‘It doesn’t feel right’: Simpson says Carlton coaching job is not for him
West Coast premiership coach Adam Simpson, a part-time coaching consultant at Carlton, has officially ruled himself out of contention to be the Blues’ next senior coach.
A week after Simpson refused to declare if he wanted to coach Carlton, indicating that the circumstances of Michael Voss’ departure meant it was too soon to put his hand up, he has put a line through his own name and said: “It doesn’t feel right.”
The 2018 premiership coach and veteran of more than 300 AFL matches as a player with North Melbourne said he had “a very brief” conversation about the role with Carlton’s hierarchy, but the talks didn’t advance far.
Former Waalitij Marawar (West Coast) Eagles coach Adam Simpson rules himself out of Carlton consideration
Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson says he isn’t interested in taking the coaching role at Carlton despite the club reaching out to him.
Michael Voss called time on his tenure at the club last week, after the Blues’ diabolical start to the season left them sitting 16th with only two wins, one of which came after the former coach left.
Simpson has been out of the coaching box since departing the Eagles, who are known as Waalitij Marawar for Sir Doug Nicholls round, at the end of 2024.
However, the premiership-winning coach said he won’t be entering the race for the role.

Blow for Carlton as premiership-winning AFL coach rules himself out of race for Blues job
One massive name has withdrawn from contention to be Carlton’s next head AFL coach after Adam Simpson ruled himself out on Wednesday night. The West Coast premiership winner had his name thrown in the ring when Michael Voss stepped down as Carlton coach earlier this month.
Along with John Longmire, Simon Goodwin, Nathan Buckley and Paul Roos, there’s plenty of experienced coaches who could potentially be available. But Simpson revealed on Wednesday night that he’s “politely declined” after being contacted by Carlton.
Simpson, who led the Eagles to the AFL flag in 2018, has been working as a part-time coaching consultant at the Blues. “I’m not going to put my hand up for any type of role with Carlton, from a coaching point of view,” Simpson said on AFL 360.
