66th over: England 298-4 (Brook 55, Lawrence 41) After conceding only a three in his last over, Usman reverts to allowing a four – a cut from Brook, showing quick feet and quick hands.

65th over: England 294-4 (Brook 51, Lawrence 41) Mohammad Ali again, with his bouncer ploy. Brook lets one go, rightly deciding that it’s too high, then pulls the next for a single. Discretion as well as valour.

64th over: England 292-4 (Brook 50, Lawrence 41) Usman stays on for now, and Lawrence cuts for three. Brook cuts too, just for a single, but it’s enough to get him to 50 off only 55 balls. It’s his 29th fifty in 38 Tests. Ten of them have turned into hundreds, and four of those have been at Pakistan’s expense. His average against them is now 89.

Quick duo rout Pakistan in Root captaincy return

Joe Root has enjoyed a perfect return to England captaincy duty as they bowled out Pakistan for just 171 at Headingley

Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue have taken five wickets apiece as England dominated the opening day of the first Test against Pakistan ‌at Headingley, in what was pretty much a perfect return to captaincy duty for Joe Root.

Pakistan, who have lost 13 of their last 18 Tests, struggled in the difficult ‌batting conditions after Root won the toss and were dismissed for just 171.

Robinson removed four of Pakistan's top five batters with his ‌movement off the seam, ending up with 5-51, while Tongue shot out the tail with his pace to finish with 5-46.

England win toss and bowl first at overcast Headingley – line-ups

Ollie Robinson's such a good bowler with that new ball, he gets it to talk. The wobble balls are absolutely phenomenal.

Pakistan were just starting to build a partnership but this delay means the batters will have to go back out and get settled again.

It was the best possible start for England and Ollie Robinson as the seamer, who took three wickets in the first over of his Test comeback at Lord's earlier this summer, struck first ball.

A full delivery, nipping back in to Azan Awais and there was little the left-hander could do. Up went the umpire's finger and the Pakistan opener, after an unsuccessful review, was on his way…

Self-saboteurs England and Pakistan face off in ‘El Dysfunctiono’ series

With Pakistan at a low ebb and England at the start of semi-reset, the series at Headingly looks to be an interesting one

The history of Test cricket between England and Pakistan stretches back to 1954 and has been a vibrant one over the years. Yet, for all the memorable battles, plus the cultural ties between the two countries and a fair bit of scandal along the way, a trophy that denotes the rivalry is still to be created.

England lost the Crowe-Thorpe trophy to New Zealand this summer, will look to retain the Basil D’Oliveira trophy in South Africa this winter, and hope they can win back the Ashes next year. Trophies for encounters with India and West Indies go back so far they have been retired and replaced by new ones in recent times.

Stephen Fleming: England expected to appoint former New Zealand captain as Test coach

Stephen Fleming has held several coaching roles in T20 franchise cricket since he reitred from playing in 2009

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is expected to be appointed as England Test coach after the sacking of Brendon McCullum.

McCullum was fired earlier this month following a string of poor results and several off-field incidents, but remains in charge of England's white-ball sides.

Former England coach Andy Flower subsequently ruled himself out of the running to replace McCullum.

As first reported by the Telegraph,, external Fleming, 53, has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed his former international team-mate.

If appointed, Fleming will have a say – alongside director of men's cricket Rob Key and national selector Marcus North – in the appointment of a new Test captain, following the shock retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket in June.

Stephen Fleming to be appointed England Test coach after impressing ECB

Stephen Fleming is expected to be named as England’s Test coach, after impressing the England and Wales Cricket Board in a series of interviews over the past two weeks. The 53-year-old would work alongside his predecessor, compatriot, former teammate and friend Brendon McCullum, who remains in charge of the white-ball teams.

Fleming stood down as head coach of the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings – as well as their subsidiaries Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 and Texas Super Kings in America’s Major League Cricket – this month. That announcement was made after CSK finished eighth out of 10 teams in this year’s IPL, following on from a last-place finish in 2025, but also less than 24 hours after McCullum was sacked by the ECB as Test coach.

England are once again set to be guided by a New Zealander with former Black Caps skipper Stephen Fleming set to be appointed as Brendon McCullum’s replacement as Test coach.

37th over: India 243-1 (Rohit 123, Kohli 36) Brook keeps Bethell on for a third over. He starts well before dishing up a long hop, on a platter. Kohli helps himself to a pull for four, then drives for two. Seven off the over, so Bethell has 3-0-15-0, which is a great effort in the circumstances, even if Rohit is struggling with his cramp.

36th over: India 236-1 (Rohit 122, Kohli 30) Curran continues and beats Kohli outside off – twice in a row. Brook might want to put a slip in. “Only four off his last 11 balls,” Mike Atherton says of Kohli, who then manages a single. Can Rohit produce another of his effortless fours? Not this time. He sends a dab past Rashid at backward point, but Duckett sweeps up. Curran bowls a slow bouncer, which Kohli misses as he dances down the track. Then there’s a better shot from Kohli, who drives past cover and picks up two. But it’s only four off the over, so the required rate rises to 10.85.

The ‘uncomfortable’ truth for England and Messi fans

Spain will start favourites against Argentina in the World Cup final should Lionel Messi pilot his side through Thursday’s (AEST) second semi-final in Atlanta.

“Forget it,” ex-Socceroos striker Scott McDonald said on Stan Sport’s Added Time.

“Because it’s similar to France today. They (England) can’t control the game. If they can’t keep the ball high up the pitch, then you’re going to struggle against Spain…

“But whoever gets in that final, you have to keep the ball. France has shown you today if you can’t do it, Spain are going to cruise through that final again.”

FIFA World Cup 2026 LIVE updates: Argentina comeback win over England seals final against Spain

Cutral Co: In a town in Patagonia boasting a new 26-metre statue of soccer superstar Lionel Messi, joyful Argentines celebrated their country’s advance to the World Cup final after they beat long-time rivals England.

It was a scene repeated in Buenos Aires and across the country. Now only Spain lies between Argentina and their attempt to be the first country to win a back-to-back title since 1962.

In Cutral Co in the southern province of Neuquen, a crowd of about 300 locals gathered to watch the game on a screen set up next to Messi’s towering knees. They burst into screams as the referee blew his whistle at the end of the semi-final against England. Argentina came back from being 1-0 down, ultimately winning 2-1.

‘Awful challenge’ emerges in feisty England v Argentina World Cup semi-final: ‘Where is VAR now?’

There was no love lost between England and Argentina in their FIFA World Cup semi-final, with off-the-ball incidents and brutal challenges from the opening whistle in Atlanta on Thursday (AEST).

The referee had his hands full as neither England nor Argentina took a backward step in pursuit of a place in the final against Spain on July 20 (AEST).

There was a contentious moment inside the first three minutes after Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez went through the back of England star Elliot Anderson.

Fernandez appeared to strike Anderson in the back of the head as England players – led by Jude Bellingham – reacted angrily to the challenge.

England star slaps opponent as coach slammed for epic meltdown

England star Jude Bellingham could find himself in hot water after being caught slapping the head of Argentinian player Valentin Barco in the immediate aftermath of the Three Lions’ World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina.

Watch Jude Bellingham slap Argentina player in the head after blowing World Cup semifinal

England's emotions were at a new low following their heart-wrenching 2-1 World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina, but emotions appear to have gotten the best of Jude Bellingham.

While Argentina celebrated on the pitch near the Real Madrid star, who was standing still and pensively looking onwards in an effort to come to terms with what had just happened during the match, Bellingham was caught walking up to a young Argentinian player and hitting him on the back of the head.

At the current time, it is unclear whether or not 21-year-old Valentin Barco said anything to Bellingham that provoked a reaction.

Never mind missing leg; it pitched outside leg. Washington tried to pull and got in a tangle; replays show the ball actually hit the stumps without dislodging the bails.

The ball from Jacks kept very low but is probably missing leg stump.

38th over: India 212-4 (Washington 27, Axar 33) The last ball of Archer’s spell is a searing yorker that is defended expertly by Axar. Archer, who bowled some ferocious deliveries, finishes with slightly harsh figures of 10-0-60-1.

37th over: India 211-4 (Washington 26, Axar 33) A single off Jacks brings up a quietly superb fifty partnership – no fuss, few frills, but it has settled a match that was in danger of getting away from India.

Why does Djed Spence wear a jaw brace when playing for England?

England and Tottenham Hotspur FC defender Djed Spence is in the midst of a facial injury recovery, you may have noticed.

Having played a key role in the Three Lions' ascension to the quarter-finals of this summer's FIFA World Cup, the 25-year-old is something of a household name these days.

As the ITV and BBC cameras continue to document his defensive exploits – next up for Spence and the rest of Thomas Tuchel's squad is a weekend game against the berserker nation Norway, who have a certain Mr Haaland in their forward line – Spence's noticeable jaw brace has been raising a few questions off-field.
