Samad launches Pakistan into first Asian Games men's cricket final
Nagoya (Japan) (AFP) – Abdul Samad smashed 22 off five balls in an unbeaten 30 on Thursday as Pakistan's men cruised into their maiden Asian Games cricket final, where arch-rivals India are the potential opponents.
Pakistan thumped Bangladesh by six wickets with nine balls to spare in a semi-final reduced to 13 overs because the outfield was too wet for play at the start time of 9:00 am.
They will face either world champions India or Sri Lanka, who clash later, for the gold medal on Saturday.
"To be honest, we don't really care about who will win and who will reach the final," said Pakistan batsman Saim Ayub, who scored 21.
Yasir Ali took 16 off Muqeem’s last over for bronze in 2023, and Bangladesh meet Pakistan again for a place in the final
A fourth washout in Nisshin sent Bangladesh into the Asian Games semi-finals, where Litton Das’s side, without Najmul Hossain Shanto, face Sahibzada Farhan’s Pakistan on Thursday.
The last time Bangladesh and Pakistan met at the Asian Games, the bronze medal came down to one over. Bangladesh needed 20 off it in Hangzhou in October 2023. Yasir Ali hit Sufiyan Muqeem for 16 off the first four balls, including two sixes, and Rakibul Hasan hit the last ball for four.
Both Yasir and Muqeem are in Japan, and the two sides meet again on Thursday, 1 October, this time for a place in the final.
