Stephen Fleming: England expected to appoint former New Zealand captain as Test coach

Stephen Fleming has held several coaching roles in T20 franchise cricket since he reitred from playing in 2009

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is expected to be appointed as England Test coach after the sacking of Brendon McCullum.

McCullum was fired earlier this month following a string of poor results and several off-field incidents, but remains in charge of England's white-ball sides.

Former England coach Andy Flower subsequently ruled himself out of the running to replace McCullum.

As first reported by the Telegraph,, external Fleming, 53, has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed his former international team-mate.

If appointed, Fleming will have a say – alongside director of men's cricket Rob Key and national selector Marcus North – in the appointment of a new Test captain, following the shock retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket in June.

Stephen Fleming to be appointed England Test coach after impressing ECB

Stephen Fleming is expected to be named as England’s Test coach, after impressing the England and Wales Cricket Board in a series of interviews over the past two weeks. The 53-year-old would work alongside his predecessor, compatriot, former teammate and friend Brendon McCullum, who remains in charge of the white-ball teams.

Fleming stood down as head coach of the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings – as well as their subsidiaries Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 and Texas Super Kings in America’s Major League Cricket – this month. That announcement was made after CSK finished eighth out of 10 teams in this year’s IPL, following on from a last-place finish in 2025, but also less than 24 hours after McCullum was sacked by the ECB as Test coach.
