‘The Boys’ Creator on That Firecracker Twist: “Some of the Best Acting We’ve Ever Seen”

Eric Kripke on the final season's fifth episode's dramatic Firecracker betrayal: "You could see it killing her own soul."

[This story with The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke contains major spoilers for season five, episode five, “One-Shots.”]

Wednesday’s episode of The Boys contained one of the most compelling moments in the show’s history: Misty Tucker Gray, better known as Firecracker (Valorie Curry), was forced to go on her bombastic talk show and grossly vilify her pastor who she adores in order to please Homelander (Antony Starr), who has insisted on his followers on depicting him as the only true God. Homelander then “rewards” her act of soul-destroying loyalty by murdering her.

The Boys' Final-Season Bloodbath Continues In Episode 5: 'We Felt That Was The Right Punishment,' EP Says Of Latest Victim

"The Boys" claims another casualty in Season 5, Episode 5 — and for this particular victim, the writing was apparently on the wall since day one.

In the final moments of the hour, after learning that Soldier Boy has been sleeping with Firecracker (and worse, they've been having pillow talk!), Homelander makes an example out of her… by pushing her head into a golden eagle statue, impaling her brain in the process. It's hardly the most graphic death we've seen on "The Boys," but its subtlety only makes it more haunting.

"We always knew he was going to kill Firecracker, maybe as long back as when we introduced the character," series creator Eric Kripke tells TVLine, explaining that she was an allegory for former President Trump loyalists like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Megyn Kelly, Lauren Boebert, and Pam Bondi. "It's the most predictable pattern in the world, which is Trump demanding ultimate allegiance, making someone compromise every value they've ever had, and then kicking them out into the cold."

The Boys showrunner breaks down season 5's most brutal death yet: 'Least surprising surprise ever'

According to Eric Kripke, the show actually takes place in a "reasonably just universe"

The Boys season 5 episode 5, “One-Shots,” pays homage to the comics tradition of standalone issues and chapters by zooming in on several of the show’s supporting characters over the course of a very eventful day. The format allows showrunner Eric Kripke to deliver plenty of absurd humor before things get serious in the final three episodes of the series. But he also uses the vignettes to present several characters with big decisions.

“What I really love to write are moral choices,” Kripke tells Polygon. “You could go back over the show, you could go back over Supernatural, and again and again and again the crossroads moments are always a moral choice because I think that just really defines who you are both as a person and as a fictional character.”
