South-east faces flooding, storms after second-driest September on record

A major rain and storm event intensifying across south-east Australia could trigger flooding during the next 48 hours.
The sudden soaking follows a severe lack of rain in September — Melbourne only picked up 18mm last month, but was soaked by 20mm in just one hour on Thursday afternoon.
And for many areas, even heavier rain is still to come as a stream of tropical moisture feeds into a low-pressure system over the southern Murray Basin.
The system is notable for its slow movement, which should ensure moderate to heavy falls continue today, with a focus across northern and eastern Victoria, along with the south-east corner of New South Wales.
Campers warned, Turnbull Stakes under a cloud as more rain bears down on Victoria
Campers near rivers and creeks in Victoria’s Otways are being urged to move to higher ground, ahead of a rain event that could rival January’s shocking scenes, when cars were swept out to sea.
Melbourne is also set to get more heavy rainfall, having just recorded its wettest day in two years on Thursday. The dire forecasts have cast doubt over whether one of the Spring Racing Carnival’s most significant events – the Turnbull Stakes – can go ahead on Saturday.
In a statement on Friday afternoon, the State Emergency Service warned parts of the Otways could receive up to 150mm across the next 24 hours, and southwestern Gippsland 110mm, which could lead to flash flooding in both areas.
