End of an era? South Korea’s sun sets in the Premier League but Japan rise

After glory days of Park Ji-sung and Son Heung-min, the new season could be Korean-free for first time since 2005

It has been a cruel summer for South Korea. The national team crashed and burned at the World Cup, the police are investigating the football association, reports have emerged about bribes paid to foreign referees in 2011 and 2012 and there is a real prospect of the English Premier League being Korean-free for the first time since 2005.

That was when Park Ji-sung signed for Manchester United, to start a love affair between the Land of the Morning Calm and England’s top tier that has continued ever since. Park won four titles and his mantle was taken over in 2015 by Son Heung-min at Spurs.

As Japan nears 10 Premier League footballers, Korea faces the prospect of none

Two decades after Park Ji-sung kicked open the door to the English league, the gulf between the Korean and Japanese development systems is rearing its head.

When Park Ji-sung pulled on a Manchester United shirt in 2005, he kicked open the Premier League door for Korean football. Twenty-one years later, Korea risks being left on the other side of it, while Japan could head into the new season with as many as 10 players in what is widely regarded as the world’s top league.

The contrast is stark. Japan had just four Premier League players last season — Kaoru Mitoma at Brighton & Hove Albion, Wataru Endo at Liverpool, Daichi Kamada at Crystal Palace and Ao Tanaka at Leeds United. In the space of a year, that contingent has doubled.
