Former Liberal politician Bruce Baird dies aged 84
The NSW Liberal Party recognised Mr Baird in a statement on Friday.
"Bruce was a party stalwart and a greatly respected politician, serving the people of NSW in the state and federal parliaments," a spokesperson said.
"We offer our deepest condolences on behalf of all members to his family at this difficult time."
While he was the NSW minister for Transport, Roads and Tourism, Mr Baird played a key role in securing the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
Speaking on a podcast in 2024, when asked what made him enter politics, he attributed it to the Vietnam War and a talk by an American priest.

Several sources close to Baird have confirmed the keen ocean swimmer died in Singapore after a fall on his way home from a European holiday.
Baird is the father of former NSW premier Mike Baird, who led the state from 2014 to 2017, journalist Julia Baird, and Steve Baird, who works in the not-for-profit sector. His wife Judy died in 2021.
As the state MP for the now-abolished seat of Northcott, Baird was instrumental in winning the Olympics for Sydney while at Macquarie Street, where he was minister for tourism, roads, environment and transport.

Bruce Baird, a former federal Liberal MP and deputy leader of the party’s New South Wales branch, has died aged 84.
Baird, who also served as the NSW transport minister from 1988 to 1995, is the father of former state premier Mike Baird, the ABC journalist Julia Baird, and the marketing executive Steve Baird.
As a NSW minister, Baird was instrumental in lobbying for the 2000 Olympic Games to be based in Sydney. He then entered federal parliament as the member for Cook.
