Sony has unveiled the FX5, a new full-frame Cinema Line camera that slots in between the FX3 and the FX6 and brings features previously reserved for the VENICE 2 and BURANO into a compact body. Headline specs include a newly developed 16.6MP fully stacked sensor, 5K open gate recording, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW with two new compression flavors, three base ISOs, and 4K at up to 240 frames per second.
Sony FX3 Refuses to Drop in Price. Maybe FX5 Will Finally Push It Down
The Sony FX3 is stubborn. Not creatively. Financially. Sony launched the FX3 in 2021 as a compact full frame Cinema Line camera, with a European price of around €4,700 and a clear mission: bring Cinema Line image quality into a small Alpha-sized body. More than five years later, the strange part is not that the FX3 is still relevant. The strange part is that its price has barely softened in a meaningful way. That is rare in camera years. Most cameras age quickly. New processors arrive. Autofocus improves. Codecs expand. Screens get better. Monitoring tools become standard. Competitors add features that used to belong only to higher-end cinema bodies. But the FX3 has remained unusually resistant. It is still one of Sony’s most desirable compact cinema cameras, and Sony has had little reason to make it cheaper. Will the rumored Sony FX5 finally change that?

The Sony FX5’s Memory Requirements Are Wild
Sony has announced the exciting new FX5 cinema camera, and it has a ton of interesting features and improvements. It also has among the strictest memory card requirements of any Sony FX or Alpha Series camera to date.
The Sony FX5 “requires” VPG400 CFexpress Type A memory cards to take full advantage of its most powerful video recording features, including internal 16-bit RAW Open Gate recording.
PetaPixel‘s Jordan Drake got his hands on the Sony FX5 ahead of today’s announcement, and tested the FX5 to see what happens when a VPG200 card is inserted.
The FX5 delivers a warning, saying that the inserted card is “Not guaranteed media.” Drake was able to record using the VPG200 card and found no dropped frames.
