Missing 5-year-old Australian girl believed to be abducted, say police

Australian police believe a five-year-old girl missing in the Outback was abducted, and are searching for a man recently released from prison over her disappearance.

The girl, identified as Sharon by authorities, was last seen on Saturday when she was put to bed in her family home at an Aboriginal town camp in Alice Springs just before midnight.

Northern Territory Police Acting Commander Mark Grieve on Monday told media investigators want to speak with 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, who was staying at the camp and vanished around the same time.

Commander Grieve appealed for anyone with information to contact police, as officers and volunteers comb nearby bush and desert for Sharon.

Northern Territory Police say they believe a five-year-old girl who went missing from her Alice Springs home yesterday has been abducted.

Foot searches resumed at first light this morning, with officers now also searching for Jefferson Lewis, 47, who they say was staying at the same address and has also not been seen since Saturday night.

Investigators are continuing to appeal for information from the public as they hope to get Sharon "back to her family" safe and well.

A five-year-old girl was abducted from her home in Alice Springs late on Saturday night, police believe.

Investigators are hunting for a recently released prisoner with a history of domestic violence convictions who they believe can help with the search.

The girl, known as Sharon, was last seen by her parents when they put her to bed about 11.30pm on Anzac Day inside her home on Marshall Court in the Old Timers Camp Aboriginal community. The community is about five kilometres south of the Alice Springs town centre.
