Newirth. Producers include Johnson, Beau Flynn (for FlynnPictureCo), Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia (via their Seven Bucks Productions banner), and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

‘Moana’s Dwayne Johnson On Wig & Prosthetics To Bring Maui To Life In Live-Action Remake

Disney released the trailer for their live-action remake of Moana, and viewers got to see Dwayne Johnson reprise his role of Maui.

Johnson’s look as the demigod has divided fans of the animated film, and in a new interview, the actor and film director Thomas Kail explained the design behind Maui.

“We knew that it had to be something that could have real lift to it,” Kail told Entertainment Weekly about Johnson’s wig for the film. “Because you’re doing this on the water, ‘what does it look like wet?’ is a real conversation when you’re making Moana. That one weighs seven pounds more with all the water in it for all those hours a day.”

Having brought most of the classic Disney animated movies to the big screen, they’ve run out of films from decades ago that could do with a rework and have now found themselves needing to reboot movies that aren’t even that old, animated movies that are actually still getting their own sequels. Despite this, the Disney strategy is primed to continue working.
