Hawks to seek clarity from League on contentious Watson non-goal

HAWTHORN will request an explanation from the AFL following a disallowed goal from exciting forward Nick Watson on the half-time bell in Thursday night's 52-point win over St Kilda.
Running in for a set shot after the second-quarter siren, Watson – and the rest of the stadium – believed he had kicked the Hawks' ninth consecutive goal to open the match, but it was overturned, with umpires calling 'play on' before he kicked the ball, having deemed he ran off his line.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has hit out at an umpiring call that robbed forward Nick Watson of a half-time goal on a night the Marvel Stadium surface came under fire for being too slippery under a closed roof.
Mitchell said he was glad Watson’s overturned goal did not affect his side’s 52-point victory – 18.11 (119) to 9.13 (67) – but said the club would be going to the AFL looking for an explanation.
Watson booted a goal after the half-time siren from the right forward pocket, but the umpires ruled he had run off his line – disallowing the score.
“There’s no common sense about that,” Mitchell said. “I would hope that we get an answer from the AFL, I’m sure we will.”
