‘Very sad day’: More than 200 jobs gone after sudden closure of Australia’s only manganese smelter
Hundreds of jobs have been lost following the immediate shuttering of Australia’s only manganese smelter.
Liberty Bell Bay, located in George Town in northern Tasmania, was ordered to close on Thursday by administrators after it failed to attract a buyer, despite a “tireless” effort to secure a serious offer.

Administrator EY-Parthenon said it had entered into an agreement with a consortium to acquire the smelter.
“In the absence of both a commercially viable transaction, and the funding required to continue operations, the administrators have made the difficult decision to commence the orderly closure of the business with immediate effect,” EY-Parthenon said in a statement.

Tasmanian government minister Felix Ellis says the shuttered Liberty Bell Bay will require "a substantial clean-up effort".
The state's peak mining and mineral processing body says the closure leaves Australia more exposed to geopolitical risks.
Mr Ellis says he is confident a $20 million loan from the state government to the smelter's former owner to purchase ore is recoverable.

The beleaguered Liberty Bell Bay smelter, roughly 50 kilometres north of Launceston, produced an alloy from manganese ore called ferromanganese, a critical component of steelmaking with applications across defence, construction and mining.
