FUEL EXCISE CUTFuel prices are going to be going up over the next few days, because the government's temporary discount to the fuel excise has come to an end. Yep, filling up the tank is going to get a bit more expensive, because overnight the fuel excise cut officially came to an end, meaning you can expect to see fuel prices creep up by 16 cents a litre. You see, the conflict in the Middle East has been pushing up the price of oil around the world, making fuel a lot more expensive this year, and to help Aussies with those higher costs, the government here introduced a discount in April to cut the extra tax that was added to fuel. But from today, that discount is gone. The government says it won't be extending the cut, cause it was always meant to be temporary, but it's warning petrol stations not to use it as a tactic to hike their prices up too much, and says that Australia's consumer watchdog, the ACCC, will be keeping a close eye on any price gouging. Sydney fuel prices spike as excise discount ends
Fuel prices have risen above $2 a litre in NSW hours after the Albanese government’s fuel excise discount came to an end, triggering fresh warnings of more increases as the prolonged conflict in the Middle East threatens global oil supply.
The average price for regular unleaded passed the $2 mark on Monday morning after the fuel excise discount, which was delivering an approximate 17¢ saving, was withdrawn at midnight. The average national price for unleaded also rose above $2, the first time since May, according to Fuel Check.
Prices on Monday morning were 13¢ higher than what was recorded in Sydney last week. Sydney petrol prices rose by an average of 2.9¢ a litre overnight, according to the NRMA, less than the 3.2¢ recorded nationally.

Petrol prices could surpass $2 a litre and diesel $2.40 in coming days, after the government’s 16-cent discount ends on Sunday.
The 32-cent per litre reduction in fuel excise, introduced in March at the peak of the fuel price spike, was halved to 16 cents in July.
The excise will return to its normal level on 3 August, adding 16 cents per litre to the wholesale prices paid by service stations.
Chris Bowen, the energy minister, told reporters on Saturday the government would not extend the temporary cost-of-living relief.
