Videos show destruction after twin earthquake's hit Venezuela

Verified videos posted on social media show the extent of damage and horror of residents after twin earthquakes pummelled Venezuela.

A magnitude-7.2 quake struck an area west of the capital Caracas on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a magnitude-7.5 tremor less than a minute later.

ABC NEWS Verify has authenticated videos posted online showing the devastation the disaster has caused.

This video has been geolocated to inside Venezuela's main international airport, Simón Bolívar International Airport. It is located near Caracas.

It appears to show the moment one of the quakes hits. The power momentarily cuts out as people scream.

Volunteers, medics and relatives of victims have raced to the Altamira area in Caracas hoping to help save survivors from the rubble of collapsed buildings there.

“I live far away [but] … I came here riding my motorbike as fast as I could,” said José Morillo, as he arrived outside a block of flats called Residencias Obelisco.

Morillo said several members of his family were inside the building at the time of the two earthquakes, shortly after 6pm local time. “My brother, my son and nephews are all inside. I have faith. I believe in God alot. I hope everyone is OK – but uncertainty is torture,” the 61-year-old added as rescue workers combed the wreckage.

Major earthquake rattles Venezuela

Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez has declared a state of emergency and shut down schools and airports after the country was hit by two powerful earthquakes this morning.

The first earthquake, measured initially at magnitude 7.1, struck just after 6pm Wednesday local time (8am Thursday AEST), according to the US Geological Survey.

Its epicentre was west of the community of Morón, about 168km from the capital of Caracas, which was heavily shaken.

The quake struck at a depth of about 13.2km, the USGS said.
