"[Hansen] was almost like this architect, this grandmaster shapeshifter of artifice and reality," Oppenheim says of the To Catch A Predator host. (Supplied: A24)
Nothing whips pop-culture media into a reliable frenzy quite like panic over paedophilia, a phenomenon too often fuelled by sensationalism — the inexhaustible pursuit of clicks and ratings — rather than any desire for actual justice.
What: A behind-the-scenes portrait of TV sensation To Catch a Predator and its paedophile-hunting host, Chris Hansen
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers, Alex Winter, Merritt Wever
It's an argument that can certainly be applied to television's mid-aughts smash To Catch a Predator, a fraught but compelling synthesis of reality TV and police sting which lured online offenders into real-world traps, using youthful adult actors to play their underage victims.
Primetime: in this taut morally complex thriller, ambition, entertainment and justice collide
Director Lance Oppenheim creates a grim and grubby world in Primetime, steeped in the sweat and compromised ambitions of its characters. But below the film’s grimy surface is a sharp examination of the personal and professional concessions people make in pursuit of success.
Inspired by real events, Primetime follows American television presenter Chris Hansen (Robert Pattinson), whose NBC reality TV series To Catch a Predator became a ratings sensation between 2004 and 2007.
The film is set in 2006 as Hansen, working with producer Andie Bender (Merritt Wever), oversees sting operations. In the set-up, men are lured into houses believing they are meeting underage children, only to be confronted by Hansen and his cameras.
