Chairman Bang Tells the Real Story Behind Making BTS’ Historic ‘ARIRANG’

"BTS 2.0 shouldn't remain an extension of the past – it had to be a declaration that opens a new chapter."

BTS’ ARIRANG, the South Korean group’s return album after their nearly four-year hiatus, ended up at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 11) for a second consecutive week, marking the group’s seventh No. 1 on the chart and its longest-running ever. It wasn’t the only record set. The LP’s lead focus track, “Swim,” also launched at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making BTS the first group to debut an album and song atop the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 simultaneously multiple times (the group achieved the feat in 2020 with Be and “Life Goes On”).

K-pop without the K: BTS’ English-heavy comeback sparks debate over cultural identity

BTS is officially back. After a four-year hiatus for mandatory military service, the massively popular K-pop group has returned in full force with their new album Arirang, released March 20. The record debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums and Vinyls chart, and has held its place atop the Billboard 200 for two weeks in a row.

But it hasn’t been a flawless comeback – as Arirang has reignited concerns over the outsized influence Western tastes may be having on mainstream Korean pop music. More than 80% of the album’s lyrics are English, as opposed to the group’s native Korean.

Kanye West’s ‘Bully’ Debuts at No. 2 on Albums Chart as BTS Holds Top Spot With ‘Arirang’

BTS has outpaced Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, to land a second week atop the Billboard 200.

The K-pop group’s latest album “Arirang” holds steady at No. 1 on the albums chart with 187,000 equivalent album units, down 71% from its opening week with 641,000. Last week, “Arirang” became BTS’ seventh No. 1 album and scored the biggest sales week for an album by a group in over a decade. With its second week at No. 1, “Arirang” has now spent the longest period atop the charts out of all of the group’s previous leaders, which each spent one week at the summit.
