South Korea president calls for military independence in wake of Trump call to cut joint drills

Lee Jae Myung reiterates desire for full command back in Seoul’s hands after Donald Trump cuts joint exercises, citing warm ties with Kim Jong-un

South Korea’s president has renewed his push to regain independent control of the military from the US in the event of war and urged faster progress in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines after Donald Trump’s order to cut joint drills.

On Sunday night, Trump instructed the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” this week’s joint military exercises with South Korea, saying the nuclear-armed North “has been unthreatening and respectful” and that the US president had a “very good relationship with Kim Jong-un”.

Ministers tread carefully as Trump scales back US drills in South Korea

Japan's defence minister has stressed that cooperation between Australia, Japan and the US is growing ever-more important.

Australia and Japan's defence ministers sat down in Canberra today to discuss the rapidly expanding defence ties between the countries.

It comes as President Donald Trump has scaled back military drills with South Korea.

Australia and Japan's defence ministers have side-stepped questions about Donald Trump's pronouncement that he will scale back military exercises with South Korea — as well as the US president's overtures to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un — while signalling they still see Pyongyang as a serious security threat.

President Donald Trump says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had ‌responded to his overtures after Trump ordered the United States ‌to scale back military exercises with South Korea.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump was asked why Kim had not responded to Trump's overtures.

Their relationship was a dominant theme during Trump's first term, including a series of letters between them, but has received less emphasis in his second term.

End of an era? South Korea’s sun sets in the Premier League but Japan rise

After glory days of Park Ji-sung and Son Heung-min, the new season could be Korean-free for first time since 2005

It has been a cruel summer for South Korea. The national team crashed and burned at the World Cup, the police are investigating the football association, reports have emerged about bribes paid to foreign referees in 2011 and 2012 and there is a real prospect of the English Premier League being Korean-free for the first time since 2005.

That was when Park Ji-sung signed for Manchester United, to start a love affair between the Land of the Morning Calm and England’s top tier that has continued ever since. Park won four titles and his mantle was taken over in 2015 by Son Heung-min at Spurs.

As Japan nears 10 Premier League footballers, Korea faces the prospect of none

Two decades after Park Ji-sung kicked open the door to the English league, the gulf between the Korean and Japanese development systems is rearing its head.

When Park Ji-sung pulled on a Manchester United shirt in 2005, he kicked open the Premier League door for Korean football. Twenty-one years later, Korea risks being left on the other side of it, while Japan could head into the new season with as many as 10 players in what is widely regarded as the world’s top league.

The contrast is stark. Japan had just four Premier League players last season — Kaoru Mitoma at Brighton & Hove Albion, Wataru Endo at Liverpool, Daichi Kamada at Crystal Palace and Ao Tanaka at Leeds United. In the space of a year, that contingent has doubled.

South Korean stock market at three-month low as AI sell-off intensifies

Samsung and SK Hynix fall by more than 10% amid renewed fears over AI spending and Chinese competition

The sell-off in AI stocks has intensified, driving South Korea’s stock market down to its lowest level in three months.

Investors continued to ditch chip stocks on Tuesday, amid rising concerns about the huge amount of borrowing among AI companies to fund their datacentre expansion plans.

The South Korean semiconductor companies SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics fell by more than 10%, dragging the country’s Kospi share index down by 11.5% to its lowest point since mid-April.

US chip stocks extended their recent losses when Wall Street opened on Tuesday, with Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Sandisk, Western Digital Corp and Seagate Technology all down by more than 4%.

Chip stocks slide in US and Asia as AI jitters rattle investors

Shares in major chip firms have fallen sharply in the US and Asia as a sell-off in artificial intelligence-related stocks deepened.

Trading on South Korea's benchmark Kospi index was paused temporarily on Tuesday morning after sliding by 8%. It fell further after the 20-minute halt was lifted, closing 10.8% lower.

The slump was led by technology firms, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both falling by more than 13%.

It comes after AI chip giant Nvidia fell by 5% in New York on Monday, meaning it lost its position as the world's most valuable listed company to Apple.

The tech-heavy Kospi has been halted multiple times so far this year under a stock market mechanism known as a circuit breaker, which is designed to calm panic selling.

KRX activates sell-side sidecar for KOSPI on sharp decline

Korea's bourse operator on Wednesday activated a sell-side sidecar for the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) after the index fell sharply, led by tech losses.

Program trading in KOSPI-listed shares was suspended for five minutes around 10:55 a.m., according to the Korea Exchange (KRX).

The decline came as retail investors sold off large-cap stocks, including SK hynix, as investors question whether massive spending on artificial intelligence (AI) will generate returns enough to justify elevated tech firms' valuations.

A sell-side sidecar is triggered when the KOSPI 200 Futures Index falls 5 percent or more for at least one minute.

Veteran Westpac economist Bill Evans dies at 76 as tributes flow

The news: Highly respected former Westpac chief economist Bill Evans –– the “man who moves markets” –– has passed away at the age of 76.

Evans, who spent 32 years at the helm of Westpac’s economics team, died overnight on his 76th birthday at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Over the span of his lengthy career, he built econometric models of the Australian financial system with the Reserve Bank and run bonds at the Commonwealth Bank before eventually being appointed as the bank’s treasurer.

Evans started at Westpac in 1991 in the midst of the recession Australia “had to have”, serving until 2024 when he stepped aside to assume the role of senior economic adviser.

A cold front will bring rain to Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory as it passes through on Monday.

Sky News Weather Senior Meteorologist Rob Sharpe said Tasmania, in particular, would bear the brunt of the wet weather as the state enters the peak of winter.

Showers in Victoria will begin in the ranges before gradually building into the south-west corner.

A classic winter cold front will surge across southeastern Australia this weekend, with widespread showers and strong winds throughout the weekend, while snowfalls will commence in the alpine region later on Saturday.

The engine of this system is a strong low pressure system centred over the Southern Ocean, closer to Antarctica than Australia. Winds circulating clockwise around this vast system will push moisture and cold air all the way to Tasmania and the southeastern mainland.

68 mins. Hang on though, the defence suddenly opened up for Hiddleston to run through and feed Bayliss to score.

67 mins. This is now over for Scotland. Much is made of the power of South Africa, qnad rightly so, but so much of what is good about them is what you might call micro-disciplines. In contact, in handling, at set piece; they do everything so well, alloyed with that aforementioned power.

66 mins. Scotland are essentially in a vice of the Boks’ making now, with each set piece another turn of the crank. The latest lineout has the home side rapidly into the red zone for sub Porthen to score.

Springboks: Nick Mallett identifies the players for whom Scotland Test will be watershed match

Springboks fly-half Handre Pollard and ex-South Africa head coach Nick Mallett (inset).

Nick Mallett believes there will be some players in the Springboks squad who will be under pressure to shine in Saturday’s Test against Scotland in Pretoria.

After starting their Nations Championship campaign with an impressive 45-21 victory over England in Johannesburg last week, Springboks boss Rassie Erasmus has made 10 changes to his run-on side for the clash against Gregor Townsend’s charges.

That has resulted in several regulars being rested for the Loftus Versfeld showdown while numerous other players will be determined to cement their places in the Boks‘ squad ahead of the eagerly anticipated Greatest Rivalry series against the All Blacks which gets underway in South Africa next month.

'That’s stupid': Scotland captain issues fighting words ahead of Bok clash

SPOTLIGHT: Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu may have faced the Springboks twice already in his career, but he is under no illusion about the magnitude of Saturday’s Nations Championship clash.

Tuipulotu will lead a strong Scotland side at Loftus Versfeld after head coach Gregor Townsend made just three changes to the team that beat Argentina in Cordoba last week.

It will be the skipper’s first time facing the Boks on African soil, having previously come up against them at the World Cup in 2023 and at Murrayfield in 2024.

Tuipulotu is also familiar with many of the Springbok players through the URC, but believes playing them in South Africa presents an entirely different challenge.

Not what England needed but there can be no argument! Willemse gathered a high kick and Freeman came screaming up. He never stooped and met Willemse’s head with his shoulder. He might be in trouble here actually. They’ll review. Could be a red. 50/50 for me.

Siya Kolisi hails 'special human being' Tom Curry and what Springboks learned from World Cup semi-final

Springboks captain Siya Kolisi is looking forward to locking horns with old adversary Tom Curry when they face England in the Nations Championship at Ellis Park.

The two flankers are no strangers to playing on the big stage and both start on the openside for their respective team on Saturday, with Kolisi hugely respectful of Curry.

“He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever played against,” he praised.

“I remember since 2018, and then in the 2019 World Cup Final too. He is a special human being, and I love playing against him. Tomorrow’s going to be no different.”

T20 World Cup: England the best they have been "in years", says Alex Hartley

Former spinner Alex Hartley says England are playing their best cricket for "years" and she is "very confident" about their chances in Thursday's T20 World Cup semi-final.

England progressed to their meeting with South Africa at The Oval with five wins from five in Group 2 and a series of impressive performances.

But they have not won a World Cup since 2017, faltering in underwhelming fashion in five knockout matches across those nine years.

"They look good," Hartley, 32, told BBC Test Match Special. "I don't want to put the mockers on them.

"I am going into the semi-finals nervous, because we haven't seen them under pressure and it's where England have crumbled and failed over the last three or four years, but I am very confident."

‘Utterly baffled’ South Korea president calls for ‘investigation’

Many of the Socceroos squad can remember their “ruined” dream when they were knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics by Egypt.

Connor Metcalfe, Harry Souttar and Cameron Devlin were beaten by Egypt 2-0, the result knocking them out of the 2021 competition.

“They were quite a big physical team. I just remember it being really humid and hot and we didn’t play our best game.

“They ruined our dream. So, yeah, I guess you could say it’s a bit of a revenge, personally.”

Egypt’s team will be led by superstar Mo Salah, but for Australia, the group is banking on the committed belief in their status as the “underdog”.

Alphonso Davies returns as Canada approach World Cup moment of destiny

Los Angeles date offers Bayern Munich player the chance to heal a wound that opened at this same stadium last March

The decoy days are over – apparently. Alphonso Davies made his first media appearance of this World Cup in Los Angeles on Saturday lunchtime and promised the opening last-32 game of the tournament would be the stage for his long-awaited return.

For Canada, who face fellow knockout newcomers South Africa here in a Sunday matinee, it could not come at a more crucial time. For his head coach, Jesse Marsch, who had used Davies’s fitness as an apparent ruse to distract his Swiss counterparts in Vancouver this week, it’s opportune too. That gimmick didn’t work. Les Rouges suffered a first defeat of their own World Cup and were sent down south.

Women's T20 World Cup: South Africa stutter against Bangladesh but apply pressure to India

India were knocked out of the T20 World Cup at the group stage by a six-wicket defeat by Australia, meaning South Africa will play England in the semi-finals.

On a dramatic day at Lord's, South Africa first beat Bangladesh to leave India needing a win against unbeaten Australia to progress.

They looked well placed when a thrilling 56 from 27 balls by captain Harmanpreet Kaur lifted their score 170-4 amid partisan support and with superstar Virat Kohli in the stands.

India, who took 36 runs from the final two overs, were on top again when they reduced Australia to 68-3 in the 10th over of the chase.

South Africa scrapes past Bangladesh and leaves India needing to upset Australia at Lord's

LONDON (AP) — Australia produced a statement group-closing win that eliminated India and advanced South Africa into the semifinals of the Women's Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday.

Australia looked primed for a seventh crown in 10 World Cups after blowing away India by six wickets with an over to spare at a packed Lord's.

India had to win to overtake South Africa for the last semifinal spot.

But half-centuries by Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner in a 100-run partnership off 59 balls powered Australia to victory in front of an India-heavy crowd of 27,163, a second record attendance for a World Cup group match in 24 hours.
