A nine-year-old boy who litter-picks every day – even diving underwater to remove rubbish – is on a mission to protect wildlife, inspired by his "hero" Sir David Attenborough.
Gemma Maddox, a 30-year-old teaching assistant, said her son Cooper has loved animals for as long as she can remember, spending his nursery days sitting quietly listening for birds.
His love for wildlife grew after watching his first Sir David Attenborough documentary at age six, with him "policing" recycling at home and even holding a funeral for a bird he found dead on the pavement.
In 2025, Cooper, who lives in Padiham, Lancashire, began picking up litter on his walk to school and spent his summer holidays clearing rubbish from beaches and rivers.

Inspired by his hero, Sir David Attenborough, nine-year-old Cooper from Lancashire, is on a mission to protect wildlife. Whether he is picking up trash on his daily walk to school or putting on a full wetsuit to retrieve rubbish underwater, the young environmentalist is dedicated to making a difference.
His mother, Gemma Maddox, 30, says Cooper’s passion for animals started at a very young age. Even during his nursery days, he preferred sitting quietly outside to listen for birdsong over playing on the playground.
"For as long as I can remember, Cooper has had a soft spot for wildlife," Gemma said. "He’d cry whenever there was an ant in the house because he thought I’d try to kill it. I’m not allowed to kill any bugs – I have to get them out safely, and he watches to make sure."
